Off-topic, but how did you hear about EQ?

A high school classmate who was also a member of my UO guild somehow found out about it before it hit beta and we ended up "signing up" on our guild web site for certain race/class combos, some of which weren't even available. I remember being really excited because I couldn't visualize a 3d MMO.
While playing UO, I PKed and stole a keep deed from someone I later found out to be my high school humanities teacher, she later told me about it around January of 99. My birthday fell on launch day, so I got the cd as a gift.

Ogre History. Bugging me that I read it in game somewhere about their curse but wasnt sure where or when. Here ya go:
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/q...tml?quest=3608
EQ history is a bit of a clusterfuck, the history of the Ogres from Crescent Reach just reflects the understanding that the Drakkin had of the event. Compound that with varying timelines and the whole Seeds of Destruction time loop thing or whatever the hell that was and there's no single "right answer."

This site has some pretty interesting ancient stories (archive from 2004):http://web.archive.org/web/200402041...ex/default.htm

On the topic of ogres:
And Rallos Zek returned to the surface, pleased with his sanction to create even more peoples for his army. He made then the Ogres, massive, unmovable beings of questionable intelligence, and the Orcs, bred for battle and singled-minded in their desire for conquest.

I think the Codex of War was eventually dismissed as "non-canon", but that Tome of Ages section looks pretty familiar from... maybe the boxed instruction manual?

Was in Best Buy with my Mother, and knew I was walking out with some game. In a rush I picked EQ not knowing shit about online gaming or even the format. I remade my same character like 4x times before I realized what servers were. Before I knew it I was a lvl 19 Warrior in Crushbone with 0 taunt skill.

The lore in this game is fucking stupid if what Dr Neir posted is true at all.
It's pretty bad. They screwed with gods in various fucked up and stupid ways. Star Trek screwed with the lore but made a lot of call outs to bring in fans of TOS/TNG (Red shirt gets fried, all the same characters, yadda yadda yadda). SOE has done its best to give lore fans the finger.

This kid that I absolutely hated, that was a friend of a friend introduced my buddy to it. My buddy told me how amazing it was, and convinced me to go halfsies with him to buy the game and pay for the subscription. We were stupid though, and bought the Kunark expansion not realizing that we needed the base game until we're on the other side of town trying to install it at his house. Expansions were a completely new concept to us. So we go back, completely annoyed and begrudgingly by the original game.

We were completely enthralled. It was summer break from school, and we basically took turns of 8-12 hours shifts playing nonstop for a few weeks. He ended up kind of fizzling out on it, and I eventually got to max level, started raiding, and met lifelong friends.

The lore in this game is fucking stupid if what Dr Neir posted is true at all.
It's not bad, in fact I think it's an improvement in some ways. It's just notEverQuest, though.

Speaking of PoH. I remember being one of the first people to map the remodel of the zone.

I'm sorry, I have to do this. For any dev reading this forum, look at that map, look at the one below, then go fuck yourself and your shitty industry.

*shrugs*I've always been a big lore guy, and I'm more intrigued with the reimagining of the lore than I am anything else. So far, it looks like it's going to have many of the story elements that make the game "Everquest" to me, just rearranged in a new way that'll bring a sense of exploration back to learning the lore.

see, that's what i'm talking about right there, WOW is a walk in the park, go straight, turn right, go straight, line up against wall and attack. wtf kinda lame crap.
So many times in PoH you hear guildmates going... "uhhh where the f*ck you guys go! wtf... i'm lost! send a monk... send someone, i'm scared"
Never once had a "Scared" feeling in WoW, you die so what. +Dumar Internets!

To be fair at least you actually get toseeall of that dungeon, sad as it is, as opposed to just sitting with your ass against the same wall for 8 hours.

I vote DDO for best dungeons in any MMO.

Can you imagine the ongoing abortion of patch cycles that would occur if MMO devs actually tried to do this, though?

It would require a working detailed knowledge of the entirety of the game rather than modular development to be able to do it at all. You don't get someone to be "the rog dev" in a system like that. Either everyone is or no one is. Devs love to talk about how stupid players are when they think no one is listening, and they're not entirely wrong -- but they're not that far ahead of the curve themselves either.

It's kinda fucked up when pokemon is actually too complex a system for your engineers to successfully emulate.

He tried for a week to get his corpse back. Tried paying guilds, getting friends, petitioning ect. Nobody was willing to break fear just to get his corpse. The GMs wouldnt help him. He canceled his account after his corpse rotted.
He should have called the support line and threatened to quit. We had one of our guys do it once because we were too lazy to get his corpse back for him. GM told him no it's part of the game/risks/etc...but customer support over the phone had his corpse back within about 20 minutes.

Being able to see everything kills the mystery. Being stuck in one corner for eight hours is a bit much, but that doesn't mean that every player should beentitledto see and do everything in a game. And especially not on cruise control.

That 1st Fist of Light shit is fan fic. The author pulled as much stuff as he could find from EQ, then filled in the blanks. The author used to push folks on the official forums wanting to learn more about EQ lore to his website. That's a big part of why EQ lore is all fucked up. I still remember people parroting his lore on the forums.

While it's "fan fiction" They got a lot of shit right LONG before it happened. The Edril stuff was released in BETA. They obviously had a lot of inside information.

How did I hear about EQ?

It was the summer of 98 I believe and my latest episode of PC Gamer arrived with EQ on the cover. I really didn't pay attention but my cousin was working in a office not far from where I lived. He asked it I had anything to read while he sat and answered phones. I was entering my senior year of high school by the way. A few hours later he called me to stop by later. He asked if I had read the article about a game called Everquest. I still have the magazine some where and some of the thing Brad spoke about are things that came to be much later in MMO history. Anyway, we bought the game and actually about 10 of my family members ended up playing and many of use play EQ in some form to this day.

Hmmm. Graphics blinding but interesting.

Edit: Put it here because SB has reviewed it and only comment was a timing issue. And it doesn't contradict anything I've heard either.
