Everything I've seen about the 480 puts it squarely between Nvidia 970 and 980(non-Ti) performance. Not bad for a $200 card, but not really overwhelmingly exciting either.

I'm still gonna roll with the 1070 but I can see the 480 appealing to some. I don't even know how AMD stays in business.

If you have a 1440p monitor, the 1070 is the one to buy. I am not sure I will ever chance buying an AMD product again.

I'll definitely be snagging a 1070 this summer, my 970 still struggles a bit at 1440p on high/ultra settings in some games.

The 480X is going to sell like hot cakes, it's just that we're not the target demographic to buy it. Anyone willing to plop down 500$+ on a graphics card has little interest in a budget performance card but the vast majority of graphics card sold are exactly in that segment and NVIDIA has nothing that can touch the 480X. AMD is going to make a killing off that card, and it'll go a long way to making VR quasi affordable for the masses.

Uh, until they release the 1060 and it will probably be the same price and better.

I'm putting together a new gaming PC, my old system was never really a gaming system and is 5-6 years old and due for a refresh.

The new system will have a GeForce 1080x and I understand it should be able to run ultra settings at 1080p, 1440p and high-ultra for 4K.

My question is: will I notice a significant difference between 1080p, 1440p and 4K? Is it worth the money or should I consider a 1070x and a cheaper (but nice) 1440p monitor? Where's the sweet spot for monitors?

For gaming 1440p 144hz gsync monitor is the sweet spot. 4k is not quite there yet.

Yea definitely go for 1440p/144hz if it's within your budget. Honestly I'd say take 144hz over anything, even if it's only at 1080p. The res different from 1080 to 1440 is far less noticeable than going from 60hz to 144hz, at least for me (specifically for gaming, productivity/work is another matter).

Thanks! Any thoughts on IPS vs TN panels? I've been looking at the ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q/PG279Q, identical except for TN/IPS. The TN is less expensive by $100+ and I'm concerned about light bleeding on the IPS.

I've also looked at the Acer Predator which is comparable to the ASUS but I hate the styling/aesthetic.

I think I'm just trying to find the nicest 1440p/144hz 27" at this point and those two seem to be the most favorably reviewed that I have found.

If you can get an ips panel they're basically mind blowing compared to TN. If you've always used TN then it doesn't really matter if it's a money issue.

I'll take backlight bleeding on a IPS over a shitty TN every fucking day. If you're looking at it like this, you really should go see both and check out the difference (preferably side by side).

Yea, I had a quick 2ms TN gaming monitor then later added a nice IPS 2nd monitor for my Photoshop needs. I had never had an issue with my TN panel until they were side by side. My OCD got the better of me and I couldn't stand looking at the TN's whitewashed p.o.s. look afterwards. Now I have two 1440p IPS monitors.

Yea IPS is a night and day difference over TN. Any light bleed issues that exist on my panels I don't even notice, and having the viewing angle not whitewash everything when I slouch in my chair is truly living the high life.

Or you could lower the brightness to a reasonable level, calibrate for a decent black level and contrast, and then not slouch.
