So why are you guys so excited about this? Enough to pay to alpha. From what I gather its nothing more than stripped down minecraft. EQN I could see getting excited for but this?

The tools are ridiculously more powerful, from an aesthetic standpoint, than anything minecraft could ever hope to offer.

You say stripped down minecraft, I say a current Alpha "stripped down minecraft" with upcoming features and polish that I have always wanted while I was playing minecraft.

Not only that but the tools for creation are much more powerful. SOE wants people to design their own games off this. We can affect EQN possibly. No other game is really offering these perks or even trying to.

Ok so you build a house, maybe a mansion, then what? I really dont see the point. honestly, clue me in here. I guess im just not a fan of this type of gameplay, if you can even cal it a game.

By stripped down minecraft I meant , at least on the multiplayer servers you could have PvP and mobs that would kill you, Im not seeing this here other than the venus fly trap thingie.

Guessing open beta probably starts mid to late summer.
Why would they even have an open beta?

Alpha is now a paid closed beta. Beta is now a paid stress test. A free Open Beta would at best be a hype-building, client-distributing release with a built-in do-over for the "official" release. It wouldn't need to last more than a week.

Meanwhile, they have significant financial incentive to compress the beta schedule as much as possible. The game should be out by summer.

Mkopec,

The game will have combat at some point. At that point it will offer everything minecraft does and more. The designers are giving you the tools they will use to make EQN. They will possibly use your creative assets in their game. You can build your own game eventually is one of their ideas. This isn't a game for people that just want to play the typical MMO. This is for builders, designers, explorers primarily. You will have MMO lite that may expand as time moves forward but this game is for creative types mainly. Maybe this just isn't your kind of game and that's ok. Maybe EQN will be.

Honestly man... SOE has sent such convoluted messages out about Landmark, you are gonna have to do some research. It's too much to explain, but I'll try to summarize:

-Landmark alpha is launching with the building tools, and the resource collection game. That's it.
-some crafting will be in (tool upgrades) but not the bulk of it (gear, housing decor)
-as systems for EQN are developed, they will be made accessible in Landmark (scripting, AI, etc)
-combat will be introduced eventually, both PVE and PVP. To what end is unclear.
-it has been stated (poorly) that the ultimate goal for landmark is a 'build your own MMO' situation. (Private servers?)

Yeah I honestly get the impression of the opposite , that by summer or so it will dwarf what you can do in Minecraft. They've said multiple times it will contain , and they will be releasing ,the full tools they are using to make EQN. That means AI , mob design , rules and so on in addition to the building and gathering. That makes Minecraft look like a stepping stone to what EQL will be if true. Caveat if true.

And your earlier remark Quaid , yes , they are idiots for waiting to launch this during/after the live event.

The big hurdle for them is gonna be making sure that they have the accessibility of minecraft with the funcationality of a real world builder like tesv or whatever. Minecraft is popular partially because its easy to get into, it doesnt overwhelm you with options, they will have to be really careful with that in EQNL.

Meh, whatever, I guess im not the builder type. I didnt like minecraft either.

@Dahk -thats great but they only give you a little slice of the world to build upon. What would be great is if they would flip the PvP switch. Or even if they gave us a few servers of PvP enabled. Then you have yourself a game.

The reason I'm in is the exploring. I found exploring Cubeworld fun even with skipping most combat. This looks TONS better, adds gathering and building, and will add more features as they advance towards EQN. Maybe I'll even enjoy the building, but I'm afraid my mix of impatience and perfectionist and lacking skill in architecture will sour that.

Great post and my 7 yr old nephew is a huge minecraft addict. If they can make the tools easy enough for kids(or older people lol), then it will go a long way towards success.

Mkopec, I'm hoping some people build their own PvP worlds. Then we just have to choose which one we like the most.

Creed, one mile of underground exploration! Plus all of the world and seeing what people are building or have created. The world will constantly be changing at different levels. I can't wait to explore it myself.

Yeah, I loved Minecraft and am really looking forward into how they handle digging deep and exploration.

Got to hand it to them...low estimates are 6000 trailblazers at the moment. That's $594,000 for a game they are going to release for free anyway. Looks like it was a smart move.

My fianc? is not a gamer. She is fucking pumped for Landmark.

If EQN:L turns her into a gamer.... I'm sending Ponytail a case of beer. The least I can do for helping to create the perfect woman

But I'm fairly sure they've alluded to doing just that , they have put it out in convoluted terms , but whether it's actual private servers or you have to "rent" a continent or server for them to host , I think their plan is to have complete continents/servers for whatever you want it to be.

If so , and the tools are that powerful , we could have everything from niche Black Company setting servers to Battletech done right to our old EQ remade by folks.

(just going by what people have made with Minecraft , there's definitely some talented folks out there who are willing to put in time to do this sort of stuff)

On that note I could see SOE monetizing it that way and making a killing , renting hosted worlds/servers for people to make their own rulesets and letting who they want on it. Could be big if done right.

You aren't the only one. I'm not much of a builder but will try in this , but am in it for the exploring and resource gathering in an EQ setting and want to see the thing develop first hand also. I also want to see if I can dig to the other side of the world :p

The latest account created on the Alpha boards is #6506. Taking into account any SOE accounts, I'd say that's about right. 6400ish Trailblazers so far. That's only counting ones who have made the forum account, so probably a bit more than that.

Because I know the concept of this game is going to be awesome. I'm absolutely 100% going to spend money on it when its released. It doesn't matter to me if I spend that money now, or in 1 year when its released. It's better for me to get in on it early, because why not? I can try it out, and maybe suggest stuff that makes the game better than it otherwise would be. Also whatever preorder perks that come with it. I don't have any worries that the game won't ship, I mean it's not Pantheon right?

That being said, minecraft type games are not just about building. That would be like saying Ultima Online was only about buying and decorating your own house or castle. There is so much more to the game than that. Check out a video of Starbound. It's 2d, and sure you can build a house, but there is also tons of exploration, crafting, adventuring, and class-less item-based character advancement. Move that into the MMO space with good graphics instead of garbage looking blocks and you have something new for once that actually innovates the genre in a way that hasn't been seen since the original Everquest launched. This is why SOE and many of us are so excited about it.

Anyway, its my hope and expectation Landmark becomes something like Starbound/Terraria 3D MMO. Maybe not right away (no combat lol?), but over time yes. After all, they're using it to build EQN aren't they? Whatever one game has, wouldn't be hard to add to the other game either. The only thing stopping crossovers is "Is it norrathian yes/no"
