It's a PR stunt. They want to make their fans feel involved, and they want them to stay interested.
Who are these "fans" though?

Old EQ players? They do not seem to cater too much to them.

To me, it seems more like a fishing contest for new people where they open up a massive net and drag the sea to catch as much shit as possible. People who have followed them long enough are nowhere near the net. They are in forums like this one going /facepalm at every other statement issued by the various devs.

The only people who can be even remotely impressed at the round tables or feel that they have any sort of creative involvement in the game must be very new to mmos, hence nobody who would be considered a "fan". By fan, I then define that as a person who is knowledgeable and liked their previous product(s), as I do not see how you can be a fan of something that does not exist yet.

Soe's entire stable of games can be described as barely successful or worse. This announcement is weird to me not that it happened at all but that were hearing about it now and not a while ago when they didn't have ps2 in their stables.

Soe isn't close to any of the other big devs in success.

almost 20% of us literally want to play a game which does not ask of you to or require you to actually play the game

It was just a general statement really. By fan I merely meant anyone who is interested in the game enough to follow it this early and post about it on their forums or partake in their polls.

There are definitely fans of games that aren't released yet, but they might not meet your definition of the word. I believe they are called pre-release fanboys, or simply redditors.

NCSoft and Blizzard employees trolling the questionnaire maybe?

While its tempting to read into the timing of a company downsizing, there's just as many boring but more likely scenarios that could be playing out.

Also the question about competitive content is lame because morons that can just think of an example or 2 like J Boota or fbss may click on the always available button without knowing the extent of their sin

I'm trying to figure out what's going on here..has SoE been running games in the red? They get thier budget slashed? Or both?
They need to do something to their PR department. I was watching all kinds of News from Gamescon and will guess PAX will be the same.... NOTHING on EQN/EQN-L, not even a blip on the radar of any sort on my news feeder apps about it. When I have to look up info from the shitty browser app on the phone to find anything, this is a problem!

I know there is limited info allowed but they need to do something to get a spin on things, if Project Jabberwocky can tell sooo much without showing nothing. They should be able to do the same!

Not getting out to the Non-EQ crowd is going to kill them. Small startup companies can get away with niche word of mouth crowd, they arent caring multiple dead games on their back to support. Bred outside the gene-pool once in awhile!

There are many people who should be fired at SOE. Starting with Smed. But yes the entire Marketing department should go. Omeed is an idiot and the chick who runs Sales & Marketing is a an empty suit.

I'd love to know the numbers for Dragon's Prophet, Wizardry Online, MTG Tactics and all the other shitty games they're spending money marketing. Blizzard sucks in many ways but at least they've done one thing right: focus on a few games, and try and make them great (though yes they've fucked up with WoW).

I like to sum up the problems with SOE with the thought that Vanguard, as buggy as it was, was a far, far better game at release than now 6 years after SOE's care.

Landmark, if it is successful, will be a fluke (as the game wasn't planned) and EQ Next, if it is successful, will be because of the SB AI and Voxel tech, both of which are from Indies.

You did a complete 360 from around the time of SOE Live. What changed your mind so much? Was it the posters here, or a certain bit of info that you learned and didn't know before? Just curious.

I've never liked the executive team at SOE and I've always stated my preference for old-school classes not the MOBA classes. The only thing I've changed was I've gone from not knowing who Omeed was to disliking him now that I've seen him in action.

Edit: The only new info is from gamescom that Landmark was not planned, just happened.

I'm getting a little tired of the smugness of the SoE team. They're struttin' their shit like they can do no wrong and they don't have the credentials to be acting that way.

Tad nailed it. They're relying heavily on two things (voxels and SB) that they didn't even create to make this game successful. Everything else they're touting as the best thing since sliced bread (RC and Multiclassing) is nothing more than theorycrafting at this point.

My expectations have hit rock bottom. I'm not going to incessantly bash everything they say or do from here on out, but things have gotten markedly worse every single day since the reveal. First step, as mentioned above...shitcan whomever is running their marketing/PR.

I'm a big fan of Dave's previous work. It's Butler I'm worried about... He has said some straight up looney shit lately.

I'm a little late to the party but this quote from the SB interview on EQHammer was pretty hilarious:

What else would you would want gamers to know about Storybricks?

We just want to keep expectations at a reasonable level and drive down the hype. We have seen some posts suggesting things that would be impossible in 10 years time and others that are possible but it would be very disruptive to have in a multiplayer game with a persistent world.
/facepalm

It's always a good idea to drive down the hype of your unreleased products. Right?
