Oddly enough, I kind of enjoyed Gongaga being quite the puzzle to figure out getting around. Mostly b/c music and hanging out there was a vibe I was enjoying. One thing that felt weird about it is very much felt different from the areas before it in that virtually all the main story was up front and you could have it on your plate to move on to next area of main story really quickly before doing much if any side content/exploring. Maybe that's just how I went through it, though. First 2 zones I was so intent on exploring everything i put off main story until 100%ed them, and Corel area was pretty split up getting around a lot of different areas in between main story events.

Hard Mode is still a decent jump up in difficulty, although skill level at the combat varies quite a bit I've noticed from watching other people play. The crafting system and farming mats always felt pretty relevant on my first playthrough, mainly because you usually wanted to make the best armor pieces with as many materia slots as possible just for better loadouts/leveling more materia as you go. Although you pretty quickly learn that certain reseting/reloading and fast travel can make static material spawns easy to farm.

I also liked Gongaga's music, I know a lot didn't. It felt like a big cooldown of the vibe after the seriousness of Corel Prison.

Considering replaying on Hard Mode as I'm going to a Distant Worlds concert in a few months.

Was the game pretty much solved on release or is there any new gameplay innovations? I remember seeing the god tier Tifa players in Remake redefine the game after I wrote her off as useless lol.

There are hidden mechanics not covered in any tutorial but the majority are for Cloud + Cait as well as Zack + Sephiroth for post-game simulators. Synergy skills (R1) are meant to be your primary ATB generation for two characters at the same time, also useful things like tag team opener attacks if you hold R1 + Switch Char. Tifa has Deadly Dodge materia built in from the first game, Yuffie's Blindside is not just an attack while bound it actually breaks you free (useful for Mind Blast sim vs Mindflayer + 2 adds)

I remember watching the first videos of Tifa players from Remake and just being like "wtf". Some of that shit was unreal.

1.001 Patch is on steam, although it appears DLSS is broken for some people
  • Improved overall game stability, including several bug fixes.
  • Fixed the graphics preset to be set to 'Low' when launching for the first time on Steam Deck, even when save data is linked from the cloud. (The next time the game is launched on Steam Deck, the saved settings will be applied.)
  • When playing on a PC that supports NVIDIA DLSS, the default setting for 'Anti-Aliasing Method' is now set to 'DLSS'.
  • The DirectStorage DLL (Dynamic Link Library) has been updated to the latest version.

Got back from work trip and wrapped up Rebirth. Definitely enjoyed the latter half more ~chap 11 onward so less of the negative FFXV feelings from the first half. Better fights, better progression of story/character arcs, some decent side quests opened up post Shinra Manor. I believe I did everything you can do without hard mode which clocked in just under 100 hours with no looking up. I enjoyed Barret (Japanese voice actor) and his interactions and lines the most I think. Audio/Visuals were top tier throughout. Had 2 crashes near the end (randomly in the ocean and near the end of cetra temple) which set me back almost two hours which was kind of annoying that all the things I did in the interim had no save points <_<.

Queens Blood quest line fizzled out at the end. All the cryptic buildup and then what you are chasing doesn't even matter at all at the end. Big fail.
Protorelic was pretty good, but I don't know if it was worth all the effort with the finale being so close to the end of the game, but fights were fun.
Chocobo quest was also whatever end wise, but the racing was good. I'd play a mario kart version standalone 100%.
Pirate quest seemed pointless for what you're given but minimal effort needed.
Piano was OK and not hard to get A rank for rewards.
All the gold saucer games were borderline tedious though boxing was the worst by far. Got Tifa as my date and watched the rest when they let you post game.

The game really had some really standout parts, but also felt so disjointed at times like their teams just work on shit in a silo and then add it randomly. I also feel with how these games are hitting high fidelity graphically that I'm supposed to suspend disbelief in a world of literal healing/raising dead/unpetrifying (SETO!) that a character dying in like 99.9% of cases is remotely believable or supposed to have impact. Just cast raise bitch! I hope they clean up some of the tedious crap for the finale, but I'm sure they aren't going to listen to feedback and just keep doing whatever cause we're going to buy it anyway in 2030 when it comes out on Steam ;[.

Only things about Rebirth that I didn't like were A) Some of the dungeons were WAY the hell too long. Corel Mountain and Temple of the Ancients come to mind. I think I spent like 4 hours on the latter when I was pretty much ready to see the end and be done. B) The way they santized the two big deaths during the game from how they were in the original. Didn't even show the impalement / moment of impact on the last one, which is like...what? And with her ghost lurking around for the last hour talking to Cloud, I legit wasn't even sure if she'd actually died or somehow avoided it.

The entire game was set up to subvert your expectations on her death.

It’s stupid

It's alright. It's also a place I've got sentimental attachment to. I can also get over the Dyne alteration pretty easily.

When it comes down to it, it's really TOA and the death bet-hedging after it that annoyed me. Which is funny because FF7 Remake was also great until its last 10%. In both games, they decided to get all cute with it at the 11th hour.

I honestly didn't mind TOA, but I kind of enjoy the longer dungeon crawls. I wanted the gravity changing dynamics to be even more complex, tbh. Also on record for loving the ending. At least if they're going in the direction I think they've been going setting up Cloud's lifestream sequence in Part 3.

Granted, there's a good portion of fanbase that is convinced Aerith is going to get saved in the end that would be disappointed if it goes the way I'm expecting. Honestly I'll be disappointed if they cheese out with the "mega happy ending".

I mean Sepheroth in advent children and in this, are life stream reincarnations - so its not much of a stretch for her to be able to do the same based upon established jacked up canon.

Story changes and implications are the only thing keeping me really looking forward to the finale. The second game had too much open world checklist bullshit, but it was still better than part one. Hoping part three is just non-stop spectacle with weapon fights, northern crater, etc. Who gives a fuck if Aerith is actually dead (she is), I just wanna see how it all plays out now.
