The most telling comment in that Kotaku article is the undoubtable truth that Activision is struggling on how to monetize Diablo IV. For all the monies, not some of the monies.
This whole fucking games as a service has ruined gaming as we old farts know it. I hate the financial arguments because I always have this kernel of thought that the companies have to make money after all.
HOWEVER. when a company STARTS with the question "how do I monetize this beyond box sales, over the maximum amount of time" instead of "how can we make a game that people want to buy and play", we all lose.
Fuck you Activision/Blizzard. All you had to do was remaster D2 and add expandable inventory and your fans would have been mollified for years. YEARS. Instead you catered to the East and made a fucking phone app.
Brilliant.
Edit - Also the whole part about "many of our designers play mobile games": Well, fuck me running, then don't they understand how shit these games are compared to PC games (or console games)? So this is the future of gaming as millennials take over the design and programming? Stop retiring, my gen x compatriots!
A pokemon go gym at the orc statue. Get the fuck out of here with that.
