On the original topic, I don't know if anybody has posted this because the last 35 pages of this thread are a TL'DR blur to me... but did anybody else notice the surge in discussion of "white privilege" just in time to set up for the easy solution? Apparently according to some guy in the Atlantic we just need to pay each black person in the country $35,000 to make up for the "debt".

I assume one we pay that nobody will be able to claim historical prejudice or racism as a cause for butthurt again.. right?

The reason why we are seeing "White Privilege" pushed as an talking point is as more overt racism is marginalized and eradicated from society, the grievance warriors require further justification for their existence. "White Privilege" is perfectly positioned suited in that regard because its just like the Force: You can't see it, you don't even know its happening but it surrounds and permeates everything. You can be a racist via white privilege without taking a single oppressive or overt racist action, and therefore allow for/justify the continued crusade by a faction of the PC thought police.

The idea of Reparations have been around forever on the fringes. The advantage White Privilege provides for Reparations is that it helps to overcome previous objections to them: you don't need to have been a descendant of slaves to get them and don't have to be the descendant of slave-owners to feel the need to fund them. No matter when your ancestors arrived, if it was from Europe, you benefit from White Privilege and as a black person, it didn't matter if your ancestors were slaves; you were still the victim of it.

Pretty spot on. All of a sudden "white privilege" just pops out of nowhere in the past year after existing on the very fringes of academia for 2 decades.

These minorities are running out of justifications for their failures.

I live in a part of town where there are a lot of Latino families in both those categories. What I have noticed is that it seems the first and second generations to immigrate are the most aggressive about achieving success, starting businesses, making a good go of things. Then as the generations proceed they slide more into dependency. Which mimics most of the unenthusiastic white kids I see who want to live with their parents until their 30. So obviously we white folk are rubbing off on them and it's another things we need to check as a privilege. right?

There are lots of blacks who aren't caught in that trap; they don't seem to be able to change the direction of "urban" culture, though. As a sociological group, blacks have been caught for decades by a multivariate set of forces that have lead to those outcomes. They aren't racial or genetic issues, though. I wonder if any group caught in those tidal forces could have escaped, given their circumstances.

The big question is, who/what/where will provide that catalyst that will drive American black culture towards those success markers and makers we see from more prosperous out-groups. Or really even if that can happen, given the continued decline of overall American society to track to those themselves?
