That was always the best part of running into another EQ player in real life. Hearing how fucked up everyone pronounced everything as you tried to talk about the game to each other.
I've heard people call Ogres "Orejez" and Iksars "Eicksirs"

My wife's best friend's husband played pretty hardcore back in the day apparently, I found out during one of those occasions came up where our wives wanted to get together and we both knew it'd be boring as we historically had nothing in common to talk about. The wives are chatting back and forth leaving me to stare at this guy and have to entertain him, neither of us wanting to be there. So this one time when they came over, mid way through dinner he asked if I knew what MMORPGs were, etc, so I was relieved that this time we had at leastsomethingto talk about during this awkward gathering. So he starts telling me about this game "Everquest" he played, getting visibly excited to talk about this to another humanand not letting me get a word in edge-wise. I'm just trying to say "Yeah bro, I played on Rallos/Sullon Zek", nope, getting a full game synopsis. Telling meallabout it. He called Ogres "Orejez", Gnolls "G'knowells", and Iksars "Eicksirs". Now, fucking up Iksar or Qeynos or whatever, I get that, because its a made up word, but Ogres is an actual fucking word. Orejez?

They called ogres orgies? The Iksar one I've only heard one way which I thought was pretty obvious. Ick-sar! There are a bunch that people pronounce weirdly though. Expansion names are top offenders. I had a friend call Velious Veal-E-O's... Luclin Loose-Lin. I always cringe when I heard certain ones on voice chat. My personal favorite is Spirit of the wolf. The first time I ever used voice chat for EQ the dudes kept saying SAL can I get some SAL? I said wtf are you talking about? The next guy goes, oh he means SEW... I thought they were fucking with me... I've always since day 1, and still do, call Spirit of the wolf S.O.W as in I say out the letters.

Big derail, my apologies

Spirit of the wolf = SOW = \'sau?\ = female pig. I imagine he was saying that, not SAL. How could anyone take spirit of the wolf, acronymed to SOW and then say "SAL"?

I always said Looselin myself, but I've heard the official pronunciation is Lucklin. I don't see where you get the hard C in the middle of a word without a k. I've adapted to Lucklin since being informed. /shrug

Eiksir or Eiksar reminds me of eyetalian. Never heard anything but icksaur myself but I am sicilian/toscano american, and it's not eyetalian.

Not like we have anything better to discuss right now.

What's a scrying orb? Is that a GW2 reference?
That's an allusion to the demo Neriak video for EQN in which some DE move around, apparently at random, and perform some magical linkage whenever they got near one of the floating orbs described as "scrying orbs".

Decline, incline, recluse, incapacitate, incompetent all have hard 'c' sounds without a k. It would be more odd to have CL without a hard c in English.

At the peak my RL crew was about 10-14 players- everyone said crap different and was for good time lulz at the lan parties.

"Someone toss me a 'sss-ow' please"

"WTF is a sss-ow? do you want a 'ss oh w'?"

I always said "Too nah ray". I guess it just comes from all those years conjugating verbs in Latin so I pronounced Tunare as if it was the present infinitive of a fake verb 'Tuno'.

You know a game is dead when people are talking about grammar and pronunciation of another game instead...
