Just get a pair of the lycra with the chamois and wear board shorts over them. And don't get a cushy seat either. That will definitely kill you on longer rides vs a harder saddle.

Where's the best place to shop around for bibs and jerseys these days? I'm losing weight pretty quickly and need to find some new apparel.
If you aren't super picky, camp out on chainlove whenever you're online. Good deals abound.

Been doing about 20k on my mountainbike (mostly flat area). I know I could do another 20k lap, but my ass is killing me after the first ride. I have purchased a cushy seat, but it's not cutting it. I have never bought into cycling clothes at all but am considering those padded shorts. Any advice?
Chamois definitely makes a positive difference, but to some degree comfort on the bike is a matter of conditioning yourself to being used to it. But as mentioned, more padding is actually less comfortable for serious cycling. I don't recommend going for a super minimalist hard saddle right out of the gate or anything, but something with a firmer profile is better. We call them saddles and not seats for a reason. Cushions are for couches.

I got some of these a couple weeks ago and they've been awesome, especially for the price.Amazon.com: Baleaf Men Outdoors(that picture is what they look like inside out)

I wear them over my underwear and then put on some regular shorts. Hell of a lot cheaper than buying bike shorts, and you can still wear whatever you want on the outside.

I have those too disp, not used to them yet, first time using cycling underwear, I wear normal, these then cargo shorts.

Son wants to do longer rides 2 x or so a week, I said we have to work on stamina first, we get our six mile run done in under 25 minutes, we will move up to the next length which is 8 miles each way. Did 8 miles on a new route today, son hated the beginning bumpy gravel pack and walked the last3/4 mile back to car, we are going to skip the beginning part next time and start by the ice cream stand . His new pedals& cleats come tomorrow.

Appreciate the info. I am genuinely curious as to why a padded seat is any different than padding in the shorts? I've still got the original seat that came with the bike, but it just seems counterintuitive that less padding = more comfort. Especially when most cycling shorts have padding built-in.

Currently have these in cart based on high reviews:

The chamois is generally not that bulky compared to a comfort style saddle with lots of cushion. Plus its flush against your skin so it conforms to your shape and works with your sit bones, not against them like an overly padded saddle does.

PI makes good stuff, you could also go with a set of mountain bike shorts with the separate padded liner if you want to keep a baggy short look on the outside.

I'd just wear gym shorts or whatever over top of the shorts I linked.

and This.

Saddle soreness will eventually be conditioned away. When I start the season I use the lycra-under-shorts trick. Usually after about a month of riding I'm just using gym shorts and it isn't an issue anymore.

For those not having a cycling computer, what program do you use to track your process/rides?

I am using the paid version of mapyourride. I think it works good.

Done about 25 miles in the past two weeks. My12 year old has decided he likes riding a lot and wants to go on longer rides now that he has clipless pedals and has learned to get in and out of them.

MapMyRide is alright, lots of hardcore cyclists use Strava, I have some friends who use Endomondo.

I was using my Polar HRM. Now I am just lazy and fire up my Endomodo app on my phone. I did just order a BT HRM strap to pair with it though.

I use strava. Does clubs, altitude, bike profiles. It's decent. The GPS can be wonky as fuck though.

scurries off to look up strava and endomodo. HRM is heart rate monitor right? i'll be skipping that since i ride with my 3 kids (2 of which are 9) i can't get my heart rate up to maintain a good workout heart rate since i am going about half to 3/4 speed (~8-10 mph average) and spinning just doesn't do it

both programs look decent i'll install em both and see which of the three i like best.

This, I've has a low battery on my phone and it caused some weird shit to happen. I just use it to get a figure of how many miles a ride is, I don't trust the mph all that much.

I use endomondo and really like it. In addition to the normal stat keeping, it allows me to track my friends in real time. For example, my Mom is training for a road bike race right now and I am suppose to meet her for lunch. I can track her ride in real time on my computer so I know when to meet her. Also I know if she stops moving on the map she might have had some sort of problem (hopefully a flat tire and not an encounter with a car).

Oh nice, that's sweet as hell. Is there a monthly cost or anything?

Thinking about that, it's pretty fucking stalkerish as well. Still awesome though.

Not sure if I posted this. But, this happened as I was climbing a hill on the Tiburon Loop, Paradise Drive. Cyclist came speeding down and hit a car. You can see me talking to the driver of the car (the old woman). Took care of the cyclist before the paramedics came. Lots of blood!
