In Dark souls II you can basically kill one or two boss and buy 99 lifegems. Basically giving you an infinite stack of healing DOT items + your flask.
Also don't forget that in Demon Souls you also can do that in some way. So i'm not too worried about this refill flask situation.

Yeah in Demon Souls you could just farm various amounts of grass and stock up - it didn't affect the game or the difficulty when you fuck up without knowing the mechanics and get two shot back to hell on most any boss/mini boss in the game. And farming was simple - all you had to do was hit certain spawn points, kill, loot, rinse and repeat the cycle. After clearing 1-2 (Tower knight boss) all you had to do was respawn there, run back to the entrance of the boss area, kill the two knights, and get 4 half moon grass. Cycle took about 1 minute - in an hour you could have 240 half moon grass just there.

If you watched (or played) the network test, you'll understand why you need it. Basically right at the start you encounter groups of enemies, as in groups similar to the town area in Bloodborne with the dozen or so enemies in front of the pyre of burning bodies. And then picking up an item and right over the hill, there is another similar group, then another one... then one more, then another in front of ruins that go right down to a boss with no save point.

Having to do one of those groups, perhaps go rest, respawn everything, then run to avoid that group but try the next one, it'd just be a hassle. With the system they made, you can keep exploring far longer. I've watched both Oroboro and Peeve play the 72 hour preview (network test with a 72 hour timer before the public network test), and not one of them complained about it, but rather sought out mobs at times hoping to get flask refills instead of resetting at a bonfire/shrine.

Looks to be a very good QOL addition. When facing bosses and the likes, it had no impact at all. Unlike the lifegems and flowers you could farm in DS 2 or Demons Souls to get way more healing even on bosses. It only has an impact on exploration which is a much bigger aspect in Elden Ring than in any souls game before it.

Where it possibly could be "exploited" in a way is if you can run from open world bosses without them having a regen of health. Then I guess you could fight until flasks were out, run away to a group encounter you know you can clear easily, refill a flask or two, then go back to boss. Never saw anyone ever do that, with the dragon for instance, but it might be a thing you can do? Not sure if bosses reset if you run from them. Or if they even have tethering? Be kind of amazing if they never lost aggro like EQ. Train to bonfire!

I also love the fact that there are possible loop holes one can take advantage of. I did that from time to time saying, "Game... you killed me so many times some of which I thought were cheap as shit - (It was my fault) so payback bitch!"

Agreed, pretty much sums up the scenario I saw as a possible exploit, if you have a wider range to "kite" the boss around and at the same time can one shot trash mobs, especially with ranged combat, would trivialize it. Right now it's a 100% Estus drop rate and you don't even need to pick it up at the corpse as it's auto-refilled into your inventory. Anyways, it was a network test so a lot can happen before launch. I don't think FromSoftware will disappoint as they've had an excellent track record so far!

I just can't wait to jump in and blindly explore, doing my best to avoid anymore gameplay vids, though I'm super tempted to peek!

Mother of God

"Bloodborne is the best game of all time" - GI guy (I AGREE)

"If what I've played is an indication of the quality throughout, this is better than Bloodborne in every single way, handily" - GI guy

WTF am I supposed to do for the next 3 weeks, can only whack off so much.

I noticed the part Springbok said too.... Opening the video like that. My hype. It hurts.

- Unlike souls games where they often feel very "level"ish. Elden Ring manages to make all places feel natural in the world. You're exploring a castle, or a jail, or whatever.
- Confirms that you can indeed just go in a direction and travel to much more dangerous areas. Where previous souls games might have had some places (like Dark souls 1) with a xyz directions to go, this game throws the whole entire alphabet at you.
- There is "questing" in a sense. Where you can go on adventures to figure out npc and their missions. Breadcrumbs you can follow.
- Says there are differences in the network test compared to build he was playing. Items were different, starting builds were different, summons were more powerful in the network test. He says spirit summons can be upgraded but he never unlocked it. To him they were very weak and got oneshot by bosses.
- It will be a good game for newcomers to the genre, as the Souls series often have major bosses that stand in the way of progression. You've done everything, and the path forward is locked by a boss encounter. In this game, he says he feels it is intentional to hit roadblocks only to be pushed out to exploring. If you hit a wall, turn around and go somewhere else. But he doesn't expect it to make it much easier. It's hard everywhere and the feeling of accomplishment will still be there.

Then closes off with more hype. Semi quote "I am usually more conservative about the hype train for games. But this. If you don't know after 10 hours, then what do you know. It could get worse, things could capitulate in the mid to late game, but I have no expectations of that happening. I think it will go the other way. They are going to be screaming about this game. This. This. This is the one. I think this is it. This is the one" "for you?" "for everybody. This is the one."

...

Who will nominate Elden Ring for GOTY?

I can't get enough of this shit, having more fun watching Elden Ring previews than playing MH Rise or anything else. Lost Ark should keep my hands occupied a few weeks, but then it's non stop Elden Ring - hope my kids and wife are capable of surviving without a father.

Just explain to your wife and kids that the fate of the Lands Between rests on your shoulders, I'm sure they will understand

Bleh why would you watch something that spoilery

Spoiler is that it's just a chest that isn't itemized, nor is the quest probably fully implemented/active :)

Cool part of it though is that in the attempts he actually can sneak into a boss room, use bushes for stealth, throw items to turn enemies around and take out enemies and go back to the bushes.

Wouldn't really call anything in the network test a spoiler at this point unless you avidly avoid everything. Game Informer stuff is much more spoilery in terms of content.
