Most of the best mods for FO/Skyrim require or are built on other mods, or require FURTHER mods to be compatible with other mods, and none of that is really reasonable inside a paid mod environment, so games with mods on the level of Bethesda games are unlikely to thrive that much in the long term with Steam paid mods. Cities: Skylines would be a much more reasonable game to do this with.

Maybe sacrifice was a little much. It was a soft launch for a product they knew would be controversial. The paid mod marketplace release would overshadow almost any game announcement. Imagine they withheld the mod marketplace and announced it today with the Fallout 4 reveal, nobody would be talking about Fallout 4. You could pull a Blizzard and try to keep it secret till the last minute or you could release it much earlier for similar but old game so the controversy wouldn't hurt sales. Let people get used to the idea and design your next product with the marketplace in mind.
The thing is, if they were thinking strategically they would've introduced paid mods in a much better way.

Doing the technique of introducing a disgusting option, then reintroducing a more appetizing one makes no sense in this instance. It's better to slide that shit in slowly. First you make it easy to integrate donate buttons into the Workshop, then you ramp it up for allowing modders to put a paywall to their mods, then you slowly see how much you can push the envelope and monetize it. Going full bore to paywalls + taking a massive cut makes no sense and you saw the result.

Wow, pretty big difference there. They probably should've just shown that high quality one in the first place, Youtube one looks like shit next to it.

Really cool that they're still making blockbuster games for ps2. That kind of support is tough to find these days.

I would laugh if this ends up being the FO4 version of the movie "A boy and his dog".

It's not cutting edge or anything, but the uncompressed trailer is actually much better. I didn't realize youtube compressed so much.

Oblivion wasn't mediocre, it was outright bad. That atrocious leveling system basically ruined the whole goddamn game unless you knew about it beforehand and abused it. I wouldn't call Skyrim mediocre, I'd call it good that becomes amazing with mods.
Agreed. When it comes to Oblivion and Skyrim, IMO you have to differentiate between the PC version and the console version. I played both of those games as well as FO3 on PC and I can not imagine playing them without mods. I learned my lesson with Oblivion and when Skyrim and FO3 came out I purposely avoided playing them until they had been released for at least a year to give the modders time to work their magic.
