The housing was a nice touch in EQ2, added to the immersion, instead of being a homeless psychotic that killed everything in sight, and hung out on the streets with the other homeless dragon killing heroes.

Never got into it like some people, but had a modest setup, was an amusing side game when nothing else was going on.

Still amazes me how badly SOE fucked up with this game, it was actually a decent game for a time, years after launch admittedly. Pretty rare for a MMO to have a shittastic launch, revive years later, then completely turn around and be shit again due to retarded Dev decisions. SF was the end for me after finishing of the content, including the "hard" modes. Still miss my dirge, and his thousands of buttons condensed into a couple macros.

EQ2 is a classic tale, of creative people versus corporate interests, and not much more.

Corporate interests won obviously, enjoy craftingquest whoever still plays this hollowed out game. rip eq2

Reading the forums gives me the impression that the current content is an absolute mess. Lot of grinding, grey quests, factions to get up just to get your new epic.

That said, I'm having a lot of fun with the The Shadow Odyssey content on TLE. Raids are challenging, raid loot is varied with unique procs/effects sometimes. Stats aren't TOO stupid inflated (I think this is 2006 content now?) Works for my MMO itch anyway.

2008-2009, SF was Feb 2010 cause fire.
Also the loot is fuckin lols right now. I looked and the stats of the current TSO T4 gear is better gear than like DoV hard mode gear which is just fuckin lols. You guys have to have at least like 200% potency.

watched a few ww first ne plu ultra kills recently from first few years -- wuoshi, chel'drak, etc.

eq2 was a good game first 4 years or so. We were all jaded and spoiled at the time so we bitched. But once you accepted the mechanics changes from eq1, it was actually fairly well designed. It was not easy, even if it was kinda becoming a GUI for ACT.

it was fun from EoF to TSO, before and after were utter shit.

They were discussing it in guild, that TSO was the last expansion with the full dev team, everything after that was with like 10% of their original workforce, and apparently it shows (Everything after KoS is new to me anyway).

Apparently it gets so bad later on that they just re-skinned Loping Plains as an entire new zone, just a different palette o_O

Lol yeah, Loping plains and feerrot for one xpac were just reskinned and made into the new zones. Not to mention starting in like i think COE (the loping plains reskin) they started just taking old raid zones and making them "fabled" which is basically rereleasing the old raid mobs with slightly different strats and higher hp.

Furies were so good until like DoV then they came back as the best healer outside of shamans in CoE.

Game is tanking very quickly. Such a shame this game continues to suffer. Give me a Emu of early Naggy PvP and i'm in :) I miss the masses in KP killing each other or getting ganked in PoS. Where did time go?

Hahaha EQ2 well designed

I said *fairly* well designed. Up till they eliminated avatars, I would give it a B. I could nitpick, but the fact is, what improvements in the mmorpg genre have happened since ~2010? I might be missing something but I just don't see much of anything that has moved the genre forward. That may be me. But at its time, yes, I would argue eq2 for the first 4 years or so was not bad. As I've said before here, if there was hope of a "classic" eq2 emulator, I would be all over it. I had a lot of fun those first 4 years, and only felt minor nostalgia for the eq1 world/mechanics.

Kinda forgot I had access to this with a sub to EQ1.

Logged into my old dirge, and barely remember how to play.

Have credit for 12 years of vet rewards lol, says 13ish on character screen though, assuming a 13th year never got added?

I dunno, if I can get past the relearning curve I might dick around with this occasionally. Certainly not investing in the expansion or anything else for now.

No other way to access mercs except thru the cash shop from what I can see? Meh.

It was released on Nov 2004, so you'll have to wait until nov 2017 for that 13th year anniversary.

Just happen to pop up on my YouTube feed but one thing EQ2 did well was a solid soundtrack.

It is a shame that EQ2 went up against WoW in that same month as the timing was working against them. There was so many frustrations with EQ and SoE as a company, people were simply burned out, and EQ2's launch was disastrous at best. However, there was a time EQ2 was doing pretty well but it didn't matter as they faced an uphill battle with it's playerbase. I'm not sure anything could have helped it. Players needed WoW, they needed something different, and EQ2 wasn't it. Maybe if EQ2 came out a year or two later maybe it would have helped but i'm thinking not.
