If you're new to dark souls or just bad at it then samurai is far and away the easiest/smoothest start.
Re: Flask of Physick, there's a vendor-bought note very early on that points to it.
Overall, I think they've done a VERY good job at pointing you toward things of interest. Statues that point to catacombs, ghostly dudes that walk you to caves, vendor-bought notes that tell you where to find this amazing Flask, or give you other useful information. I'm constantly impressed when I find a new source of info that's been around the entire time that I just hadn't quite realized fully.
Unrelated, regarding Edgelordy McSkellyFace in Roundtable Hold:
I teleported to RTH from the Village of Albinaurics after clearing it out, summoning Nephali to help me with Omenkiller. It did the NPC invader thing that they did in DS1 and DS3, where it mimics a multiplayer invasion. Does anyone know the actual trigger for this happening? The main RTH guy (Nephali's father) then proceeded to apologize for the guy (Ensha maybe?) attacking me, so perhaps it had something to do with my interaction with Nephali? Dunno, curious what it is.
I know I will probably never use them, im the person that saves all of the good potions in RPGs in case I need them later and then end up with a full stack in my bag. It's permanent until you die. So it's like a version of Hollowing/Humanity from the other games.
Use Rune Arc and git gud!

I'm guessing the true speedrunners would never waste the time to activate it unless it’s required. But imagine the speedruns. Souls pro rushes to Godrick gets the Great Rune and triggers it, never dying and propelling him through the game until the next part of the speedrun.
Clearly you are having a different experience with coop pool signs... I dropped mine a few times (while on a work call for example) and get maybe one invite every 20 mins.
The 'notes' would be a lot more helpful had the UX been slightly less awful. The default view for the middle pane in the inventory doesn't actually show the contents of the note or cookbook. Only by shifting the mid-display do you actually see the contents of the note itself. Given that there is no information at all in the 'default' version of the mid pane for paper-type key items this could have been avoided with better design.
So I finally learned (thanks to this thread) that I needed to 'activate' Godrick's Rune and that was possibly the most underwhelming thing I've seen in a game ever. It adds zero stats when equipped, despite the in-game text suggesting otherwise, and only does something if you use a Ring Arc which are rare as fuck unless you manage to farm via helping people with bosses.
As a pure mage I'm currently running around with the Meteorite Staff, the two-faced statue head, and otherwise still wearing my Astrologer kit. I have 60 Int, 25 Mind but otherwise crap stats. Thoughts? The Raya Lucaria gear, other than the statue heads, seemed not as nice as the Astrologer Kit and that was kind of a bummer to be certain.
(I also had to look up the whole Flask of Physick business since I kept acquiring Tears and had no idea what the fuck they were for)
So when you get one of the runes, you can turn it in for one of 2 items, or consume it for a bunch of runes, just like in past Dark Souls games. For a mage, the Godrick Rune is useless because the rewards are an axe and fist item. Later on there are ones that will be more suitable for casters.
If you don't care about achievements, then use it for runes.
If you do care about achievements, then you want to use it for an item, even if you will never use it, because there is an achievement for getting all the "legendary" weapons.
I use rune arcs constantly. +5 to all stats is nutty, and if you ever get low on them just dump your coop pool sign and you can spam through like 5-10 boss encounters in no time at all.
How much weed do you smoke in a typical day?
KRA BITCH!!!!Pretty sure homeboy is permanently addled at this point.
