Eh? Wasn't there info that SWOTR made over 100m in just one year from F2P. So, not sure how they haven't gotten the cost back.
Got me couldn't find that article in one minute of searching did find an old article that actual cost was $200 million.

Star Wars made 139 million in just microtransactions in 2013. That doesn't include any subs. It sold over 3 million boxes at full price. It has made a profit and then some. I look forward to the discussion being shifted to profitable doesn't mean succesful now.

It can be argued that if it wasn't for the ip it would have lost money. Game had some really good ideas in it that should be copied by other games. Oh yah, and Huttball!

People need to get past the "I didn't like it or play it, so it must have done badly" idea.

this has gotten a bit off topic for me. My point was they were 2 years into EQ3...would have rather them finish it. The EQN idea is a good one, I just think there were room for 2 games since this dev cycle has just taken so long. EQ3 would be out by now.

Again, I don't know the cost of scraping a 2 year project. Maybe it was minimal, but it doesn't seem like it since there was a total change in art direction and assets were already created.

Wish a Dev in the know would fill me in :)

Does anyone actually know what the hell EQ3 was? I dunno why they shoud finish something if we don't even know what the hell it was, or did we?

Well that explains Draegen's support of FTP.

As for shifting the discussion, I'm still stuck on the 'its a WoW clone' claims by Itzena and Draegen. For example, Rift is a WoW Clone that did okay for a while but last time I checked seems to be dying a long slow death. SWTOR, not so much a WoW clone: unique IP with some IIRC odd combat mechanics and a focus (in the original version) on the whole follow the class storyline thing.

Itzena by all accounts seems to think that if you just copy WoW you'll have a hit - that hasn't worked out well for anyone.

I think if someone were to make an MMO like that again, they'd have to advertise it like Dark Souls was advertised. You have to make it a point to tell people, "you're going to die, its what happens in this game, it's made to be hard as fuck to the point of being unfair."

These days, kids that just do normal raids in WoW 3 nights of the week consider themselves hardcore. The definition of it has changed. When we played EQ, the hardcore were the raiders that raided a dungeon for 10 hours, wiping 30 times and having no social life what so ever. Now adays, being a hard core raider is just logging in at the right time and raiding.

If someone made a game like this, they'd have to advertise it as the Dark Souls of MMOs.
I don't think that would work well with this crowd. Dark Souls is very action oriented much like Tera. That is the direction the genre is moving which is very good. WoW has very difficult endgame content, the trinity, etc. I can see the conversations now. "Well I wanted a tough game but only in certain places so I could poopsock all night a lot. Community and all that. Can you just have static spawns sitting around please?"

just like people need to get away from telling other people what type of game they want to play... It cuts both ways
I agree with the first sentence. Not sure what the latter has anything to do with what I said, given what it implies.

Does anyone actually know what the hell EQ3 was? I dunno why they shoud finish something if we don't even know what the hell it was, or did we?
Would be interesting to read what the first interations were about and why they were scrapped. Since if you go by the info, seems its been scrapped a couple of times and 2 "prototypes" declined.

Almost sounds like they have no idea what they want and just trying to make what is "currently" hot but can't keep up with shifts.

Butler has stated - and got me if you can find the source as this was back in 2013 when he was talking up EQN - that the last before EQNext iteration of EQ3 was basically a reskinned EQ1 (paraphrasing here) but that everyone (presumably SOE internal staff only) who played it got bored as too much of the same-old, same-old (again paraphrasing here).

Convo,
I agree that scrapping EQ3 cost them too much time and money. They just tried too much all the time. EQN, EQL, H1Z1, etc all at the same time. Keeping support for so many games to push that station pass. Just some unfocused decisions over the years.

Yea, we knew. I posted some of the leaked info a few pages back. Smed also dropped some hints in articles back in the day that supports the info

It just seemed like an easy way to reward your base and also make a little money. They actually rather take a loss than reward their EQ loyalist. I would have been fine if they reduced the scope and kept the project at a reasonable size to see how it went, I could understand that.. but they just took the loss.

I wish someone would have leaked some screens of the original look. We have two screenshots, that original animation reel and Butler referenced Kaladim looking amazing.

In some dark corner of the net, some former dev has to have let some stuff slip. There are tons of Copernicus assets out in the wild.
