The periodic cycle. Crpgs get popular. they hit just enough popularity to touch the mainstream. Crpgs die as they all convert to consoles, and action rpgs lite. see, fallout, mass effect dragonage, Elder scrolls, fable, diablo, etc, versus ultima, might and magic, etc..
seeing it again with Avowed, outer worlds, BG3 and others.
hard crpgs like pathfinder, wasteland, etc barely break 1m. BG3 isn't going to transition console and lite rpg players to turn based crunchy rpgs, its going to cause studios like Obsidian, owlcat, and indies to go towards lighter rpgs.
