I'm hoping what you said is entirely where that rumour comes from and has no actual facts behind it.

Last one for the day but it could be a doozy...

Don't click this unless you are sure you want to, it's not confirmed (it ties in a little with that Trouble link) but if it's right it's a major Christmas story spoiler...
It sounds like there's about a 95% chance Matt Smith is actually done and is leaving at the end of the Christmas special.

Start the campaign for Idris Elba or Ruth Wilson for the next Doctor NAO, preferably one of them as the Doctor and the other as the assistant

Im at a "wait and see" point.

It's ironic that the best episodes of the RTD era were almost always Moffat's. But since he's taken over the show it's been really hit or miss, and mostly the latter. I still have faith he's going to wrap this all up in a way I'll enjoy.

I can't remember where I read it, might have been on FoH or even on here but someone once said Moffat is the kind of chap who just needs someone to reign in the crazy. When he is showrunner he doesn't have that someone.

Like you said he has had hits, Van Gogh and Doctors Wife spring to mind, he also had top notch writing talent for both those episodes but still resisted the temptation to go completely balls to the wall.

Then you have Lets Kill Hitler.

I actually like Matt Smith, as he reminds me of the best aspects of Baker and Troughton, who did much of the defining work on the character. His supporting cast, on the other hand, has been very hit or miss. River in small doses is excellent, but in large doses the show veers too far off course. Amy Pond went from interesting but brash to annoying bitch I hope dies in a fire, really fast. If it were not for Rory being so likeable after he grew some balls, she would have had zero positive impact on the show after the Good Man Goes to War point in that season. What a cunt. Rose was pretty unlikeable for me, too, but apparently she is popular (probably from playing a hooker in another show) with a lot of the fans. Honestly, Jack Harkness and Donna Noble have been the only solid companions in the modern era, as far as I am concerned.

I guess I could like Clara more, if it were not for the fact that they have more or less done this story line twice already in the classic serious (Ace and Turlough) with the mysterious/plant background thing. She kind of sucks as an actress, but at least she actually seems to enjoy traveling through time, unlike a lot of the modern era companions. I reserve judgement until they resolve her story, because things that have seemed lame have yielded gold in this show down the road in the past. Given Moffat's obsession with digging up really old story lines, I could see her being a number of things, from Susan Foreman, to the Rani, to Romana, or maybe even one of the Time Guardians mentally fucked up from the Last Time War. If she is some kind of River projection from the library computer, that would be kind of lame, but not any more lame than the "human hand doctor who shags Rose in a parallel universe" which was super saiyan 5 levels of fan knob slobbering.

I hope Smith stays with the role and I think people who feel the show has gone down hill in the last couple years are forgetting how truly abysmal the Chris Eccleson stint was. Tenant's era had some real stinkers in it, too, but he was a much better Doctor (if a little too serious) than Eccleson. The only really unwatchable episodes since Smith took over have been largely the ones where Amy was a raging cunt the entire episode. And when the dust from this Clara plotline settles, I really hope that they get back to companions who are there to marvel at the wonders of time travel and not tell the Doctor what a douche he is all the time, while providing him a normal mortal perspective rather than just being a pair of tits to stare at in between special effects shots. More Sara Jane Smith and Nyssa; Less Peri and Amy Pond please.

Eccelston doctor with exception of the fart monster episodes is still my favorite of the new docs. His episode were good drama and typical campy dr who effects. Ill take him over the stringbean and frankenstein jr

Reading this post, I was like "what the fuck?", but then I noticed it was from Astrocreep.

Production values under Moffat have gone up but count me among those that felt they stuck with Amy and Rory for too long. Still not sure what to make of Clara but I think the thing that speaks the most about her is that she has no ties to bind her back to the world. Even Amy and Rory reached a point where they figured it was best to leave the adventuring life behind before they got roped back into it. I actually did feel as if how they got written out was something of a copout even though I also felt as if they had overstayed their welcome. At any rate, Rose, Martha, and Donna all had their families keeping them grounded, Rory and Amy had each other, but Clara has nothing. It's a bit different than the other "new" companions, for what it's worth.

What was the deal with Ace? I've been listening to the Big Finish Doctor Who audio plays for a while now, and Ace is there with the 7th Doctor, but I haven't heard anything interesting about her history or backstory. She's a pretty good companion there, so it has my interest piqued.

I've never seen any of the classic Whos, so I only know what's been covered from the audio plays.

I actually enjoyed Ace as a companion in the 7th Doctor Serials. Same with Zoe in the 2nd Doctor Serials.

Im trying to think as well what her deal was, i know Turlough had the whole Black Guardian/Valeyard/Evil Timelord/Et Al talking in his ear, but i must have missed the Ace background that is being discussed

I don't even care anymore, you know it's going to be total nonsense from beginning to end with time reversed at the end.

I was skeptical at first but Terry Pratchett called it a year or so ago, that it's a roller coaster of dues ex machina rather than a story. When a guy with Alzheimer's who has written the same book 10 times in a row points that out... oh dear...

Personally, my favorite Doctor is the 7th, mostly because of Ace. She was a punk kid (like, that's her whole backstory, just an anarchist in the UK, lulz), wore a badass leather jacket, and ALWAYS had fucking pipe-bombs. Sometimes, a whole shitload of them, but always at least one, whenever the Doctor asked for one. She was a total metal counterpoint to the 7th's dark whimsey. In one episode, she basically caused a rebellion by introducing the concept of Anarchy to the oppressed and by teaching them how to make pipe-bombs. Metal!

Edit: Also, she was the 7th's only companion for his whole run.

That sounds pretty straight forward then. I'm confused, why does Phazael group her in with Turlough?

Didn't the 7th have Mel who he inherited from 6th? I understand she was quite hated, though she's not too bad in the audio plays.

As for Clara, she better fucking not have any connection to River Song. River started off as a nice minor character with an interesting twist to basically the most important central character in Doctor Who. Thanks a fucking lot Mr. Moffat. I'm starting to think that they need a show runner who doesn't write at all, but instead wrangles the various writers into producing something that maintains coherence while also having less of these "I'm going to introduce a character who is super important" like you got with Mr. Davis (Rose) and Mr. Moffat (River Song). Companions should provide a moral and ethical grounding to the Doctor, each providing an interesting journey, but shouldn't become the focus to the grand adventures.

Isn't it more or less confirmed that the season finale will basically be the final episode /w River Song?

I'm still thinking Clara is related to Bad Wolf, the only question is what is the relation/creation/causation between the two.
