Am I the only one who hates this game's magic system? I haven't heard anybody else mention any problems with it, but in playing through the game as a sorcerer, I am just repeatedly thinking to myself how awful the spellcasting system is and how much more effective melee is for almost everything. At the same time, a lot of people seem to enjoy playing mages and I have to assume I just haven't figured out what the deal is.
If I had to describe the spellcasting mechanics in one word, it would be 'absent.' There's just nothing there. You click the button and your character shoots the spell in a straight line, and then you can use the primitive lock-on targeting system to assist with aiming. There isn't even the ability to zoom in and free-aim in first person, although the binoculars sort of let you do this (without crosshairs), but the fact that this is widely considered a requirment for playing a sorcerer is just a sign of how bad the magic mechanics are, considering that it's a hidden item that looks like a useless novelty prop at first glance and is thus in no way something that it's reasonable to expect all players to just find and use as a matter of course.
The cast time and range of the spells is also a huge disadvantage. Even the spell with the longest range has a shorter range than the bow with the shortest range in the game. The fastest spells in the game take upwards of three seconds to cast even when built and geared for 200+ cast speed (the stat hardcaps at 316). It's almost impossible to cast spells if anything is attacking you, and the range of most spells is so short that you're within charging distance of the target. It's a fucking nightmare trying to do anything involving multiple fast mobs, spellcasting is just too slow and sluggish.
The worst thing, however, is the fact that the good spells are so severely limited. Usually they have 2-4 uses or something, which can be raised to five or six with the right stats and gear. You typically only get one copy per playthrough. Flame Swathe does a lot of damage, but with five fucking casts on a 50 ATN caster with Hexer's Hood, it's not exactly a prominent part of the gameplay. 90% of your spellcasting will be Soul Arrow and its derivatives (least interesting spell line in the history of gaming) which is just worse than an upgraded bow in every possible way.
Magic takes a huge stat investment, the selection of spells is tiny, spell availability is purely itemized and gated behind campaign progress, the casting mechanics are awful, and the cool spells are restricted to a ridiculously small number of uses. What the hell is it that makes people like this game's magic system? What am I missing?
