Wolfenstein and Evil Within used id Tech 5 too though. While neither was an open world game, it's safe to say that the engine has vastly improved since the embarrassment called RAGE was released.

And I meant that more in the sense of "why hasn't Zenimax repurposed id into making the engine for all the other games their studios make?" They make like two games a decade now, and all that money spent on developing an engine goes to waste if only 2-3 other games use it.

Internet scuttlebut suggests the codes that come with some versions of the game EXPIRE on Oct 31, implying the game is out in early Fall.

Between Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Bloodborne, XCOM 2, & Pillars of Eternity (and have Persona 5 & Xenoblade been ruled out for the US?), this is a hell of a year for "RPGs".

Wonder if bethesda is going to take another crack at paid mods with FO4.
It's a lot of effort for a multiplatform game imo, but if they figure out how to make the mods avaiable as DLC for consoles, I could see them taking a crack at it. Depends if they want to crawl through the torrent of shit that gets unleashed at them the moment they announce it though.

I have to imagine yes. Consider that they haven't given a release date or any real info beyond a screenshot and maybe a little bit of Marketingspeak and they're already open for preorders. And while voice acting is nice I think we should all know by now what "fully voiced" means for a game like this.

I can see it now... Fallout 4 will land with yet another dog-shit interface, and wait for it... ** FallUI ** will hit the shop inside the first week - "thank you very much, that will be $10"... chaching!!

It's not a accident the paid mod bullshit made its debut just before Bethesda announced a new game. Their plan was always to sacrifice Skyrim's mod community to let enough time pass so all the hate would die down and paid mods wouldn't be a big story anymore. Then they can release Fallout4 / TE6 and make a bunch of money for other peoples work.

They just underestimated the amount of hate it would get. I could still see them modifying the mod marketplace slightly, telling us they listened to our concerns and release Fallout 4 with paid mod support anyway.

An open mod system on consoles is a holy grail for Bethesda games. I just don't see how it's possible other than a great deal of effort to vet the mods and release them as DLCs. That setup is completely different than the previous 'attempt' at dumping mods on the Workshop without curation and having people pay for them.

I think it's reasonable to believe the most likely scenario for the earlier mod-gate was a mid-level executive at Valve working with a mid-level executive at Bethesda and making a move without any real thought or input from high level management or marketing. The whole thing was a botch job and if they do want paid mods, doing it so poorly set them back some.

As for what they're going to do moving forward, I think it's reasonable to let them answer that before getting all worked up and making conspiracy theories over it.

Lines of thought like, "Their plan was always to sacrifice Skyrim's mod community" is pretty ridiculous and unwarranted.

Eh. I usually do my first run of any game without any kind of mods. It is only once I have done it once that I look for QoL/general improvement mods. Though there have been some AMAZING content mods for Skyrim and New Vegas that I have (donated) and will happily give the CREATORS of the mod money for (note: not Bethesda - I buy their expansions/DLC).

Maybe sacrifice was a little much. It was a soft launch for a product they knew would be controversial. The paid mod marketplace release would overshadow almost any game announcement. Imagine they withheld the mod marketplace and announced it today with the Fallout 4 reveal, nobody would be talking about Fallout 4. You could pull a Blizzard and try to keep it secret till the last minute or you could release it much earlier for similar but old game so the controversy wouldn't hurt sales. Let people get used to the idea and design your next product with the marketplace in mind.

ITT a lot of people talk out their asses about something they saw a smattering of. Bethesda had no influence over the creation of the paid mod store or even the decision for it to be made. They agreed to be the first adopter. The scummy thing that they actually did was set their share of the income at a preposterously high level. So the one thing they did have control over, they fucked up, sure. All this conspiracy nonsense is pointless though.

After the outrage of paid mods (largely over the fact that the mod creators got fucked by letting game companies set their own shares) everyone expected the next iteration to be released with a fresh game. FO4 could likely be that game. Hopefully Bethesda learned their lesson and will lower their cut or Valve will learn it for them and lock the shares and some reasonable level, taking it out the game companies' hands.

But graphics, paid mods, that one storyline in that last game, the dogs nutsack wasnt lined up correctly, etc

Its just easier and more entertaining for people to talk shit and be negative.

No shit, they released a teaser trailer with zero other info, so of course we will use past information to speculate on what's going to happen and as it is, Bethesda has quite a few skeletons in the closet the fans cheerfully drag to light.

All paid mods really need is curation by the developer, not some manager who only look if it makes money.

Dogmeat armor is free. But he has 97 collars, each with their own special ability. If you collect all 97, he will gain the ability to morph into Cerebus and you can finally complete his story and learn the true tale of Dogmeat. Each collar only costs 99c

Nothing? I'm sure I will be making bugfix mods for FO4 just as I did for 3/NV and no mod of mine will ever be on Steam. The Nexus claims it will never support any of that shit beyond allowing people to put up a Donate button. I think the people who run that site are mostly assholes, but I trust their word on that at least.

Bethesda is a shitty company, but they aren't stupid enough to do anything to force mods to only come from Steam Workshop. Let's not forget that the most popular mods (after fixing the garbage console UIs and the legion of bugs that Bethesda ignores) are 'adult' mods that aren't welcome on Steam at all.
