Ya, they aren't going to drop a huge spoiler like that in a casting bit. Despite all the Rani theories over the years, this honestly has the best chance of actually being the Rani.

I can understand the cons though. Moffat LOVES to troll. And the wonderful actress who originally played her just passed away recently. It all fits together too well though. She's a time traveller. She called the Doctor her boyfriend. The T Rex angle. And she's barking mad. Were going too see her a lot this year so we'll see... I wouldn't be surprised if she's something new altogether but were supposed to see a big Gallifrey arc with this new Doctor and there's no better way to start it off then with a renegade Time Lady who's barking mad from the War.

I will agree with you there though, although we have called out "hey this might be the return of the Rani" many times in this new run of the show, this DOES seem like the best time we could have guessed that. Maybe i'm just a judgemental ass, but just looking at that new woman in her face, I feel the same "Rani" vibes as the rest of you.

I didn't know they did the whole "He's not the Master he is Harold Saxon" thing with John Simm when he first signed onto the show. That does lend credence to this possibly being a Moffat troll.

They went above and beyond for that. There were several adverts some of them they showed on the episode. An entire fictional campaign as well as the giant X with Vote Saxon people were printing out and putting around. During Davies run he did a lot of that stuff. There was a Torchwood site that appeared to be top secret and inaccessible a few months before it was even mentioned on the show.

edit: The site doesn't exist anymore. But it's the same site Captain Jack visits during the Sound of Drums. I think they put it up just after the XMas episode when Harold Saxon was the Minister for Defense and blew up the Racnoss ship. This is one of the sites that still exists. Davies really went above and beyond with Viral Marketing.

Welcome to Torchwood House

This is the quickest I have ever accepted a new Doctor.

My first thought on that woman at the end was another incarnation of River, but then she would have said husband, not boyfriend. It's not his tardis again is it? Doesn't she consider herself a girlfriend?

the way they set up for saxon/the master was friggin brilliant. they did that shit over the course of a season(s?). and if that wasnt enough they linked it up with the face of bo which was an even longer character tie-in of itself.

EDIT: Nevermind, looks like a good version may already be up, downloading now.

What time does Dr. Who air in England relative to America? I watched the first episode early last week, just wondering if there's a stream available or what time it might be up on torrents. One perk of working at a game store, I get requests to play it on the big screen TV for people in the store while on the clock, heh.

Well.. slow start imo. Not having a real connection with any characters so far. Maybe it's just how flirty and goofy Clara acts all the time, but I've never been able to take her seriously, so there's not much emotional connection with the character. Capadli has great delivery of some of his lines (attack eyebrows and that whole scene, for example), but overall it seems the writing is just weak so far. I realize we are still figuring out who this new doctor is, along with him, but there wasn't a great payoff moment like with Smith's or Tennant's first episodes.

It airs at 7:30 GMT+1 at the moment.

Lots of good moments, lots of parts were it dragged or was just bad. Dalek staring at the doctor after he called him a good dalek was very creepy, but then having the dalek just walk away was an anticlimax to the episode - no payoff is right. They need some kind of editor to oversee the episodes and do rewrites to make them more consistently good, like Russel T Davis used to do.

Don't most seasons start off with a storyline introducing a new arc or a new companion? So far we've had two stand-alones with only the barest hint at a "heaven" arc so far.

Hard to say, we only have 3 examples of what 'most' new doctors first few episodes are like since the reboot, so hard to say what they should or shouldn't be doing. But, Eccleston aside since it was re-starting the entire show, Tenannt and Smith had much more epic introductions. More was at stake, and the doctor had a bigger payoff moment.

The only thing I like about Capadli's run so far is Capadli himself. His demeanor and how detached he is in conversation and introductions is great. When he introduces people in a way that is rude but cuts right to the heart of the matter. 'Clara is my carer, she cares so I don't have to.' It really shows how old the character is now, he's done all this a million times and he's tired of the run around.

This episode felt really awkward. Even some of the special effects looked sort of phoned in.

The cold open felt wrong, even the breaks for commercials just didn't flow right. Idk, something was just... off.

I'm going to guess that they don't always take commercial breaks into account since the BBC in the UK does not run commercials as it is government/tax funded.

It felt rushed and incomplete. Might have been fine as ep5-7 or something. I think they ran out of money too since...

In the leaked script for this episode...
The Dalek returns to his ship, has a short conversation with the dalek controller before self-destructing, destroying the mothership.

I really don't like Clara anymore, she's fine to look at, but they use her way too much in all the wrong ways. I thought the whole line "She cares, so I don't have to." and the Doctor giving the guy who was dying the pill, etc... reminded me a lot of the old series. I didn't hate the episode by a long shot, but it wasn't interesting, been there done that. We get it, Daleks are bad, Doctor is a good Dalek. Been through all this shit before. The appearance of Missy was about the only interesting thing. Danny Pink already annoys me, but having read the next 3 scripts, he does get pretty interesting.

I think even though it wasn't as exciting the way they left it is more open ended so they can do something bigger with it. If he blew himself up that is it. Good Dalek blows up one ship. Whoopie. I was thinking more like something they did on star trek where borg hugh ended up splitting off and you have a kind of civil war within the daleks. Like he converts that ship etc. In a future episode when it all looks over fighting daleks and then another ship comes in and it looks even worse then blam that ship fires on the other saving them and the episode is less of a one off waste.

Feels like the writing is still be aimed at Tennent Smith. A few times the Doctor had lines that I could easy imagine them saying having them work but felt off key with this guy.

just caught up. yeah, im not feeling it, clara doesnt really convey emotions very well. it feels like she is having a laugh no matter what the situation. the budget for this episode looked about on par with the first season of the reboot. i do like capaldi, despite everything i am interested in where things are going with him.

on a side note, is it an inside joke or something for all the companions (with exception of Amy Pond) being into black dudes?

Clara had a good dynamic with Smith, she was the school teacher to his ADHD schoolboy....
Here it's the schoolteacher dealing with a crotchety old parent, which is far less entertaining.

I was making fun of my wife for not liking Capaldi because he wasn't as young and cute as Tennant and Smith. I was looking forward to giving her some serious "I told you so" looks once Capaldi hit the scene and workd out swimmingly... I am disappoint.

Yea, you guys are putting into words some of the feelings I've had but couldn't explain. The chemistry between the two is sometimes great, but often times falls flat. Regarding Tennant, indeed, I actually had a few moments where my mind flashed to him being in the role instead. It was odd, because I liked Smith alot, but my brain fell back to Tennant to compare Capaldi to. But, he had an ability to be stoic one moment, but get you emotionally vested the next. Capaldi is so far just pulling off the stoic and crotchety parts, very well I may add, but the writing isn't giving him the other side to play off I think.

Seriously, we were already seeing issues with the show in the last season of Smith's. I wonder how bad it has to get before Moffat is taken off as the showrunner. It's a shame, because the guy has written some of the best episodes ever and he seems like a true fan in interviews, he's just not quite as good at the big picture lately. I'd rather he stay on and just get his shit together. Possibly Mr. Pink will bring another dynamic to the show that will improve it.
