I love sushi but I am disturbed watching most people eat it because they DROWN the shit in wasabi. I get that people like wasabi, but why bother paying a lot of money for a delicate ingredient like fresh tuna if you're just going to smother it in horseradish? There's no way you can taste the fish at all if it's covered in wasabi. You might as well just be eating tofu or chicken breast or something because the sauce is all you're going to taste anyway.

You mean you don't like expensive, undercooked, bland fish?
I see all the sushi knights coming to defend it, but honestly, it really doesn't do it for me. I've eaten at some super expensive and well reviewed sushi places too. I don't get the attraction. I'm not a picky eater in the least. I love trying all kinds of foods and I enjoy cooking/preparing them even more. Sushi is just not one of them. My girlfriend absolutely loves it and hates that I never want to go to a sushi place when we're deciding where/what to eat.

There is a supreme difference between saying you don't care for sushi and declaring all sushi to be expensive, undercooked, and bland.

Yeah, the difference is explaining why I don't care for it. It costs too much, it's not cooked so you miss out a lot of potential flavors, and most raw fish is just bland. How many cooked fish dishes have an accompanying sauce? Yet most raw fish is supposed to be ok with a dab of wasabi and some barely seasoned rice?

Well I mean if you go to a super expensive place and order a California Roll, yeah.

Sushi, well good sushi atleast, is all about the specialty rolls. It's all about sitting at the sushi bar and chatting with the awkard sushi chef. (They usually give you free shit if you sit up there). Next time bro, ask the sushi chef to surprise you with a random roll not on the menu.

When you say "sushi", do you mean you don't like rolls and other similar items? Or actual sashimi? Personally I love both, but I could see why some people might not like sashimi. But with rolls, there's such a massive variety that just about anyone should be able to find something that suits their taste.

Yeah, this pretty much.

I've heard it all before and I've tried a ton of it. If it's an expensive place, I almost always ask for recommendations, since I don't know shit about it. If I have to give the chef a handjob to get to the "good" sushi, I'll just go somewhere I can more easily order something I like.

Okay, as far as cost goes, yeah it's not the cheapest meal per calorie. But in terms of "missing flavors", I think you're just crazy. Tuna sashimi tastes amazing, all by itself. And most rolls have a huge amount of flavor, because there's numerous other ingredients wrapped up in there.

Seems to me that you've just had really shitty sushi.

Maybe it would taste better if I was more adept with chopsticks.

Seriously...how is a fork not superior in every way?!

I don't agree with this or what Deathwing said. Good fish should not be drowning in sauce, otherwise all you taste is sauce and then who cares what the protein is? Salt, Olive Oil, lemon and that's it for fish with some rare exceptions for different cuisines, but then again if you are having a fish curry or something, the main attraction is supposed to be the curry and the fish is just there to add some substance.

Good sushi should be all about the fish and the quality/freshness. Rolls are like sauces; tons of extra shit that dilutes the flavor of the fish and you lose the texture and the taste of the actual fish. And please don't get me wrong, I am not a sushi snob because I love a good roll with a dozen different things in it as much as the next guy, but I also know that if I am doing what you are doing (going to a good sushi restaurant and sitting at the sushi bar) I am definitely ordering omakase and leaving it up to the sushi chef and I hope to god that he isn't throwing rolls at me.

Big difference between Sushi and Sashimi, since the topic was sushi, I commented on it. What you describe is Sashimi.

Sashimi is great, love it. In seattle here we have some pretty solid fresh fish that makes great Sashimi.

I've had sushi that had no fish in it, it was a Mango Honey Vanillabean infused Rice dessert roll. Pretty balls.
