My guess is the situation isn't that black and white. I'm not convinced the guy did anything wrong (legally speaking), but likely there was a bad interaction between them and she thought she would get back at him by doing a spiteful art project targeting him. And then it blew up in popularity and she felt like it hit the point of no return and she had to run with it. And then she sensationalized it to make a name for herself. I mean, she wants to be an artist and artists need recognition to sell their work. Shitty on her part, but I understand how it could happen and how it then spun out of control.

But Columbia is really the bad guy here. They wronged the shit out of the guy and deserve a fat judgement against them.

They allowed her to harass the shit out of him even after he was cleared of wrongdoing BY THEM. They approved of her mattress project (which targeted him specifically for harassment, unapologetically), they displayed her other art pieces for public viewing which took personal shots at him, they allowed her to drag her mattress across the graduation stage after specifically disallowing it by their own rules. There's probably more I'm missing.

They institutionally failed to protect their own student from a harassment campaign and at least passively approved of it. Pay up, you hypocritical fuckers.

I'm not saying she's a victim. My point is that Columbia should have the hammer dropped on them. They directly signed off on a harassment campaign against a student that they cleared of wrong doing, and kept giving passive approvals to it over time. Also, between a venerated institution run by highly paid adults vs a 20-year old misguided art student, I expect one of these two to be a lot more responsible with their choices & actions. But Columbia failed massively to be responsible. And it led to direct damages for their own student.

So basically I hope Columbia gets fucked too, but with different reasoning. College kids are dumb and do dumb shit. The institution isn't supposed to signal boost bad behavior and the best lesson for them is financial pain.

Haast has it right. In the grand scheme of things it isn't this silly little girl or the others like her that are the true problem. The true problem is educated responsible adults in positions of power who do anything other than scold or at least ignore them. It's like when a 6 year cries and says they want ice cream before bed. You don't engage or bargain with that shit, you shut it down and wait for them to figure out that they don't always get their way. Was it Bisi or Lith or someone else here who said that all of these people's behavior's become perfectly clear as soon as you start looking at them like their eight year olds. That's how they behave and that's how they should be treated. I hope Columbia gets raped over this.
