Maybe, but I think Syrio is dead. I doubt Ser Meryn would have bothered taking him alive, and while normally GRRM doesn't hesitate to show people being killed, I think the reason he didn't show Syrio's death is because Arya, the POV character, fled the scene. Most of the Syrio=Jaqen theories revolve around the idea of Varys having needed to keep a faceless man around for a while, but that doesn't make much sense. Faceless Men don't seem like the type you hire on retainer, you contract them for a job and that's that.

Fatman said per some nerd site:
6.1.3. Is Syrio dead?

Syrio's fate is completely unknown. However, speculation has run between his having been killed, his having been imprisoned, and his having been merely a disguise of a Faceless Man who was thrown into the black cells, changed into Jaqen H'ghar, and is now at large in Westeros. A Feast for Crows appears to put an end to this latter theory, as Jaqen H'ghar was apparently already in the black cells before Syrio's confrontation with Meryn Trant.

In 2005, GRRM pointed out that Syrio seems to have been left in a hopeless situation when he was last seen, and suggested readers should "draw your own conclusions" based on this (SSM), which seems to imply that Syrio Forel was in fact killed. More recent reports (but, it should be said, unconfirmed) indicate GRRM does not understand why he gets asked the question repeatedly, pointing out that Syrio is not immortal; if accurate, this seems to more heavily imply that Syrio Forel is dead.
Just seems like people cling to Syrio because he was a fun side character and that GRRM don't give a shit.

I'm pretty sure Syrio is dead based on that Trant is still alive.

Unless Syrio is a faceless man and he's now Trant and...oh my god.

i have thought syrio was jaqen as soon as he appeared on the TV show. nothing in the books has told me different. and as everyone says, if someone is said to have died and not shown, then they are still alive.

You mean you thought Jaqen was Syrio because Syrio is introduced first, right?

blah! you know what i mean, after syrio "died" there was a prisoner out of KL on his way to the wall who was friendly towards arya and also knew she was a girl. oh and is from braavos and is also an extremely skilled fighter. kinda too obvious to miss the connection.

I always though Syrio's fate was a left ambiguous to judge readers reactions, if forgotten about he dies, if fans start asking a lot of questions then its an easy plot filler, I don't really see JRRM having the foresight to have him masquerade as another character so I always assumed he just knocked the fuck out of Ser Meryn and just fled.

At no point was Jaqen ever shown to be a skilled fighter.

Isn't Syrio a renowned fighter with a long history? Seems weird for a faceless man to be so well known. You could argue that a faceless man took Syrio's identity ala a doppleganger, but you could then make the same assumption about virtually any person include Cersei, Trant etc.

no reason to make multiple threads. It's not like a 200 page thread is any more traversible than a 100pg thread.

What do you guys think about the renaming I did? It's a little hard to visually differentiate the two threads but I don't have any good ideas.

It's better because I always used to accidentally click the spoiler thread and have to navigate out of it peering through my fingers that were covering my eyes
