Whatever is up with the light switch it must have been bad because it's a stark contrast to him not being willing to go out the emergency exit. When he was flipping it, I thought it was going to be the lights for the conference room next door. I remember him hearing voices when it was off.

He didn't want to go through the emergency exit because the police would be called, and he's assuming a false identity. He doesn't want to draw any attention to himself. He's a wanted fugitive for his involvement with Walter White, the black and white stuff are flash forwards to his life after Breaking Bad don't forget.

This is true but its more than that...as explained by Gould and Gilligan. Gene is a completely different man the Saul...Flipping the switch was just him being slipping jimmy, doing what ever he wants, not pushing the door handle is him being afraid now...he is no longer (or is supressing) his rebellious nature. He is no longer Slipping Jimmy nor Saul Goodman

I don't think he was worried about the cops. There is literally no way the cops could have gotten there before he walked around to his car.

He etched "SG was here" on the wall. That could either mean Saul is coming back, or that Saul died in there.

I'm with Sevens in that it's probably that he realizes the Saul lifestyle is why his life is complete shit now and that's not who he wants to be anymore.

i dont think he really thought the cops would track him down for opening that door, but that it was in the realm of possibility that it could happen so he decided not to take a risk. thats where he is right now. afraid to take any kind of risk.

Yea, even though it was highly unlikely he'd really get in trouble, or that they would recognize him.. he just didn't want to take the chance. He used to take chances like that all the time, playing the odds, but it eventually backfired. There could have been a camera outside the door and he gets tracked down later, a cop could happen to already be in the parking lot of the mall, etc..

I don't know if the creators said something specifically, but it's interesting to think that Saul may have officially 'died' in that room. I got the impression he was just pining for the 'good ol' days, much like when he watched his commercial at home. Any time his current life feels extra shitty, such as being locked in a garbage room, he starts thinking about being Saul.

Not taking the Exit was Gene playing it safe as stated.

"SG was here" was a little bit of classic Slippin' Jimmy coming through, hinting that he's still in there and could show up eventually.

The garbage room = the prison where Gene has locked Saul. "SG was here" is what people write on the walls of the cell where they do time. As others have mentioned, the light switch and the door alarm are parallels. Saul would just open the door, knowing he could talk his way out of any trouble that came from it. Gene can't do that.

Identity is obviously a huge part of the show. Accepting who you are and embracing it, even if society may view the result as repulsive or aberrant, is a requisite key to happiness and fulfillment.

IMO the light switch stuff is an allegory about how Jimmy, as tamed as his new job is, would bend rules, for curiosity sake.

Having actually seen a few switches like that, I'm going to suggest the most likely explanation is that it's connected to an ancient desktop PC running some custom software/spreadsheet that some guy who left a decade ago made. No-one has any idea how it works or how to reproduce it, and they are all terrified if it ever gets switched off, the machine will never boot again 8)

Yea.. we kinda said exactly that. That's the obvious imagery they were going for. We were just discussing what it might actually be connected to, if the creators had written an actual backstory about what it turned off. These are the kinds of guys who would potentially have it be some kind of plot catalyst in an episode later on down the line as well as that initial metaphor.

I was just amazed that the switch didn't turn off the lights right next to it and the reason for it to be running is so you have a unified house front with lights in all windows.

Is that how Americans do electrical layouts? random switch on a wall?

And yeah, leaving the garbage prison through the exit is a risk when you're a wanted fugitive. If I had been in that situation, that door's open after a minute of banging against the inner door, and I'm absolutely no "rebel". No way I would have waited more than two hours for the cleaning guy to dispose his trash.

When an office building is leased it usually gets a facelift. They might add walls to make more offices or knock them down to make bigger rooms. Heck, remodels can happen even when the office is not changing hands. When that happens a lot, eventually a switch can end up on the wrong side of a wall. The company is usually trying to save money during a remodel so it's easy to either miss something like that or decide it's not important.

So no, it wasn't laid out that way but it happens a lot.

Was thinking the same thing. Present it as symbolism only to reveal it's also actually a plot catalyst later. May not be the case, but that's the kind of thing these guys would do- and part of what makes their shows great.
