Holy shit Intel. I haven’t seen or read a single review that hasn’t absolutely trashed this chip.

Guess it’s confirmed I’m going AMD for the next 5-10 years.

Wow.

Thinking of buying a GPU for my GF but I'm totally out of the loop these days.

She basically only plays Counter Strike 2.

Sitting on a 2060 at the moment that seems to be pushing the limit for that game, unless the game is just unoptimized. I will never play that shit game ever so I have no clue.

Whats is a budget option for upgrading that 2060 to something that will run CS2? As cheap as possible while still being enough to have decent frames.

What a mess of a product release. Runs pretty well when loaded, so they've got a lot of work to get it to work under all loads. Large concern is instability and BSOD's on a full release product. They didn't work with MS at all, so people building these are going to be returning them in droves. Not being able to install an OS unless you know the secret handshake is a pretty big show stopper, IMO. Also, who the fuck want to wait 6mo-1y for Intel to iron the bugs out of it. And then the laughable price.

It's pretty clear now that Intel got the wrong guy for CEO job. This shouldn't have been released in this state at all. Motherboard partners aren't ready for it, MS isn't ready for it, and they aren't ready for it.

3rd gen of products that are trash AND they are giving up on fabs = bad news.

2060 is still probably fine for CS2? 114FPS @ 1440p?

I think she runs at 1080p even. But complaints a lot that it lags, maybe its the CPU, not really sure what that is right now.

All I know is they all seem to need 5000fps in that game and I never understand why.

At 1080p its prob her proc more than her video card. My kid just got a new proc, the 57003D from an older 6 core intel, I think the 9600K? And hes getting double his frames now with his 3060ti. And the stuttering all went away. Its like it unlocked the full potential of his video card.

Yea I think the CPU might be the issue. The GPU probably needs a refresh also.

Its a prebuilt shitty computer from a electric store sadly. Told her I could build one for her but she needed it right away a few years ago.

Will check and see what CPU is in there and if theres a chance to upgrade it without changing Motherboard.

If its an intel, prob not. If its an AMD AM4 or AM5, prob yes. Chances are you will need mo-bo, ram, proc, and cooler.

Here is what my kid ended up buying. Were lucky to have one of these stores within a hour. Maybe you are too. Because youre getting a mo-bo for free, essentially. I was wrong in my post and this is the proc he got....

it's probably got adware or shit bogging it down and only 8gb of ram

I check just now and it's a I7-8700 CPU at 3.2ghz.

From what she said right now it's when the frames dip below her monitor (144hz) she gets some lagspike. And lowering the settings more then she has right now makes it look like total shit.

Edit: 16GB ram and Windows is recently re-installed.

8700 is ancient at this point. I think Coffee Lake is the oldest possible officially supported processor generation in W11. Is HVCI disabled on the machine? If not, doing that might help extract a bit of extra juice. It's been a while since I've looked at it in detail, but IIRC HVCI is only tuned for 12th gen Core and beyond, and even then, there's still performance loss with it on.

I dont think its disabled. Ill have her check.

Would there be an upgrade to do on that socket? I dont have much knowledge on Intel as I've been on team AMD for a while.

No, Intel sockets are usually dead as soon as you drop a chip in them. Coffee Lake is LGA 1151 which actually did support a couple generations of CPUs, but Coffee Lake was the last supported gen on that socket. You could potentially see if you could find a used 8700K or 8086K, which are the highest clock speed chips in the same generation, but that would be your only option, and I don't think that will help all that much relative to just getting a newer CPU.

Thanks for the tips!

She tried looking at that HVCI stuff and after a while of troubleshooting it seems to be disabled.

Will probably keep an eye out for something for sale during Black Friday or if something pops up used nearby for a dirty upgrade.

A full upgrade is probably the best bet, the case is okay so mobo/ram/cpu bundle would be nice to find at a decent price. What would you all recommend for a middle of the road system?

Last I was up to date with the market was 2020 when I built my AMD 5900X/RTX 3080 computer.
