Personally, I think any combat engine that allows animation cancelling has poor design
How can you say this without hating literally 99% of any game with a "combat engine".
There is an infinite amount of things that require animation cancelling in gaming or you know.. you can enjoy your games where you have to physically stop your running animation before you can attack a foe. That sure is fun amirite?

I'm saying that animations should be designed so that cancelling isn't necessary to play the game well, and also button mashing deserves to be punished with failure. Souls games have almost no animation cancelling at all, and when they do it's almost always someone abusing a bug, so clearly it can be done.

Mostly it's a pet peeve of mine from MMOs. Having to cancel to do competitive dps is fucking retarded. I certainly don't like to see it in my single player games too.

I'm not following. Do you have an example of what you are talking about?

TERA would be my most recent example. Most of the classes can cancel out of their animations, and people bitch because berserker gets locked into all of theirs. You can cancel to a block while you're charging up the skill, but once you release it you're stuck. My opinion was that berserker is the right way, and all the other ones should work the same.

Prior to that, I played DCUO. The entire [dps] game is based on chaining one cancelled animation into another, and if you don't do it your dps is literally half (often much less) of someone who does.

So.. you think Warriors, in your TERA case would still be viable if everybody was stuck in active animation frames?
No, they would become the most useless class in the game by a large margin. Their ability to tank would disappear and their DPS would become absolute shit.
Every class would become shit if you made them all play like a berserker. Berserkers in that shitty game make up for their inability to cancel most skills by hitting for a shit load more per attack.

I could not disagree with you anymore if i wanted to on games like this.
Look how dumb a game like DMC would be if you couldn't jump/frame cancel any of their moves.

It just sounds like because you can't maximize a mechanic, or execute things as well as somebody else.. it shouldn't exist, which is absurd. Skill ceilings are always required or a game is incredibly dull.

I find this conversation odd because my first post on the subject was agreeing with something that you said.

Basically all I'm saying is that big weapons should have long animations and small weapons should have fast ones. If you let big weapons cancel out because button mashers cry when they commit to an attack that didn't want to and end up dead, or if small weapons have animations that are padded with a bunch of stupid flourishes or whatever that somebody thought looked cool but in practice end up gimping the character if they can't be cancelled, then the combat system is fucked up.

I don't really disagree there, it was more so your generalization of animation cancelling as a whole and TERA example you used.

Either way, they do a great job in dark souls in terms of animations I find. They're obviously not perfect but they match the game style very well.

Dark Souls is like... it's like a, it's a game; and I think games have forgotten to be... games.

I liked how it was done in Dragon's Dogma, where animation cancelling was actually a skill. You had to learn it, only certain classes could use it and you had to slot it(and you had very limited slot options for your skills) so it was a choice. The higher version would also cancel staggers and stuff from getting hit, making it very valuable in some situations, but ultimately being a skill that did nothing if you were playing well enough.

Otherwise yeah don't really like animation cancelling unless it kinda makes sense or is only on specific stuff(and by that I mean specific things being cancellable, not specific things cancelling everything).
On that note, is Dragon's Dogma worth buying/playing?

It's okay... don't expect Dark Souls though. You can probably find it for like $10 so why not

It's really good imo, but it's not dark souls at all. It has some similarities but it's mostly with much more epic fights(can climb on mobs and shit) but at the same time while being much easier(not too easy mind you, but still fairly easy especially in comparison). It has some really fucking cool classes though and it has a lot of content especially if you buy the Dark Arisen version(it's a standalone with an additional dungeon). It plays more like a traditional RPG with quests and shit than Dark Souls with the exploration and find your own way stuff. Should be pretty cheap by now so yeah definitely worth it. Was just mentionning it since it was relevant to the cancelling discussion.

Absolutely.

Just make sure you get Dragons Dogma : Dark Arisen. It is the full original game + an entirely new area.

It is difficult in that you die a lot, but the action is much more action oriented. Has one of the best combat systems in an action game that I can think of. It is heavily focused on day/night. EQ in that regard. It becomes really dark and stronger enemies spawn. Large world, can run wherever you want and it is filled with harder mobs that can easily kill you if you stray from paths. It rewards exploration and has a very good balance between risk/reward similarly to Dark Souls.

It is more Skyrim meets Dark Souls than a pure Dark Souls game with a combat system that puts Skyrim to shame. The dungeon crawling is excellent.

Third Dragon's Dogma. A little rough around the edges in some parts of the game but overall really fucking good.
