Pirates are in this year!Ugh I get so bothered when I try to make Scott Pilgrim references and no one gets them because no one saw the fucking movie.
Although Iron Man isn't as obscure as Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man pre-movie was a B Marvel hero at best and I highly doubt most non-comic fans were aware of all of those characters in the Marvel Universe. Unlike Justice League, being made up of DC?s A list characters, The Avengers is made up of B and C list Marvel heroes. Making Iron Man was a huge risk that paid off and with it they made Iron Man 2, Captain America and Thor, all leading up to The Avengers.Movie will be a risk in anycase. Even non-comic fans had heard of Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. GOTG is hipster level obscure for the public at large. The special last night even admitted it is a risk.
Now granted, if they market it right AND the movie is extremely solid AND gets good word of mouth, it may do well. But they are banking on the Marvel brand selling it, whereas the previous tentpole films had recognition of characters even if your average filmgoer had no clue what company published the comics.
Wut.The Avengers is made up of B and C list Marvel heroes.
Well, itsort ofwas for the most part. Before the movies Marvel's big hitters were Spider-Man and the X-Men. Hulk and Cap were A-list I guess, but overall the team wasn't really a huge deal for the most part.Wut.
Right whereas JL has Superman, Batman.....Yeah Hulk has always been A list. Cap is A list, but not a fan favorite till now. Thor has been pretty big.
Iron Man was never really that popular till the movie.
I still consider Hawkeye, and Black Widow B listers.
Original Avengers; Iron Man, Thor, Wasp, Ant-Man, Captain America, Hulk (who left after 2 issues). 1960's added: Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Swordsman, Hercules, Black Panther, Vision, Black Knight. Same thing applies to the characters they added from the 70's to now.Wut.
Hawkeye was a C list hero at best before The Avengers movie and now has his own comic. His comic sells fairly well these days, was #40 last month so I'd rank in between a C and B list hero, but Black Widow is definitely a D list hero in my opinion. I don't think she's ever had her own regular comic series so that puts her on the D list.Yeah Hulk has always been A list. Cap is A list, but not a fan favorite till now. Thor has been pretty big.

He's still B list at best. His comic currently isn't even breaking the top 50 monthly sellers. The public may know him now but that doesn't make him that popular still, just the movies. The main thing that's keeping him B list is The Avengers comics sell well. The movies have made Iron Man into A-list. Your average consumer now considers Iron Man to be equal in popularity to Spiderman or Superman and just a step behind Batman
^Roberty Downey Jr. as Tony Stark is A-list, Iron Man is B or C list.
I've been collecting comic books since 1976. I'm going by both comic book sales and popularity over the years as well as current sales and popularity. Right now Captain America's comic book outsells Iron Man's by about 10k.How are you guys measuring comic book character popularity? I have a hard time believing Captain America has ever been more popular than Iron Man in the modern era.
And I said before, this movie isn't going to suffer at the theatre. The trailer premiere had millions of views in less than 24 hours
Also, Iron Man is really only popular these days due to the movies. In the comics he turned into a huge ass during the Civil War story line. As I said, the only reason most people like his character today is due to the movies.Pretty shocked at numbers, growing up all of us were into iron man and war machine. Cant remember anyone buys captain america stuff
