I don't buy variant covers because of their "rarity" I buy them as a completionist. My opinion is that anything artificially designed to be collected is not worth collecting.
This is what I'm trying to say, the numbers aren't 100% due to popularity since they can be changed based on rare cover. As much as I enjoy comics, the industry is kinda shit.tldr, store sales are inflated b/c comic shops order "more" in order to fulfill the quanity needed to get the rare variant cover (which is how the store can make money) and end up selling the mass bought issues for $1 (put in the dollar bin)
It still has a lot to do with popularity. The new Ghost Rider #1 isn't going to approach anything near to the sales of Amazing Spider-Man #1. Also because Amazing Spider-Man is so popular, they can offer a 1:300 variant cover because comic book dealers will buy 300 issues to get that variant to sell for Amazing Spider-Man but no way in hell they'd do that for Ghost Rider. Variants also sell based on a comics popularity. This is what I'm trying to say, the numbers aren't 100% due to popularity since they can be changed based on rare cover. Wonder if that's Diamond or the comic studio?I know my friend who owns a shop, hates variants orders. he says it isn't worth it. also there is other bs they apply, like you must order x number of this to be able to get x number of that.
i think this is more the creative team behind the comic, they always do shit with spider-man, yea the 700 issue run, they ended it, pretty big deal, doc ok "almost" looked like he was gonna take over for good, but it has to deal with the comic at hand, ghost rider is shit. wtf have they done with ghost rider? i think maybe ghost rider was a chick at one point is the newest story? but who the fuck cares, he's so boring and barely relevant they don't even use him in any cross overs or he was so one panel i barely cared. It still has a lot to do with popularity. Amazing Spider-Man #700 and Superior Spider-Man #1 both sold about 130k comics to dealers and were the #1 comic the month of their issue for sales. I can tell you right now, I cannot find either of those issues in my shop to buy. Buying 300 issues might seem excessive but I'm fairly sure the comic shops will be able to get rid of them easily.
