it'll probably take a few years for shit to collapse. If they drop out of the euro, you will definitely live like a king during any visit.

Really it depends. They'll have to float their own currency and usually what happens is no one wants to use it because it gets wrecked in valuation the second its released and only drops from there. So people tend to use, lets say Euros, because those are going to be pretty prevalent and easy to get since anyone with half a brain moved their accounts out of Greece and into a more stable country well before any of this came to a head.

So now the Greek government sees no one is using their own currency so they usually knee jerk and ban currency use other than their own. Which really throws things for a loop. You then end up with people doing black market deals and turning to a more barter economy until things settle down, generally many years later.

Travelers get caught in the middle of such things and if you aren't careful you can end up having money but no one wanting it. There were times in other nations where this stuff occurred and travelers couldn't spend Euros or dollars and instead had to make side trips to other bordering nations for pens, shoes and shirts to barter with.

Really it depends on how hard core the Greeks get about enforcing that new currency. Something they are kind of forced to do if they want it to have any value. Being they are a travel destination it is obviously in their best interest to keep travelers happy and make things easy but its not an easy thing to go bankrupt, float your own currency and watch your people starve as inflation spirals out of control and the rest of the world is saying "well fuck 'em they voted for this let them deal with it".

More than likely a vacation to greece will end up with you waking up in a bathtub of ice missing all your valuables and a kidney.

Tourists don't know which alley to walk down. There's the assault and battery alley, buy/sell drugs alley, general muggings alley, and of course organ theft alley.

I've been to south america and africa during unrest. It's just like chicago. Speak to locals, Know where to go, Find out where not to go and know the value of things. If you can handle doing these three things, you're fine 99.999% of the time anywhere. You could go to greece when shits all crazy with money, and if you can handle the last one, you'll still be fine. People barter and shit all the time in third world countries anyways, though never pay full price is a concept that comes hard to a lot of americans.

That said, greece will be far less dangerous than a lot of places to begin with.

LOL I live in Chicago. If you're careful and not take those parking spots with chairs/baskets/toys in it, you'll prolly only get shot at a couple times that winter.

There are areas of chicago that are perfectly safe, areas that I would avoid, or travel in only in specific ways. It's exactly the same in almost every major city. Your chances of getting murdered are actually far higher in chicago than greece.

I'm up in Andersonville/Roger's Park and it's full of browns, but I can't remember the last time I've felt "in danger" in Chicago. I went to high-school in the south side and of course University of Chicago is all the way by Farrakhan's mosque and even back in the 80s/90s it wasn't "dangerous". I've worked in Queens and Baltimore and I couldn't say the same there.

Feeling in danger is not a sign of how dangerous an area is, it's more a sign of how much browns bother you.

Most of Chicago is safe. All the violence happens in certain neighborhoods that you wouldn't fucking visit anyway.

Yeah but I imagine it's a lot easier for an American who has never been there before to take a wrong turn in Athens or Thessaloniki than it is in Chicago.

well it'd feel more dangerous. I guess you'd right if that's your criteria for how dangerous an area actually is.
