It's hardly screaming. It's the same amount of exasperation as when you say "build something that matters" to someone else on the forums.
Yep. Hopefully more talent gets out of that for other coding jobs, the big companies bottom out and learn their lesson. I really don't blame MJ for Warhammer, I blame EA and the people pushing to release something unfinished. In fact, I would just absolutely love one day for him or someone else to spell the beans on that game/situation.The pay sucks and the hours are too long.
Wait, so do you know Mark Jacobs personally then? Who do you still hang out with in the industry?LOL wait, did you just call me a shill? I haven't worked in the industry for years (late 90's).
And I blame Mark Jacobs for running a shitty development schedule, forecasting over budget, trying to top down design horrible ideas, and not keeping pace from a management perspective. Not to mention, letting everything fall behind 18 months. EA didn't force it to ship. EA let Jacobs fuck around too long with too much blind faith (Which they repeated with Vogel) and had to ship something to mitigate loss. The game was a clusterfuck from the get go because of Jacobs involvement. DAOC almost didn't ship because of Jacobs.I blame EA and the people pushing to release something unfinished. In fact, I would just absolutely love one day for him or someone else to spell the beans on that game/situation.
Ok, now your trolling me. I already said I don't know him. Wish I did though, or any mmo dev. The only friends I have in the industry are the ones I worked with back then and we don't stay in touch much. A couple work for Sony on sports games, or did last time I talked to them. The others moved out of town, haven't talked to them in years.Wait, so do you know Mark Jacobs personally then? Who do you still hang out with in the industry?
cleansed, please don't post people's info even if it's easy to find -tucoThe only one I am willing to cop to publicly on rerolled for now is Vanguard, which was my first industry job (and at the time quite a shock). Since then I've work on 3 other AAA projects and if you include live teams and expansions, and since moving to a small studio about 5 more projects not all of which have released.
It's fine, I've been wondering how long someone would Google that massive amount of information I have dropped. Problem is I have to be more vague about what I am working on now, I was hoping that I could speak in more detail about things if it wasn't well known where and who I worked for.(Disclaimer: I think this is a pretty good resume but I dislike people touting their "expertise" and then not manning up and backing it up. All the info is very public, hope its not an issue to post)
Lol, you're trying to hard bro. And that is why I was laughing at you. If CU doesn't make it, I'll be mildly disappointed, but only for about 10 seconds.Gotchya. So basically it is just blind fandom.
Watch this movie this weekend.

I'm home and have already had 3 beers... I probably should eat dinner.Lol, your trying to hard bro. And that is why I was laughing at you. If CU doesn't make it, I'll be mildly disappointed, but only for about 10 seconds.
Anyways, as I said to Denaut, the back and forth is fun but it will be at least a year before anything tangible like an alpha is available for critiques. Slow friday at work..
Heheh, east coast? Just finished lunch here (don't tell my boss about the pint though).I'm home and have already had 3 beers... I probably should eat dinner.
Oslo, see above ^Heheh, east coast? Just finished lunch here (don't tell my boss about the pint though).
He already has, just not publicly. I am not a giant fan of MJ, I started beta testing WAR over a year before launch and I am still a bit skeptical towards MJ for the fiasco that was WAR. He is not as much to blame at UT and Denaut imply though. Keep in mind that his company was sold out from underneath him by his board and once that happened he had very little actual control over WAR.Yep. Hopefully more talent gets out of that for other coding jobs, the big companies bottom out and learn their lesson. I really don't blame MJ for Warhammer, I blame EA and the people pushing to release something unfinished. In fact, I would just absolutely love one day for him or someone else to spell the beans on that game/situation.
Fortune 500 companies actually pay and have great ROI. Game studios by and large are not that profitable, and most of their money is invested in people to create things, and not in manufacturing, physical products, or resources.Wait, people say the pay sucks but the majority of costs go to salaries. How does that work?
There isn't much to say specifically that we haven't talked about generally to be honest. Both projects suffered from the exact same problems we've talked about only a few posts ago, it is almost sad that the problems were so pedestrian and predictable. As to Brad, there isn't anything for me to add that isn't already public knowledge, I barely ever talked to the guy.Denaut, nice resume. I'd be more curious in your opinion about Vanguard, Brad Mcquaid, and Age of Conan versus Mark Jacobs or CU.
To be fair I have never once mentioned Mark Jacobs and his involvement or performance on WAR for the simple fact that I do not know anything about it and I don't talk about things I have no direct knowledge of. If I am guessing, surmising, forecasting, or speculating about what I THINK went on somewhere then I will explicitly say so.He is not as much to blame at UT and Denaut imply though.
Are you saying they are flawed because they are not following a formal design and tender process ?If anything he has become a representative target for my frustration with the industry's contempt for the design profession, mostly because the contempt heaped upon people like him is deserved but it makes us all look bad. Mark and CU happen to be an excellent target because they currently very public and very flawed.
No, nothing formal. At the heart of it I think CU is flawed because it doesn't know what problem it is trying to solve. Are you saying they are flawed because they are not following a formal design and tender process ?
Wouldn't a more accurate and fair statement here be that "you" don't know what problem CU is trying to solve? Those that have been following most if not all the updates know what City State has sold us on thats it trying to solve. That doesn't mean that all problems have been identified or addressed. I'm genuinely not trying to be ignorant or a dick about the question but I am curious about your statement. No, nothing formal. At the heart of it I think CU is flawed because it doesn't know what problem it is trying to solve.
