I have two optical drives. A Blu-ray player for the movie collection, and a good old LightScribe CD/DVD Player/Burner. Yep, still have a CD player in the car.

I still have a DVD burner, but it's left over from when I still burned Xbox 360 games.

I have blu-ray burners in my boxes for watching the odd movie and rattling off backups on M Discs.

Anyone that has moved from a basic SSD to an NVMe drive for OS/Gaming care to comment on whether it provided any noticeable real-world difference?

Was playing Overwatch awhile back and a guy on my team asked me what was in my PC since I loaded into the game before him. Told him nothing special, Samsung 2.5” Evo, 1060, older i7. He said that was surprising as he had just built a new box with nvme. We were talking and figured out it was me running lower resolution than him with lower detail settings. Less data to load into vram.

Nvme is not a game changer compared to a regular SSD. Maybe an Intel Optane 3D Xpoint or whatever they are calling them today, you may notice an improvement, but that would probably be more for writing data.

Not worth the $$ extra to have nvme for gaming in my experience. Unless youre a min maxer. In personal experience , outside of dev stuff and heavy multitasking IO load situations, NVMe is overkill for very little practical return for $.

ver_21 ver_21 @Intrinsic thanks, worked fine after windows install.
Lanx Lanx Was to install windows, since removed.
All is well, messing with how far I can overclock now.

Have fun!

I dicked around with DRAM Calculator and manual timings for a few weeks before I tried the non-XMP presets on my MSI Ace--turns out I get the best no-error performance from those presets.

I have read that Asus has very good RAM presets (special made by TheStilt at overclock.net), if you've got one of their boards.

Also the 1.0.0.4 BIOS full releases are starting to come out today.

FF14 loading occurs slightly faster on zone changes. Not anywhere near as large a difference as going from traditional -> SSD in the first place but still small improvements.

How much time would you say you're shaving off the load times?
Code:
Shadowbringers benchmark scores:

Load by Scene Win8.1 SSD Win7 SSD Win10 NVMe
  Scene #1 2.762 sec 2.398 sec 1.979 sec
  Scene #2 5.015 sec 5.175 sec 3.079 sec
  Scene #3 5.999 sec 6.163 sec 4.008 sec
  Scene #4 4.010 sec 3.685 sec 2.697 sec
  Scene #5 2.289 sec 2.035 sec 1.514 sec
Total Time 20.075 sec 19.456 sec 13.277 sec

Win8.1 is 5 years old, Win7 is 2 years old, Win10 is this year.

Going from 40 sec down to 20 sec is a big deal, but going from 20 sec to 17 does not seem that much IMO. Probably depends if that 3 sec give or take is worth the extra cash.

Yeah, I doubt I'll get one, but I do need some more storage and was considering splurging for a 2TB nvme if I could get some better speeds for gaming/os. Not worth the extra $150 or so just to knock off a tiny bit of load times, though.

I feel like nvme for OS is good, like 256-512gn depending on cost/sales you find. Then a 1 or 2tb SSD for games.

Right nowI have a 256 SSD for OS and a 512 SSD for games, and then a couple of platter drives for mass storage and its perfect. Games can be easily moved between drives and I only really play 1-2 one at a time anyway. I dont even think you need 1-2 TB unless you play a fuck ton of games. But at the same time, 1 tb SSD is now what 256 GB cost when I got mine sooo...

Its funny too because right now im playing a ton of Destiny 2 and Im 99% the first to load into any matchmade activity. Sometimes I have to wait in upwards of a min to see others zone in. So while yes you will load fast, im still reliant on others slow asses to load in anyway.

Are they even planning on making 256gb going forward? Even on old SSD it's under $100 for 512gb and only $100-$150 for NVMe

Shit I used to have a 120 for the OS before the 256 and even that was fine for OS if you moved some of the folders to your platters. (It used to hover around 70 gigs)
