I got a Gigabyte X870E AORUS Elite wifi7 mobo as a combo with a 9800x3d. Was the only way to get a 9800 without hitting up scalpers, so it was basically free next to that and I got a 1tb NVME free in the deal too.

Was gonna ask what people think about Gigabyte mobos, as I've been an Asus user for a while (upgrading from X570E rog strix), and I could just resell it and buy something else...

But I sure am seeing a lot of shitting on asus here. Their mobos really gotten that bad? I've never had an issue with them.

Gigabyte has never really been "king of the hill" with their mobos. They never really chased reviews and top speed rankings or anything like Asus and MSI do. Then again, they have never really lacked for features either. Solid, very solid, but nothing flashy. I've built a lot of machines over the years for myself and others with Gigabyte boards, reliable and will live long past you're ready to upgrade. Always always upgrade the BIOS first thing on any new build. They have a habit of shipping with really old BIOS version so it depends how deep you are in a socket's life cycle if it'll identify the CPU out of the box. With that said, I'll always recommend them.

I've also built a few MSI builds over the years to and they are either hit or miss. Really solid performers with lots of overclock, or error prone headaches that make you want to scream. I don't use them anymore unless the board has been out for a few months and can check reviews to see if the kinks are worked out and it's good, or a dud.

I'm honestly considering not going with an Nvidia chip next graphics upgrade because I will not buy another Asus product. Zotac? no.

Let Tech Jesus explain it to you:

Jesus christ that's worse than anything I could have imagined. Been a huge asus fan for many years and haven't had any other mobo for like 15 years, but looks like I'm sticking with gigabyte for now. I water cool and do moderate overclocking, but really I just expect my mobo to have a lot of places to plug things in and to do its job. This one seems to provide a good dose of both.

ASUS boards may also come with extra audio services, if you have one check for the Nahimic service and disable it. Usually causes more trouble than whatever the hell it does.

I'm one of the peeps shitting on Asus. They got a bad reputation the old fashioned way: They EARNED IT !
I've had really good luck with MSI, I have 6 builds that are still running right now including the gaming rig I'm typing on now. For me they have the best bang for the buck.

Almost done setting my new comp up. Getting the mobo drivers to work was the biggest pain in the ass. Prolly about 30 more mins of fiddling yo see how much faster this is. Lot of games I play are cpu intensive, so I’m hoping it’s good even before I slap a new gpu in

I went with and MSI 870 Tomahawk this time. It was a Newegg 9800x3d combo. I watched several reviews, and decided I really didn’t want an E series bad enough to wait, and I like the options/build for the tomahawk.

I’ll post some pictures later once I get them shrunk. No bad parts and no issues with the setup. It booted first try.

The video card is wishful thinking, it has my old 3070 in it now. I’ll get something new in the next few months. The 64 gb of ram is overkill at this point, but I don’t plan on building another pc until 2029/30. I was regularly sitting at 80% memory usage with 32gb of ram.

I have that same case coming tomorrow. Wanted to do my current build in it but the 7900XTX would not fit. I haven't bought any fans until the case gets here and I can figure out what fans I'm going to use/reuse. It will NOT be the current Lain-li ARGB fans. That stupid ass program consistently uses the most CPU cycles.

The case is massive. I just added 3 140mm arctic fans to the 3 fractal fans in the case, and the 3 140 fans that are part of the cpu cooler.

The smaller case is a fractal meshify c for comparison.

Nice ! You like the artic fans? I was contemplating ripping the 3 140's that come with it out and replacing them all with Noctua fans. They are suppose to be the best and the brown would go well with the wood aspect of the case. IMO.

If you’ve got the money to burn, why not. I’ve never owned Noctuas, but I’ve had several systems with Arctics and I’ve never had a problem with them. Same for Fractal fans. I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy them, but they work just fine.

Swapping fans is easy, so if I decide I want a change later, no big deal. I took the same approach last time and left the stock case fans, added some cheaper be quiet fans and a Corsair liquid cooler and never felt the need to change in 5 years of use.

Well I guess I'm NOT getting my case today, UPS lost the damn thing, or it's taking a vacation to Reno NV. I've been there for work but would not go out of my way to see it.
Anyhow I guess I'll figure out fans next week assuming they don't lose it again. Grrr

yea i'm a bequiet fan boy myself, is there a different in temp or whatnot? i had a arctice freezer 360 and replace the 3 120s w/ bequiet fans and the "whine" died down

I think the difference is mostly db, aesthetics and maybe build quality. In my new build I’ve got 9 140mm fans going, so I can hear air moving, but I have to consciously listen for it because otherwise I wouldn’t notice. Maybe that’s just me. The Noctua, arctic and Be quiet all have their fan specs posted, and I think there’s like a 4-5 claimed db difference between them all.

be quiet are not the best fans by a longshot, but they have the best acoustic profile to me (as in, they don't make my brain twitch when they ramp up and down slightly)

I wear headphones 99% of my PC time, so fan DB is at the bottom of any criteria I have.

Nice case, though the wood accent thing is not to my taste. Reminds me too much of the 80s and early 90s furniture.

I love my fractal torrent. Sure its huge, but I love all the room for future upgrades and to get the hands in there if needed.
