That netflix video game series did a very short segment with him on his art for final fantasy- it was mostly a "lol look at his crazy awesome art and then the pixle version! nothing alike! haha oh the 80s" but he basically said - "I make the art, I try and make it unique and fun and from my imagination... from there its up to the pixel artist" - they did go on to say as the series (Final Fantasy) developed, his true art forms have been able to be developed and shown.

That episode also rustled my jimminitys because they started with Roberta Williams, a true FEMALE pioneer in gaming "Back in the racist sexist 70-80s!" - not to mention that games back then actually had some female leads / playable- Samus... Princess in SM2 and others- and to show how naturally a TALENTED female essentially made a complete company and genera - but no, they focus on the tranny that won the 1st space invader tourney and some dude that made a gay lgbtq game that was "lost to history" until, well the internet.

Anyhow, OG FF2 NES had 2 blood swords - complete overkill... I do not remember my 1st FF2 play through in terms of what I did to beat it, but I did and I liked the game - I do not think I used the blood sword? But I know I also used rippers a lot, because they did no check 20dmg per "hit" and when your doing 10-15 hits, that is decent dmg when dual wielding them - as most baddies that were mostly immune from physical dmg had low hp.

Beat FF1 and 2 now, starting 3... I never made it far in 3 or 5... my first play of 3 on a translated rom I got stuck in at some big tree thing I had to kill... and I have the 3d version... no idea where I was in that... I think the city that is huge and you have to do some quests within it... I suck at class changing games because I do not like changing up and redoing everything and grinding out stuff... but I am determined to go through the pixle remasters in order...so, here we go FF3, lets actually finish it this time.

As for the 3d remakes... I beat ff4, it was harder than SNES - but I loved the visuals "individually" and the FMVs - but the camera zoom in and "scale" of the 3d version do not match my member-berries of the SNES and its "Bigger than life scale" that it gave me - so I really did not "like" it for that reason... and I didn't do any uber bosses or anything... I am not a good min maxer, I think in FF7 I only killed one extra weapon lol.

The FMVs in FF4 3D are really impressive, especially on the HD-ish phone version (can't imagine they were this nice on the DS, but maybe).

I'm also doing them in order which, as of FF5, feels like I boxed myself in a bit cause I kinda need a break.

I did FF3 and 4 at the same time, now I'm doing 5 and 6 at the same time. Prolly doing FF4 3D at the end since it's the one that will take the longest and offer the most challenge.

Got 3 of the 4 crystals in FF5 (which means I'm like...a quarter of the way through it) and the classes are more fun to mess around with than 3 due to the skill-learning. Also like how buying spells once unlocks them for everyone. FF5 is really really good, I'm just fatigued from the others.

If we got FF5 back in the early 90's I think it would have significantly changed the complexion of things. RPGs would have blown up a little sooner, we'd all have the same nostalgia for FF5 that we have for FF6, etc. FF5 was way ahead of it's time and one of the best RPGs on the system. Pure gameplay wise it's the best of the six.

The 3D ports are extremely lazy so it's a pretty safe bet the DS cart has the exact same video files, maybe looks better on the better hardware of a modern phone.

Rude Rude Why pathetic? You dislike FF5?

Just found out there's a 3D version of FF4: The After Years that I didn't even know existed. GD it, something else I'll have to play. Pretty sure this one is phone/PC only and never got a DS release which is why I never heard about it before. $7 or so to get.

I don't remember there being this many scenarios in the Wii or PSP versions of TAY, but I'm probably wrong.

Ya same scenarios. I hated the moon mechanics. Purposely making enemies only appear during specific moon phases sucked.

The good thing about FF4 3D and TAY 3D is that I don't have to platinum them or fill out the bestiary. Just beat them and their uberbosses. No clue if TAY 3D added any uberbosses. The other two 3D games (FF3 and 4) did. TAY already had a number of what I'd consider optional uberbosses in the final dungeon anyway.

They cut content and then also added some in the 3D version of TAY. All of the challenge dungeons are gone, the final dungeon is about 1/3rd as long, and the original uberbosses are replaced by new uberbosses for whatever reason.

Huh, weird. I never liked the challenge dungeons that much (was doing the early chapters for the story) and the final dungeon was way the hell too long. My first real relationship was ending around that time and I distinctly remember my girlfriend getting mad that I was spending so much time playing that game. I persisted because I thought I was almost done, and the final area just went on and ON. Turned out it was like 9 hours long. I got through it, but she broke things off with me like two weeks later and I think all the TAY playing was part of it. All of that stuff kinda messed up the game for me, but other than that I liked TAY.

Edit: Damn, they removed all the retro bosses from TAY? The presence of bosses from across the FF series was one of the coolest things about the game, and the one thing that made the overlong final dungeon cool.

They did remove all the retro bosses, but they also cut the final dungeon from 29 floors to 13.

1AM on Thursday morning I finally have some time to really dig into FFV so I'm going late.

Big FFV Protip: DO NOT let Lone Wolf out of the Walse Jail. Don't even talk to him. If you free him from jail, he goes around the world stealing chests, and those chests DO count towards the chest total now. They didn't in the previous versions of the Pixel Remasters so I haven't seen anything indicating them as missable. In this iteration, though, they absolutely do count, so you'll end up stuck at 2/3 for a particular area if Lone Wolf raided a chest there. So just leave him in jail. He's in FF6 too so I'm guessing something similar might happen there. Just stay away from him.

Lot of people seem to be wondering if the PRs are "definitive versions" or replace old versions of these games. Seeing a lot of "which version should I play" questions.

Here's my opinion on the matter:

FF1 - PSP version. This is still the best version of FF1. Has all the optional dungeons from Dawn of Souls, plus a new one above all of them. The QOL improvements in the base game are also exceptional.

FF2 - PSP version. This is the one I'm least sure of. The PSP version of FF2 is very good and has an optional postgame storyline that is better than the main game. The PR version doesn't have that, but it does have boosts to make the level-up process painless. So I guess if you're casual go PR, if you want to get the most out of FF2 go PSP.

FF3 - PR version. It's the best version of the game and true to the NES original with big QOL upgrades. Not like there are many options with FF3, but yeah.

FF4 - PSP version. The FF4 Complete Saga game is actually worth buying a PSP for if you've never played this game. And grab FF1/maybe FF2 too. Very good version of FF4+After Years here, plus an in-between chapter that can only be played in this version. FF4 DS is a much bigger challenge and FF4 PR has better drop rates, but I give a round to the PSP here.

FF5 - PR version. FF5 doesn't have many options, like FF3. The postgame content in the Game Boy Advance version is quite good, but I'd pick the PR version over that for a first-time player due to the significantly better visuals. So PR version wins, but with a nod to the GBA version for FF5 superfans to check out later to see the optional content there.

FF6 - PR version. Not seeing anything wrong with this one. Runner up would be the GBA version here too, but I didn't find the FF6A postgame content very compelling.

FF5 - Jesus they really ramped up the annoying in this one. Overall it's been really fun and probably a step up from all previous (story or characters or something isn't as catchy as 4, can't put my finger on it), but fuck's sake some of the enemies/bosses are just 11/10 annoying. It doesn't help that whatever mechanics they use to be annoying is never clear.

Add to that some of the blue magic being ultra obnoxious to obtain, and some rare spawns that are fuckheads never spawning, and this platinum is proving to be a frustrating endeavor. Hopefully this doesn't burn me out before I get to FF6.

Took me about 30 hours to plat FF5. Still my favorite. Lvl 3 flare you gotta put reflect on the enemy then control it and use it on itself and hope it hits someone that has Learn. At least when one person learns a blue spell then everyone gets it.

Oh for fuck's sake I'm just now learning you have to master all jobs on ONE char to get that last trophy. The previous trophies were fooling me because they were taking into account global masteries.

Ya good thing I was using Bartz to learn everything so wasn't too bad. Red mage took a while since you gotta get some levels first then dual cast is 999 ABP.

Bleh, if I had known this I'd have cranked boost up to 4x on ABP earlier on. Ah well, just gotta find a good grind spot. On the last dungeon, Interdimensional Rift or whatever. Still need to kill Omega and Shinryu.

FF5 is definitely the longest out of all of them. I passed my FF3 time a bit ago and I still have the final area and a bunch of trophies to finish. No way I'll be getting level 99 in this one either 'cause I'm like level 43 and getting ready for the endgame.

I seemed to get the "all items" trophy early, cause I definitely didn't get all the items. Like I can see missing items on the map. So I think the item trophy pops a couple items early, maybe to give people a little bit of a break given how much is missable.

The thing that's annoying about FF5 is probably that the enemies use a LOT of status effects compared to earlier games. Been constantly curing something or other all game.

The blue magics are sometimes pretty annoying yeah. The worst so far was Mighty Guard. Have to find a Stingray that spawns in one specific area (the lake, just south of the Phoenix Tower in world 3). It's a rare spawn, and when you finally do get it to spawn you have to Control it and get it to cast MG on the party. Then you realize you forgot to equip anyone with Learn and have to do it again (this didn't happen to me but I could easily see it happening). There are a few things like that.

At least Mighty Guard is super-OP. Actually Blue Mages in general are super-OP. Still in the endgame I end up going with Freelancers/Mimes and using Rapid Fire / Dualcast respectively. Freelancer functions as FF5's Ninja and Mime functions as FF5's Sage, if we're comparing this to FF3 which also had two super-classes at the end. So typically I'll have 3x Freelancers using Rapid Fire + Two-Handed, and 1x Mime using Dualcast + Time Magic + White Magic. Dualcast on its own will give you a bunch of white and black spells, like a Red Mage would have, but equipping the actual spell types will let you use everything from those fields in conjunction with Dualcast. So double Meteor, double Holy. I kinda let Black Magic fall off in this one.

Maxing out all the classes in FF5 was way easier than I expected with 4x ABP. Had like 90% of them done by world 3, then the Phoenix Tower finished it off. That place gives like 2000 ABP from the five Magic Pots you can fight throw elixirs at. I recommend not wasting them (aka if you have a class that's at like 410/500 on its last level, don't waste a 400 ABP fight on it).

Left EXP on 1x all game so it wouldn't be easy and that worked out. Cranking ABP early means no need to grind Movers in the endgame, which can be tedious.

Oh for fuck's sake I'm just now learning you have to master all jobs on ONE char to get that last trophy. The previous trophies were fooling me because they were taking into account global masteries.

It might as well be "master all jobs on all characters" because they're all gonna hit max at around the same time anyway. Except Lenna, since she's out of the group for a while. In my case she had 3 classes to finish at the end when everyone else was going into their last one, so basically two classes behind.

Took me about 30 hours to plat FF5. Still my favorite. Lvl 3 flare you gotta put reflect on the enemy then control it and use it on itself and hope it hits someone that has Learn. At least when one person learns a blue spell then everyone gets it.

Might be my favorite thing about FF5, that if you buy a spell or learn it once, everyone gets it. Makes everything so much simpler than FF3.

Add to that some of the blue magic being ultra obnoxious to obtain, and some rare spawns that are fuckheads never spawning, and this platinum is proving to be a frustrating endeavor. Hopefully this doesn't burn me out before I get to FF6.

Yeah hopefully there's no burnout. Probably not as far from the end as you think, endgame enemies give a lot of ABP. The bestiary is what's taking me a lot longer. For me the burnout hit, weirdly enough, on FF3. I bounced between that and FF4 and that helped, and the burnout seemed to be gone by the time I got to FF5.

You could jump ahead to FF6 and go back and finish FF5 in a bit or something, though that carries the risk of just not wanting to be bothered to pick it back up.

I still think FF5 is probably the best gameplay-wise out of the six...though I'm this huge FF Tactics mark and FF5 is basically proto-FFT so I may be biased.

Time to wrap this up so I can get to FF6.

I am dreading FF5 now... I second the annoying bit about needing to have a specific something to progress and having no clue about it.

My last play ended when you get... I think dragoons? I don't remember... I may just actually use the boosts on it just to get it done
