FOX was smart in holding the movie until the end of summer when there really isn't a lot of competition. That's about the only thing that'll give them a decent opening weekend.

theres gotta be a site out there that call out these paid critics?

Above all, what distinguishes the film's approach is the faith it puts in its young lead actors, especially Teller, who made an impact as an ambitious jazz student in Whiplash and is no less impressive and thoughtful here.

A light subversion of today's blockbuster aesthetics... Trank isn't using characters with built-in visual spectacle to wow us. He's inviting us to react with sympathy to what is basically the bodily horror of their new abilities.

[L]ike the 2004 low-budget sci-fi movie "Primer"... if it had suddenly turned into David Cronenberg's "The Fly" once the invention is switched on.

A decent enough overhaul to recommend heartily as a pleasant escape from the hazy, hot, humid dog days of August.

As franchise openers (or restarters) go, it's solid and moves at a rollicking pace with a talented and game cast.

All four principals -- Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell -- are well-cast, and their gee-whiz idealism is just right for the wide-eyed perspective of director Josh Trank.

It's affecting, it's thoughtful, it's often gripping and it is different. Despite its faults, if you're wearying of comic book movie homogeneity, this is worth taking a chance on.

Whilst all the character building comes at the cost of a slightly rushed climax, there's a solid basis here for future movies, if audiences can get on board with a more toned down Fantastic Four.

Fantastic Four figures out a way to approach a familiar origin story with unexpected smarts, then all-but-squanders that goodwill in its dumbed-down finale.

Is it a home run? No. But at this point, comic fans are just happy to see Fox play error-free ball with their Marvel adaptations, and "Fantastic Four" mostly qualifies.

A cracking good science fiction movie... until the third act when it is dragged kicking and screaming into being a superhero movie and falls apart.

Fantastic Four is a really good film, shorn of glib know-all theatrics, faux profundity and the spangly CG that's usually ushered in as dramatic short hand for, "we got nuthin'." It is, as the old saying goes, a proper movie.

In the face of such bad buzz, it's hard not to feel a little sorry for the finished product, which is a harmless and endearingly cartoonish throwback to more simple comic book movie times.

When I first saw the cast it seemed to me like they where trying to make some kind of hip teen movie out of Fantastic Four. I'm glad it failed.

I went to see Mission Impossible last night at the 7:30 show. The AMC cordoned off a line for this movie. It was empty. I cracked that maybe everyone was cosplaying as the Invisible Woman. Then I thought eh must be between shows. Kinda. FF was being shown in the theater next to me. There were all of 4 people standing outside the door waiting for them to finish cleaning the previous showing. I counted 12 people exiting the 5:00pm showing. Not a lot of happy, smiling people coming out. By the time MI was over and we exited AMC must have taken out the entire line system. No need.

I can't imagine why people were not lining up to see a guy whose super power is to be Stretch Armstrong. He's about as useful for fighting super villains too. The only thing that could help would be if Scooba Steve joined and made them the Fabulous Five.

I dunno, Plastic Man was able to do quite a lot of useful crime fighting things.

I dunno, Plastic Man was able to do quite a lot of useful crime fighting things.
characterization, power levels, exact nature of the powers.
Like there are quite a few Elastic men and women.

Luffy, plasticman, Elongated man(DC aka. Ralph Dibney), Mr. Fantastic, Elasti-girl(Incredibles)

now, each also have various levels of power as one.
Like Plasticman is generally considered the highest teir. Dude is a full on shapeshifter. And immortal/invulnerable. He can outright change into anything, in addition to stretching and growing. He has also displayed elastic capabilities, such as Luffy is known for, effectively giving super strength etc.
None of the others really have ever shown that level of shapeshifting. Except Ultimate Reed. He is closer to a shapeshifter and clearly was labeled has having no internal organs, also is now like 1300 years old, so likely also not aging.

Although, you can certainly look at that list and come up with some obvious examples of using these powers in combat. All these elastic people are generally immune to bullets/knives.. ultimate grapplers.. hard hitting due to leverage.

Character comes into play though. Reed's mind is more powerful then his powers. Its just not in his character to run around beating the shit out of people or killing them like wolverine or Superman. They would need to do a mind control as an excuse to make a holy shit, he kicks ass, like they did with Nightcrawler.
