Nah phone is good for me. Is it subpar? Yeah, but I'll get through it a lot sooner. On PC it competes against everything else I have on home console and probably gets dumped after a bit because it's such a patience-taxing game.

FF5 started, did the first hour and a half. In the earlier ones I just focused on getting the missable stuff and otherwise basically played normally, then cleaned up items/bestiary/treasures at the end. This worked fine, except in FF3 I had a ton of missed stuff to get and it took a while. So for FF5 I'm trying something new and making sure to get everything as I go, so when I get to the end I'll be done. This is a bit more stressful and requires referring to guides regularly so we'll see how long I keep it going. The fact that FF5 has a transforming world (several times over) means there's probably a lot that's missable so I figured I'll just go slow and cautious this time. The class system is as rad as I remember and the addition of abilities to move around puts it a big step above FF3. Some of the later bosses are real fights too. Exdeath at the end of World 2 was one of the all-time best fights I've had in an RPG, the first time I played FF5.

I feel like poison (the status effect) was never good in FF4. Bio is very good in FF3 (as a damage spell due to its general neutrality) but it kinda got nerfed for 4, and the actual poison status effect seems to barely work.

First time I remember poison actually doing any appreciable damage was...FF6 I think?

It gets better at some point cause I know the final boss of FF13 is totally obliterated by poison status. Considering how hard people say that fight is...bring poison. I think it did like half the damage over the whole right when I did it.

Just got FFIV 3D on phone this afternoon (which I'm guessing is the steam port) and yeah it's pretty lazy. Good to have a phone game though, been a while. Last time was Dragon Quest 6 back in like Q4 2019. Phone is so convenient of a platform if you don't mind the controls. Either way this version of FF4 is so jank. Turned the difficulty up to Hard cuz I want the real DS level Proto Babil. Dunno when I'll actually do this though. Probably chip at it over time. It's gonna take way more time than the PRs. Octomamm was like a GD superboss fight and harder than anything in FF4 PR, and it's like, the second boss.

Im not even talking about player spells, I mean when enemies poison me. My whole team was poisoned at one time early in the game and I was panicked worrying about getting antidotes out before people died… but it did exactly nothing. Did not have any effect at all until back on the overworld, then it did its usual 1hp per tile moved.

That is for sure not what I remember happening in FF4 (or 6). I remember hp gradually eroding in real time due to the ATB system (as opposed to end of each round in FF1).

In 4 poison can mess you up. Bio is good on enemies till you get something like flare though.

In the remaster? I’m trying to reconcile my memory of poison wrecking you with it doing nothing to me at all in the PR.

Sounds like poison damage to the party is nerfed in the PR.

Ya original 4 poison was strong. PR you just get more walking dmg or something. I just cured it anyway outside of battles

On 5 now and it is still my fave 2d FF. The job system is too fun and Gilgamesh popping up everywhere is great.

Found a good grind: Paladin Cecil by himself on Mt Ordeals. Get Paladin gear from Mysidia, equip Counter augment, turn up battle speed, reap levels since he'll just counter everything to pieces. This should also make most of the later characters jump forward to near Cecil's level (except Edge for some reason).

The augment system is really cool and adds a lot to the game... except they F'd it up by making so many of them easily missable. For example I'm locked out of Dualcast (one of the best augs in the game, let's the character cast twice...not to be confused with Twincast) because I missed Item Lore in Kaipo, can't go back there, and need it to be able to give the twins 3 augments so the elder will give me Dualcast. Super lame. I can get one on NG+ for Rydia, but Rosa will have to do without it I guess, all cause I missed one thing in Kaipo that was a new addition. Dumb dumb dumb.

Start over right now.

Not joking.

Not joking.

I could get a second Dualcast on NG++ in theory. Missing one on NG just means NG will be harder than it needs to be cause I can't drop any double Meteos.

F this version of FF4, seriously, lot of "what were they thinking". Good ideas, poor execution. Guess I'll start over, that was 4-5 hours flushed down the tubes. Got to Troia and had Cecil at almost level 40 so I had pretty damn substantial progress.

Any reason not to put the Twincasts on Cecil and Rosa? Ultima seems pretty solid. Limit Break would go on Kain under this hypothetical. Next time I'll follow a damn list so as to jump through the game's hoops in the right order and not miss crucial endgame augments because I didn't happen to check behind a building in Kaipo.

Well it wouldn't be a big deal if you weren't specifically doing this with the aim of beating Proto-Babil.

I believe your twincasts can go anywhere you want, Cecil + Rosa isn't the only unique twincast combo.

Yeah I'll start over and do this later. I guess I'll need to follow an augment guide to make sure I don't miss anything crucial because I didn't talk to the right stripper townsperson in a pond somewhere. All the augment guides seem to be for the DS version rather than the other versions, though, so not sure what the differences are. I think the main one is that you have one Limit Breaker instead of two. So basically I'd need Kain to do four fully-charged (Darkness etc) 99999 Jumps to win the fight while everyone else just stays alive (anyone else attacking is pointless if he has big counters). Could also give Limit Breaker to Rydia and her biggest attack could do up to 160k I believe but it would also give him multiple chances to counter.

...yeah, I already mulled over this a bit.

Also, it just occurred to me that the Geryon superboss on Mt Ordeals would have been a great opportunity to incorporate Culex from Mario RPG, finally. Have him be another Dark Knight who was hunting Cecil and had followed the trail to Mt Ordeals. He's also a crystal collector. Boom, Culex battle in an FF finally. Back in 1996, for my friends and I Culex was to us what Sheng Long was to other kids who played Street Fighter. We thought he was from FF4 and looked all over that game to find him. There were even magazines (EGM was one) that said Culex was a hidden boss from FF4. Nintendo Power said he was a refugee from the FF series. Even Culex himself in Mario RPG says "perhaps in another game, we were enemies". What were we supposed to think?? But nope, it was all nothing.

FF4 3D seems kind of dismal and depressing TBH, bringing down my mood after all the colorful Pixel Remasters. Maybe later. Back to FF5.

It's also a 15+ year old game that was designed for a handheld three generations ago. Having played it when it was first released, I consider it the best version of 4 and the best of all that era of FF titles.

Even if it were that simple, why would they have tossed in a reference to a game that wasn't even playable at the time?

I’m also rustled that the Scan spell appears to not work on bosses anymore. I can get the “Bestiary” item to work, but never the white magic spell. I always loved opening boss fights with that spell.

What the fucking fuck, they changed the Spoon to a Knife? These remaster fuckwads!

These games are great overall, but the George Lucas style artistic license shit is rustling my nostalgia quite a bit.

What’s the irony
The original English translations of 2(4) and 3(6) were wildly inconsistent in quality and 6 is particularly notorious for Ted Woolsey taking lots of artistic license with the translated dialogue. Square is doing the exact opposite of what you're accusing them of, they're replacing artistic license with translations faithful to the original Japanese.
