Thanks for the tips!

She tried looking at that HVCI stuff and after a while of troubleshooting it seems to be disabled.

Will probably keep an eye out for something for sale during Black Friday or if something pops up used nearby for a dirty upgrade.

A full upgrade is probably the best bet, the case is okay so mobo/ram/cpu bundle would be nice to find at a decent price. What would you all recommend for a middle of the road system?

Last I was up to date with the market was 2020 when I built my AMD 5900X/RTX 3080 computer.
i mean if you really had to eek out performance w/ an upgrade, then yea a new am5 7800

you can still buy am4, admittedly the 5800x3d king of am4 is now more rare than 5090s, but this is a ballpark $400

Whats the 3D thing after the CPU name? I think those versions came out after I got mine after the initial release.

But yea that seems like a good upgrade for the price. Will keep an eye out during Black Friday for something similar.

The X3Ds have what is called "3D VCache", which is basically an extra helping of L3 cache that is stacked on top of itself. In applications that are cache hungry, it can generate some pretty generous uplift (20%) over a non-X3D CPU. Many (but not all) games are cache hungry - some examples of ones that are are Final Fantasy XIV and Microsoft Flight Sim.

If there's a game that she/you play a lot, it's worthwhile to look and see if the game benefits from an X3D-type processor.

Thanks for the explanation!

Jesus, what happened to RAM prices? Feels like it's basically free to get DDR4 at least.

ddr4 is cheapist, ddr5 is the new kid in town, but now it's still reasonable, thats why am4 is really cheap (but still good)

yea basically if you think you plan on doing any gaming a amd x3d, but if you are gonna use it 80% game 10% chrome 10% taxes, then yea x3d (even tho it won't do shit for 25year old game liks csgo, lulz)

i tell friends, if youre gonna game get a 5800x3d, if you know youre not gonna game then save a few bucks get a 5800x

One thing to keep in mind is that AM4 is EOL and you won't have any CPU upgrade path without getting a new mobo again. Granted, if you're both on AMD platforms she can inherit your old parts.

am5 would be almost double as much b/c of the new socket/ new ram premium

which really shows the trade off, the reason why the am4 is a good value is b/c it is eol, while the current am5... is not so compelling but there is at least a path to future upgrading

but let's be real, most ppl do not upgrade/future proof, and judging by how Aazrael Aazrael is talking about this whole gaming situation, upgrading down the line in 5 years or even 8 is not even gonna be an option for am5 to be viable.

Any news about Intel Arrow Lake thats supposed to release this month? Is it still looking promising or is everyone still afraid to try Intel after the 13th/14th gen clusterfuck?

My i7-4790K after 10 years has finally lost the will to live. RIP loyal warrior.

Hows DDR5 these days, too?
And its awful.

Yea if I upgrade hers it will probably be am4. She basically plays CS2 and sometimes we play Fortnite together with friends. That platform feels like the right price for Whats needed.

I upgraded from a 3570k/gtx 680 to my current one (5900x/3080), so this one will have to do for a few more years. I mainly run at 1440p and ARPGs and the occasional MMO.

I might check into a GPU next release but knowing the last gens prices I doubt Ill upgrade. The 3080 at $800 was my GPU limit price.

Just as an FYI, both CS2 and Fortnite are cache hungry games, so for your use case, an X3D will likely be a better choice.

I wouldn't build anything now if you are looking at the 7800X3D. It pushed back up in price because of (we assume) low supply and the fact that Ryzen 9000 and Intel Arrow Lake offer nothing better for gaming. I'd suggest waiting until the 9800X3D is released instead of paying $450+ for the 7800X3D. On the other hand, the 5700X3D supply will run out eventually since AMD is no longer making 5800X3Ds (to down bin poor yields as 5700X3Ds), so if you plan on staying on AM4 I'd get one relatively quickly rather than try to save $20-$30 waiting for a sale.
