280 Is a solid card, it benchmarks right inbetween an Nvidia 760 and 770. Id say jump all over it if you would even remotely want any of those 3 games. it becomes an outstanding deal at that point. I've also heard you can re-sell those game codes for a little cash if you don't want any, and just want to offset some of the cost.

I just finished setting up the new monitor, and after usingthis guideit looks pretty amazing. The old profile was like visual diarrhea compared to the new color profile.

I would go 970 all the way if it was me. That card kicks ass bro and is a lot more quiet and colder than 290.

970 wins almost every benchmark at 1440p and below. 290 wins at 4K resolutions(most of the time, but not always). As long as you're sticking with 1440p for the foreseeable life of this video card, go 970.

I'm willing to bet driver updates will push 4k performance up soon.

And a lone 290(or 970) isn't going to run games very well on high/ultra settings at 4K anyways, so I wouldn't even consider 4K performance at the moment unless I was purchasing 2 cards.

Gtx 970/980's out of stock as far as the internet can see. Is that just Nvidia pushing out enough cards to get hype and reviews everywhere and then we have to wait til Christmas/New Years for Amazon/New Egg etc to have them in stock?

Also, any folks have history with Ibuypower? I and my pc are getting a little long in the tooth and after seeing what amazon would charge ala carte vs Ibuypower similar part but assembled and w/ warenty. Ibuypower is damn close to the amazon price and I do not have to worry about screwing up something in setup.

Thanks

You cannot screw something up in a set up. Its literally plug and play, snap together like legos.

The only thing that could possibly go wrong is you choosing the wrong components which dont go together, but this is why we are here. Another is getting a component which does not work out of the box and that is pretty rare. I have been building comps since 2004 for my family and have not had one component which was bad out of the box. So its pretty rare from my experience. Or im the luckiest mo-fo?

As to the warranty? Well, yeah its nice to have, but most components come with their own warranty/return policy and quite frankly this is pretty rare as well to have something thats already working go bad. Only thing that stopped working for me in my builds over the years is power supplies and video cards. In fact I still have some of my old ass P4 components that if I plugged them into a box today they would still work.

So in my opinion dont be a lazy ass and do it yourself. It takes like 1-2 hours tops to assemble one and like 20 min to load up windows and youre good to go.

If you can't piece together parts for cheaper than buying pre-built, you are buying your parts from the wrong place. I'm not going to tell you it's always a huge savings, but it's usually a slight savings + higher quality parts, so that's a plus.

And I've had the same experience as mkopec above, I've been building PCs for myself and friends since the early 90s, and I've never had a DOA part.

Yep, this. In 20+ years of building PCs, I've had 1 or 2 DOA parts that I can remember, and they were easily replaced. This is more true today than it was years ago, too, because today's RMA processes are very easy with most of the major resellers.

And, hey, let's not forget, you have Rerolled at your disposal should something be confusing, and most of us aren't assholes. Well, not all the time, anyway.

Ok, the plan is a new pc that I will not have to mess with for a few years. When it starts to get long in the tooth, get a 2nd vid card and go sli, actually, no one knows what will happen in the future, so lets not even worry about that. Newegg: $1512/Amazon: $1604, both minus the vid card as they are out of stock. Questions, comments, suggestions appreciated.

Not sure where to start and I don't have enough time to cover everything so I'll let others explain to you all the wrong things in that list.

p.s. I'd keep the cpu cooler

I'd go with this setup. Its about $200 cheaper(also without video card)

In my list, you're getting a better PSU, better Hard Drives(don't pay a premium for a 6TB drive, just get 2 3TB drives if you need that much space, I'd personally just get 1 for now, and add another down the road when they are bound to be cheaper). If you are mostly gaming, that i7 processor is also a waste of money, the one in my build is cheaper and just as good. I left the same case and cooler as I'm honestly just not familiar with them at all, so have at it, sounds like you did your research on those. Also as far as the DDR4 RAM, won't do anything useful for you in gaming, you're just wasting your money.

YEah i7 is waste for gaming. Go i5 also a cooler for $75? No thanks. My evo 212 can do 95% of that cooling for $25 with a good OC too. People are also weary of gigabyte Mo-bos because in the past they did some shady shit with their power distribution. not sure about now, but i still would not risk it. especially since there is so many other trustworthy brands that make killer mo-bos. I like joeboo build. Its pretty damn solid.

Id also think about your video card purchase. Its all about price vs performance. And unless you plan on running some extravagant 3 monitor setup or some shit, or have money to burn on a $600 gtx 980, its way overkill. Think about a 970, for $350 its the best choice. And even if you get 2 970s for multi monitor, im betting it would beat out a 980 single.

If you have a budget whatsoever, then its just all about being smart with price vs performance. A $2000 computer might get you 20% better gaming performance than a $1000 build, but is that 20% performance worth a 100% price increase. Most people would say no. I'd tend to do the $1000 build and then add another ~$300 video card to it in a year or 18 months, and that setup outperforms the $2000 build that you could put together today.

Gigabytes are fine these days, at least the higher end ones, but I still wouldn't buy one.

i7 is useful if you're streaming, or even watching streams on a secondary monitor, or frequently running other shit while gaming.

And if you go I5 you want a 4690k not a 4670k if you're doing any kind of overclocking at all. You won't need an expensive cooler at all to overclock that.
