Can you actually play online and ruin other people's experiences with that? I'm surprised to see people on gamefaqs forum praising him.
As long as your account is not banned, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. And like I said earlier, with all of the consumable souls you start with, you can push yourself to whatever soul level / memory you want to go out and PVP with whatever flavor of the month build is out there.

If you couldn't play online with it then no one would give a crap. Unfortunately you can.

Hopefully since it's still early in the game's lifecycle From will actually do something this time. I'm surprised the save file isn't locked down. A lot of PS3 save files are locked.

Unfortunately some of the hacks seem to be built straight into the game files. They aren't save games.

PS3 savegame encryption has been cracked since last August, so technically no PS3 savegame is locked anymore. You just need to re-sign the file after you edit it.

And the master race isn't missing out on much by not having the game yet. In addition to the fact that the servers do not actually appear to have even basic sanity checking, the game balance is non-existent (vastly worse than Dark Souls 1.0 even) and there are quite a few annoying bugs that might get fixed in the next month.

Am I the only one who hates this game's magic system? I haven't heard anybody else mention any problems with it, but in playing through the game as a sorcerer, I am just repeatedly thinking to myself how awful the spellcasting system is and how much more effective melee is for almost everything. At the same time, a lot of people seem to enjoy playing mages and I have to assume I just haven't figured out what the deal is.

If I had to describe the spellcasting mechanics in one word, it would be 'absent.' There's just nothing there. You click the button and your character shoots the spell in a straight line, and then you can use the primitive lock-on targeting system to assist with aiming. There isn't even the ability to zoom in and free-aim in first person, although the binoculars sort of let you do this (without crosshairs), but the fact that this is widely considered a requirment for playing a sorcerer is just a sign of how bad the magic mechanics are, considering that it's a hidden item that looks like a useless novelty prop at first glance and is thus in no way something that it's reasonable to expect all players to just find and use as a matter of course.

The cast time and range of the spells is also a huge disadvantage. Even the spell with the longest range has a shorter range than the bow with the shortest range in the game. The fastest spells in the game take upwards of three seconds to cast even when built and geared for 200+ cast speed (the stat hardcaps at 316). It's almost impossible to cast spells if anything is attacking you, and the range of most spells is so short that you're within charging distance of the target. It's a fucking nightmare trying to do anything involving multiple fast mobs, spellcasting is just too slow and sluggish.

The worst thing, however, is the fact that the good spells are so severely limited. Usually they have 2-4 uses or something, which can be raised to five or six with the right stats and gear. You typically only get one copy per playthrough. Flame Swathe does a lot of damage, but with five fucking casts on a 50 ATN caster with Hexer's Hood, it's not exactly a prominent part of the gameplay. 90% of your spellcasting will be Soul Arrow and its derivatives (least interesting spell line in the history of gaming) which is just worse than an upgraded bow in every possible way.

Magic takes a huge stat investment, the selection of spells is tiny, spell availability is purely itemized and gated behind campaign progress, the casting mechanics are awful, and the cool spells are restricted to a ridiculously small number of uses. What the hell is it that makes people like this game's magic system? What am I missing?

I think actual Mages are pretty much in the minority. I plan on playing one though once the PC version releases. I played a melee on my PS3 playthrough.

I have never had an issue with magic. The stat requirements aren't that drastic (certainly easier than the 40/40 str/dex I have), they have decent weapons available (moonlight greatsword / witches staff) and good spells can be attuned in multiple slots if need-be.

All that said, rolling around in the Souls series without at least one weapon/shield, you're gonna have a baaaad time.

All that you said about magic is bad if you try and use it by itself. However, even with all that, magic let you completely trivialize many hard fights in DeS and DS. Not sure if that is the case here, but heavy magic playthroughs tended to be pretty easy in DS.

magic stuff
Can sum all that up with: sorcery sucks ass, hexes are godmode. 30 int/fth/att, 18 str/dex (dark MLGS), first soft cap in everything else. Start as cleric so you have a head start on faith, a mace which is pretty much just as good as the fire longsword, and so that you can leave adaptability at 4 forever. No pure sorcery build is remotely as good.

Did you try the crypt blacksword?

Some of the new reaper weapons are pretty cool too.

I am trying to get the Chaos Blade from Lost Sinner+, heard it's good, but I want to extinct all the mobs leading up to the fight so I don't need to worry about shit on the way.

As far as boss weapons go, the Scythe from Nashandra seems like it's going to scale really well, and I have my Dragonrider Bow / Curved Dragon Greatsword both at +5. The CDG is something like 400 damage before bonus and I hear it scales pretty well with dark so I'll probably do that.

I just used a +10 Long Sword or Mace, depending on what I was up against, armored or flesh.
