I'm going to do the opposite, more of a dark knight since hexes are stupidly good in pvp. dark fog is OP, dark weapons are OP. Imma wreck some fools with a hex/dark melee build ~

Does anybody know what armor set is kind of a greyish robe/chain mail with a black and white (zebra-esque) mask/hood? I can't find any pictures on it. I thought it might be chaos but i don't think it is?

I think it's the Chaos set. The Dark set is pretty badass for that type of idea too.

It's off my head, I'll get back to you tomorrow once I'm home again, pretty sure it's near a bonfire for easy directions.
Thanks, let me know when you think if it. Wiki lists the Flame Quartz Ring +2 as being from the Guardian Dragon.....is this from the boss, because I don't have it. I found out with better fire resists I can survive a flame breath from the Ancient Dragon, and I'll finally be able to kill him (Had him at 45% tonight, just keep making stupid mistakes, running a second too late, etc)

Yeah the optional fights are murder. Fuck the Dark Covenant, seriously. Fuck it twice for requiring an Effigy for every attempt. Ancient Dragon is pretty much just getting close initially and then executing for 20 minutes straight without fucking up at all. Vendrick I am still hung up on, mosty because he seems to magically move me in front of him at random times and one punch crunch me. And I still have not beat the fucking Rat Authority, but my build makes that fight somewhat impossible. I can AE the adds instantly, but the "I am Sif with shitty telegraphs, constant stunlock, and the tiniest hitbox for a giant monster ever" does not work well with a Black Knight Halberd wielding caster.

On the topic of casters, the game is pretty much easy mode if you do it one of two ways. Start out with Sorcery and then once Hexes start dropping start pumping faith until you can toss the bigger lightning bolt spell. You will do godlike hex damage and that lightning bolt is just stupidly broken against anything not resistant to it. And even then, its still pretty good. For combat stats, you raise Str and Dex to whatever you want to cover your preferred weapon and bow. For me that meant Str 20 and Dex 26 to encompass the bows and lances I like. Pump Vit enough to keep load under 50%, because that little bit extra roll distance and not losing stamina make a huge difference in a lot of situations. Mine ended at 21, which was enough for me to wear the mish mash of caster gear I have and equip all my weapons and catalysts. If you prefer swords, you can probably get away with a lot less in combat stats or wear heavier armor, but then you will need to pump attunement to get more casting speed. The bow pretty much supplements the casting and acts as a pulling tool the entire game. Fog Cloud renders some of the hardest encounters in the game trivial, too. By the time I hit the Dragon Aerie, I was mostly a faith caster with Hexes on the side (pyro stopped being useful after the Rotten) and it was faceroll easy until the end of the game. I pretty much one shotted every boss from the giant spider thing onward til the end. My plans with the character are to keep dumping into sorcery until I can do Soul Geysers, which is apparently even more retardedly broken than the lightning spam.

Casters are just fine in this game, except maybe PVP. But even then, a well timed Dark Vortex can end the fight against a mele specialist. Nine times out of ten, they will see the catalyst in your hand and think "here comes the lightning bolt, time to roll in" and then you drop Vortex and chain cast that shit. They pretty much spend the fight on their back getting chain stunned. Even if they have a descent dark resist, they still get murdered and you get what amounts to a free backstab at the end. I am a shitty PvP player (but love the coop in this game) and I still win way more than I lose with that stupid shit. Casters are just fine in this game, in fact, the hexes (especially Fog) could probably be toned down a bit. My only real issue is that there are huge gaps in progression in the Miracle and Sorcery lines that more or less force you into hybriding if you want to be an active spell caster the entire game. A few more mid tier viable nukes in the Sorcery line and some more buffs in the mid range for Miracles would really make going single stat caster a lot more attractive. And I say this as someone with every spell in the game in my inventory.

Anyhow, the game is easier than its predecessors, option fights aside, but it is a lot more fun (outside of the hamfisted forced pvp) and I look forward to playing it a second time as a dedicated mele guy. The visuals are amazing and the variety of areas to explore is just overwhelming. I am still farming in post game, despite having Second Son still in the wrapper. This game is that fucking good.

I agree that NG in Dark Souls 2 is easier than NG was in the first game. Now that I've started NG+ though, I'm finding the experience to be far closer to what I wanted from difficulty in the sequel. So much harder and more challenging. Bosses that were complete cakewalks like the Flexile Sentry become infinitely more difficult and "Capra Demon-esque" and I'm loving every minute of it. NG+ in Dark souls 2 is shaping up to be way harder than NG+ was in the first game.

Dark souls 1's NG+ wasn't really all that difficult i found until like.. 3 or 4 lol
I do find it funny that people are saying that dark souls 2 is very easy (which it is in comparison) but none of them have actually tried playing NG+ yet

I have yet to try the Ancient Dragon but Vendrick is a pushover and so was the RRA. Bowed down the 4 rats individually at the start and then just sword & boarded the Authority. Would have been easier with a BKH swinging attack, but I had straight stabs with the Heide Lance :[ If you have the weight allowance to equip a 100% physical shield, just do it.

Exactly. I think anyone saying the Dark Souls 2 experience has been overall easier than the previous games need to dive into NG+ as soon as possible. If you're looking for a challenge that surpasses the first two games, NG+ is precisely the experience you're asking for.

I am actually having fun just coop helping people with the end boss fights. Dedicated casters are pretty rare from what I am seeing, so I am getting summoned a lot for the harder end bosses. I get a lot of souls doing it and I can have a sign out while farm clearing the area myself. Plus, if the guy summoning me is a fuckup, no harm done. If they ever made a full on coop version or MMO of a game like this, it would be pure awesome. I like the challenge to a degree, but mainly its the mechanics and setting that have drawn me to these games. I struggle to find a single non-linear action RPG that even comes close to the immersion of this game. It is probably, along with Last of Us, the magnum opus of its genre and the best game of the last decade.

And regarding the RRA, I do have a 100% shield. My swipes just seem to whiff and if I ever fuck up dodging his stupid paw swipes I get one shotted. Seriously, that is the hardest fight in the whole damn game for me for some reason. Although Iron King gets my vote for dumbest fight, because of the random nature of where he pops up and if he pops up on the one middle spot, you are more or less fucked with undodgeable bullshit.

IK: When he goes under the lava, run to where he used to be. When the rumbling starts, run back around the corner. He should never move, only attack to ever worry about should be the laser.

RRA: Stick as close to the side of his neck / by his front legs as you can, he completely whiffed on me a few times. When I did manage to stab him it was on the under side of his mouth.

For the Rat Authority, use one of the weapons that do a 360 swipe on the legs while underneath it. Will usually connect to all legs, or you can use Soul Vortex. That's what I did, took around 4 or 5 casts. Casting that while it is over you will cause it to jump backwards, then lunge forwards right into it again. As you have finished casting it as it jumps back just put up your shield, block, move back, regain stamina, enter leg area again, rinse repeat. With me he did the jump back, jump forwards every single time I cast it, so it became very easy to anticipate its movements. I didn't even have that good of a catalyst when I did it, but if you are late game, 1 cast of Soul Vortex should take around 20+% of his hp.

Playing as a sorcerer too, with 20 str, 26 dex. Been using a blacksteel katana, but found the Washing Pole yesterday and now I want to upgrade that. Certainly not the best weapon, but ... Sepiroth. Been using a dragonrider bow. Is there a greatbow somewhere though? Not found one yet, even though I have arrows for it.

For my catalyst I have a +10 black witch staff that can cast spells, hexes and miracles. I have 3 of them (apparently a rare drop?), and not sure if I need to upgrade another one. I upgraded it to +10 first (+220 on all stats) , then wanted to add dark damage to it, but at +10 it doesn't show up as upgradable with elements. The base black witch staffs can be upgraded. So maybe elements can only be added to +5 for those staffs.

Hardly ever get invaded, but when I do, it seems to be people who camp the elemental blacksmith. So very annoying. With all the PvP areas and such I can't help but think they have to be a total ass in real life to invade in that area. Do not think it would be "lol casual!" to have the bonfire area/zone next to a blacksmith as an area that can't be invaded.

Currently I have done every boss except the Dark Covenant, Ancient Dragon, Undead king guy and the final boss. Love the game, but getting burned out now. Not played anything else since I got this game. Doubt I will double dip for the PC version unless they release a DLC later on. Easily the best game I have played this year though. Considering the amount of content and time this game takes, it makes me wonder what other studios are doing with their time when 85%+ of other console games are usually 10ish hours at best with game areas 1/10th the size. Be easy to say quality over quantity, but when this game has both in spades it makes me wonder.

Really, really looking forwards to Dark Souls 3 on next gen consoles in a few years. Doubt they will have problems getting funding for another one.

That Alonne greatbow is pretty solid for long distance snipes, but the ammo is a bit pricey. I mostly use a Black Bow of Lightning +10, myself. With wooden arrows and S20D26, I can deal enough damage to do the job when I need to drill something from a safe distance. If I need archery to do actual damage (rare for me, because of caster build), I bust out the Alonne but the last zone I actually used it in was the shrine before crypt.

BTW, where does that witch staff drop from? Right now I am using some blue stick thing I found in the Crypt and the chime you get from the final boss soul because it makes the lightning damage retarded.

Really? Nothing until NG+? Why even the arrows as drops/sale on NG then?

I would have suggested the Alonne one but you're obviously capable of killing the IK again. He was the first boss I used an ascetic on, fucking pushover. Especially since you only have to kill one or two mobs before getting to the boss from the final bonfire.

BTW, where does that witch staff drop from?
Crypt witches / black phantom in Amana.

Yay for Amana farming with crappy item farm gear on. I was lucky to clear that shit pit when the servers were down so I did not get chain invaded there. Not the case lately, though. Guy I was escorting got chain invaded five times during our clear to Demon of Song. Wish I had been Blue Guardian at the time.

OMFG, feels so good to have made Ancient Dragon my bitch!!! Tips for any melee stuck on him - I used the Drangelic Greatsword +5 and was doing minimum of 430 a hit....(Way more when using random resins I found in my inventory). Was able to get 4 two handed r1 slashes and have more than enough time to run my naked ass away from the fire when necessary. Its crazy, the attempts that took 8-10 minutes only got him to about 30-35%, but once I tried that sword, the whole fight lasted like 3 minutes.

Also: To anyone wondering about that fountain - It's right before the elevator leading down to the undead crypt, and there's a bonfire right at the bottom of the spiral stairs leading to it. It ended up being more of a flaming altar you pray to, but I had no problems restoring my humanity, and even think I had effigies in my item box. Nice way to conserve for the eventual rapes I'll see tryin to get through the chasm for Darklurker.

I set myself the challenge of not using any ranged items at all on my first play through just wanted to be 100% melee only, I have just got the kings ring and so far the boss fights have all been pretty simple as melee just gotta be patient. The trash in some places have caused me no end of grief, the area just before you get the kings ring with the casters that fire spells off from 10 mile away. the hidden monsters in the water followed by the cave with the giant mushroom who just chain casts the gas that breaks gear. I have not raged so much at any point in this game in the end I got through by slowly causing each one to not spawn again. For NG+ I will try a caster build and see how it goes

Love the game only get to play a few hours every couple of days but when I do I just get drawn into it so much and time just flies by
