How could you not think that affects the way we think? We have living proof of where these kinds of influencesCOULDlead (see: Elliot Rodger), but still you believe there is no connection betweenwhat we see and hear every day of our livesandhow we think. It's literally the only thing that CAN affect how we think, for fuck's sake. What's the matter with you?
What about the blind and deaf?

2 working senses privilege.

If I clubbed your head in with a baseball bat do you think it might affect how you think? What if I sprayed you with LSD? What if you had a chemical imbalance in your brain? What if you had a psychotic episode brought on by illness or medication? What if you had a genetic defect?

What about the entire goddamn field of neurochemisty?

You. Retard.
THAT was you "bam" moment? Chemicals? Jesus Christ.

For the record, you're absolutely right. Chemicals can affect the way we think. Guess our friend Rodger must have been sprayed with LSD.

I'd love to believe this post is serious.

Either way I love how he qualifies "for pleasure" as if its some dry, dense, impenetrable tome which most people would only lift under duress.
I meant "for pleasure" as in "not for school".

I read Slaughterhouse 5 for pleasure once years ago. Don't remember much about it, though. Maybe I should have read 1-4 first.
lol.

When he scores a zing, he scores a zing.

I also did not care for Slaughterhouse 5. I do think that Vonnegut is overrated. But it may have been an "in the moment" sort of thing, his books. Not all art is eternal, nor should it be.

Well, in this thread the point was for me to take the bait and give Araybro a simple, effective and non-controversial description of privilege, with all the expected results (-18 nets and counting). In social justice groups, I guess one point might be to get people who don't face the same difficulties present in the lives of minorities to stop acting like jackasses who just believe their lives are better because they are better people. If you realize a lot of people had things more difficult than you not because of bad choices or mistakes made, but because of some arbitrary category we put them in based on color or gender, then maybe you won't be so resistant to trying to tear down these barriers.
I dont think anyone here is denying that some minorities have it a bit harder.

What we are asking is what "acknowledging white privilege" accomplish?

It actually all makes sense now. Tanoomba is a retard because he saw and heard too much retarded shit.

I recommend everyone keep their exposure to him at a minimum for fear of it spreading.

Look at this fucking arrogant moron. Guy gets the girl? Girl also gets the guy, you fucking psychopath. You're going to sit here and make up, literally out of thin fucking air, how watching a movie affected each of us. We have "proof of where they COULD" lead? Are you fucking shitting me? Suck my dick you fucking moron. I grew up on Ellen Ripley, Clarice Starling, and Beatrix Kiddow. Who the fuck are you to tell me how the shit I viewed affected my life? Get the fuck off this forum and never post here again.
No, you're right, you're right. We are each beautiful and unique snowflakes. We each live in our own tiny personalized universes, each in their own self-contained vacuum, where factors affect us and only us in ways that no other person is affected by any other factor.

Also, holy shit! That is some genuine jimmy-rustling going on there! Didn't think I had it in me. Am I gonna make your ignore list? Am I?

It accomplishes showing that you understand that some minorities have it a bit harder. That's. Fucking. It.

Then why not just say "some minorities have it harder" instead of calling it "white privilege" and then adding a bunch of exceptions as to why people shouldnt be offended? Why not call it "Minority disadvantage"?

Because you can't be a passive aggressive racist to whites then.

This moron thinks he has the ability to roll up in here and judge the lives of 300+ million people based off of what? His fuckin' BA in English? He didn't even recognize a basic synonym earlier in this thread. I fear for our children if you're the one who's teaching them, Tanoomba. You are the worst kind of liberal. You probably take Colloidal Silver and stay up at night worrying about the "toxins" in your food.

I really didn't expect you to get it either.
If it was as simple as you seem to think it is, it wouldn't be a problem.

1) Be Black
2) Apply for a Mortgage
3) Arrive at an understanding of what institutional racism actually is

1) Submit a resume
2) Be named Shanique
3) Don't get hired

I'm not claiming that this does not happen. I'm claiming the opposite, this does happen. This much we can agree on.

What we disagree on is where it starts to get hard. Where it starts to become work. This has been explained ad-nauseum. Lithose, Cad, and some others have spent a lot of electricity in doing it well, and the rest of us more electricty in doing it poorly. The end result, unfortunately, is not "white people be power-trippin, yo". These posters are not bastions of socially conservative idealism. I have no doubt that if they WERE able to lay it at the feet of vestigal bigotry they would do so.

We all wish it was as easy as you and Tanoomba want it to be. I do understand what you're saying, Mist. Honestly, I do. A child could understand it.

You want homogenization? You want that expression of freedom? Go get a corporate job.

Dat glass ceiling. It is made of irony.

Your argument is basically this:

I understand that institutional racism exists.

I understand that white men have a slightly easier time achieving any given goal (aside from playing in the NBA/NFL) than everyone.

But because I'm a white male, I don't think that society should take any steps to offset this. And anyone else that disagrees with me is just wrong.

You really have a bad habit of hearing what you want to hear.

It is the only reason I believe you are a lesbian.

Edit: We are all guilty of that habit. But females put a special flare on it.

You are constantly underestimating how good it is to be a white woman.
That's the problem. You keep making this personal.

I don't have a dog in this fight. I'm a erudite white woman who's been steeped in academia for the past 14 years, and probably will be for the rest of my life. I totally understand my privilege and the whole coastal, liberal, northeastern academic culture where it comes from.

I just also think that society would progress to a better place faster if other people had less hurdles and biases to overcome just to get to the point where they can start contributing to society. That's the entire point of my argument from the start.
