Dota doesn't have the sort of immediate feedback that makes you have an incredible amount of fun from the first game. Winning a game of Dota is usually about stacking up small advantages until you are able to overpower the opposition and kill their base. Until you understand the game well enough to identify these advantages, it will be 30 minutes of "grinding" before a lackluster conclusion.
Once you understand the game better, every little advantage you gain will feel like a small victory. Last hit that creep before your opponent? Victory! Landed 200 damage of harass without taking damage or wasting mana? Victory! Counterwarded the opposition and lived to tell the story? Victory! Got a kill, didn't die. Victory!
That's when Dota becomes the most satisfying casual competitive multiplayer game in the world.

Yeah just not for me. I tried DOTA original when it first hit the scene, tried LOL, now DOTA2. Just isn't for me.

I'm a big fan of "If the game isn't fun for you, just don't play it." No point to force yourself in to enjoying something when it clearly doesn't appeal to you. After all, video games are meant for enjoyment.

This, i feel like unless you have played a moba before, just jumping into dota head first is going to be frustrating there is a semi big learning curve, skill builds early on, item builds early on etc.
Choosing certain skills really effects the usefulness of alot of heroes during early/mid and if you have a bad early mid game it changes your choice on what item route you should go, im not awesome by any means but once you pickup the basics its about individual play and that becomes more rewarding than just a win or loss imo, like someone else said its a alot of small battles that surmount to the overall victory.
I dont wanna say keep raging your head against the dota wall, but i think if you read some tutorials and beginner guides give it a little time and i think it will eventually grow on you, if i had never played wc3 dota, or even an rts just jumping into dota for the first time i would be pretty confused as to where the fuck do i start.

I read a lot of guides. Watches a bunch of videos. Looked at builds. When I played I just had trouble getting into it, if there's no immediate hook then that's really it.
there is definitely no immediate hook, unless you tag along with a somewhat experienced friend and you just follow them around and support and get the hang of things, this is how i re-learned HoN after not playing dota for years, buddy dragged me through a shitload of matches till i just got back the map awareness and all that kinda shit.
I think for learning dota its not so much about the hero and role you're playing its about learning map awareness, learning to creep stack, pull creeps into the lane, ward/counter ward etc, and most of all last hit, moving around the map as a support/ganker is also key but i feel like that comes with map awareness. So i think i would stick with 1 hero, and try to get the hang of that hero and the game.

Who here started playing dota by reading extensive guides, watching videos, and enjoyed it? Serious question. I started way back and just played. You learned, enjoyed the game, and kept getting better. I think all the emphesis on guides and more advanced play for someone who has probably played less than 10 games pushes away more people than it helps.
When someone is ready (and physically capable) of picking up more advanced tactics they should pursue them. Trying to tell a total noob to stack, pull, ward, counter ward, deny, and know every ability and always build their hero like an experienced player just discourages them. If you're new, play how you want and you'll progress and enjoy it. Play against and with other new players or MM will make your life hell.

I dont think anyone started playing dota reading guides, because when dota was on wc3 there was no guides unless you were a hardcore dota player and you knew of maybe 1 or two sites that laid out a guide, clan TDA was the spot for dota if you didnt play there you didnt matter.
but if you have never played a MOBA like he has stated then yes you need to read up so you have the slightest clue as what the fuck to do theres no space for you to take up in a public match if you have no idea what to do, you will get flamed and you wont have fun.

I started with HoN by just kind of falling into it, although I had been watching competitive DotA 1 for years (Tobiwan's old stuff in Australia) without ever playing DotA 1. Also read on hero abilities when I wasn't sure wtf was going on. So, count me into that category.
