I think the real question is, how hard is it to get a set of max gear?

From level 1 to decked in ascended took me about 6 months of fairly regular play. Each legendary took me about 9 months of vaguely trying to get them.

A hardcore player could do 1-ascended in a month easy. I've heard of people getting their legendaries that fast but I think they used real money.

The good news is that you can start today and in a couple of weeks have a set of gear that is perfectly fine for doing almost all of the content.

Btw has there been any talks about actually doing an expansion? Or like, new classes at least? GW1 had plenty of expansions and they all added a lot of cool stuff to the game, Factions has Assassin, Ritualist, lots of new skills and all the asian content, Nightfall had Dervish, the much harder pve content and the african/arabian content and the last expansion had all the cool story stuff, special skills and also hard content, maybe the lighter on features but interesting stuff nonetheless.

In comparison the updates they're doing seem fairly crappy, they're doing new stuff often but it's very small in size and everytime I look at the game there isn't much that makes me feel like I should reinstall the game.

For an unfair comparison, I'm a lot more interested in potentially resubbing to FFXIV because of the constant major updates than to reinstall GW2 and play for free. FFXIV is getting another primal fight, another new raiding zone, another new dungeon, couple of hard modes, chocobo raising, personnal housing(partly this next patch only) and the patch after it's getting an entire new class even though it's not even an expansion. Every FFXIV update I feel like resubbing even though so far I haven't, but everytime I hear about GW2 I don't even bother reinstalling the game, even though it's free.
They haven't talked about any expansions at all, which is really odd. I can't imagine they aren't working on something though, because the living story updates are a bit lackluster to say the least, so maybe they are just trying to direct hype on the continuous updates, if they started talking about expansion, nobody would give a shit about the tiny patches. There must be a roadmap and if another season of story updates leads to an expansion, that could be pretty cool, however no vertical character progression gives them very limited room to make stuff memorable.

You are spot on with that description. And Anet believes what they offered during the last 20ish months is actually worth as much and as attractive as the quick expansions like GW1 or EQ1 had (both felt like 6-12 months for full expansions, not sure if that's really correct), while in reality it feels like less then what WoW offers ( slow expansions but new dungeon/raid with some quests and stuff every 4-7 months).

I doubt they are working on an expansion - they went all in with regular episodic content but dropped the ball on actually *adding* things, they just flash some new shit every other week and throw it off a cliff a few weeks later. Well they did during season 1. Season 2 seems to keep the episodic stuff but with it being permanent it opens up alot of design space, like adding new skills that you have to work for, could add factions etc... alot of regular MMO content just didnt make sense for a 2-4 week window.

With Season 2 starting on July 1 will I be able to participate at lower levels or do I need to be 80?

So ANet has a new show on Twitch called Points of Interest. I laughed. No wonder the whole lesbian love story between Marjory and Kazmeer was pushed into our faces. I wonder what other non-traditional, or under represented social types we will see next. In Season 1 we had a female Charr, a Norn male with mommy issues, a disabled genius Asura kid, an aggressive, leacherous Human female lesbian, and the other Human female, who gets seduced into a lesbian relationship with the older lady (I imagine ANet went with the lesbian relationship since it would be more appealing to a wider audience). Maybe we'll see Braham and Rox falling in love?

All that aside, it does appear we are going to be seeing Maguuma Wastes, and whatever is between Wastes and Brisban Wildlands. Hope this Season is worthwhile.

TLDR how feasible is it to level up an alt in SPVP?

The most fun in PVP I've ever had was in the original GW1 where all the instanced PVP was group vs group and there was a pairing system in place to try and pair up equally matched teams.

Part of the fun in GW1 is that in addition to your own personal build you also needed to have a group build where everyone's abilities synergized with each other. The best of the best PVP guilds were the ones who were able to figure out how to create the best group build. They were able steamroll in matches as a result.

I was hoping to see something similar in GW2 but when I played at launch hardly no one wanted to do any SPVP and instead only wanted to do WvW. End result is I've only played in a few SPVP matches because I was always obligated to go help the guild in WvW.

My main is a level 70ish thief and if I start playing again first thing I would do is finish the original main story quest (called Season 1?). I think the last zone I was in is Ruins of Orr so I think I'm close to the end. After that I would focus on SPVP.

With all that out of the way, How feasible is it to level up an alt doing primarily SPVP matches?

So if I'm level 80 and I go back to the lower level zones, which reduces my level to whatever level the zone is, are the loot and cash drops based on a level 80 or whatever my reduced level is?
Cash drops and trophies are based on the zone. Loot drops are 1/5th based on zone, 4/5th based on level (i.e., I'm 80 in a level 10 area, about 20% of the equipment will be 8-10, 80% will be 76-80). Chest loot are based on level.
Crafting 1-400 is only 7 levels now.
Except for Jewelry and Cooking, who still have only 400 pts max. Tested cooking just after they unlocked the 3rd profession starting at level 72, and I dinged 80 just before 350.
With Season 2 starting on July 1 will I be able to participate at lower levels or do I need to be 80?
No idea. It is supposed to "follow" on your personal story, but you don't have to have finished to it to play the added steps.

Depends on what your regular play is, if you do pve, outdoor bosses, and dungeons daily then sure probably easier to get legendaries and ascended. I've been playing almost every day since I came back a year ago and I'm no where near to making a legendary, close to ascended I guess since I have tailoring at like 475 now. I've got 155g banked after equipping a couple characters in exotics runes and sigils, plus a couple account upgrades which I used gold to buy gems, and server transfers which I did twice, all told probably could be sitting on at least 600g. I play wvw 90% of the time with some spvp and living story stuff if there's any reward worth getting.

Leveling an alt in spvp will be slow, the only exp you will get in there is from the tomes which will give you 1 level.
Example of the reward lines for spvpCitadel of Flame Dungeon Track - Guild Wars 2 Wiki (GW2W)

Just to note Dmitry mentioned the level 20 books are easy to get, you only get those level 20 experience scrolls from the first birthday of your character or at every 5000 achievement points, the tomes of knowledge give you 1 level at a time and those are easier to come by now, spvp and they've had it purchasable in the last two living stories.

Seriously? It's not even vaguely close. The amount of content that they pumped out - great content that was fun - in the 12 months prior to this current slow down, was downright insane. WoW's stuff is top notch but there is almost none of it. In GW2 literally every 2 weeks you had something new and fun to do. Every two damn weeks and at least 4-5 of those were incredibly great new content and not just filler. Imagine WoW on speed in a race car falling into the sun at Warp 11 and you might get a sense of the content delivery difference.

Problem was very little of the content was permanent, and a lot of it was non-challenging solo instances.

The good stuff was really awesome though.

The problem is if I login now, there is nothing to show for it. It's all gone.

Two new fractal dungeons are in still and permanent.

The new WvW overflow area is still in and permanent.

The new Ascended gear system is permanent.

Right now the Airships dudes and Queens pavillion events are in.

There are two new major boss fights (Wurm and Teq) you could try to get in on.

The burpy frog mini game and the Survival mini game are still in play and both are fun.

A lot of the living world stuff is done (but may be accessible with their new system of being able to go back once that new system is in).

And just about every expansion every other game has released in the same time it took them to put that stuff out, blows that content away and it's permanent. But oh wait they will offer the old living stories for the low low price of 200gems per episode, fuck not even star trek online charges for their past episode content that was release for free in the first place.

Ascended should have never been introduced to the game, make costumes or legendaries or whatever the fuck else using the same grinding t6 mats method, but stat gear should have stopped at exotics.

That fucking wvw overflow eotm map, it took them a year to create that map from start to finish and all it's turned into is a fucking karma train which somehow gives better rewards that wvw, how about taking a moment and moving those rewards in wvw already? It helps with queues into wvw, guess how many NA servers deal with queues on a daily basis, 3 T1 servers, china release? don't give a fuck, because of them the developers didn't do shit for the game balance but throw out living stories to keep people busy. They spent a year on that piece of shit map when they could have used it to make another actual wvw map instead so we're all not all bored of borderlands and eternal battleground.

How about fixing some of the biggest problems in wvw still, haven't done shit with commander tags, won't take the time adjust ppt scoring so that's fair and not so lopsided to stacked servers, they don't give a fuck about balance populations. In fact they instigate a lot of the imbalances, let's bring back the stupid orbs buff which favors the bigger pop server, now in the ruins which is covered in dust by the way cause no one gives a shit to roam in there. Let's give a free transfer to a mid tier server right before seasons, hey guess what server won the silver leagues without 1 loss.

But shit guys we got the burpy frog mini game...

That sound like a quarter of what they were doing during GW1 expansions. They added several zones, quests, classes, skills for everyone(so like new weapons in GW2 terms) as well as new actual game mechanics(Factions had battlegrounds, meh whatever, Nightfall had heroes, can't remember if eye of the north actually added anything new besides more heroes, 8 heroes cap, metamorphosis powers which I think were new maybe and maybe dailies/hardmode dungeons or some shit).

I wasn't saying they didn't do anything. Obviously they did a lot of stuff over time and very often, it just feels like all they did though was small scale in nature and due to the way they designed it, it's mostly gone too which is a fucking stupid design if you ask me but whatever. The problem, and that's my opinion and a subjective one at that, is that I look at your list and there's basically nothing that sounds interesting. It's been what, about a year now? In GW1, Factions was released a year after and it had more content than what was permanently added to the current game. Nightfall was released 6months after that and had A LOT more content than factions, it probably had close to the content in the fucking vanilla game, classes aside.

I hope they do have an expansion they're working on, even if I have to pay 30bucks to buy it, as long as it has a lot of shit in it. 5-6zones, new class/weapons, new skills for existing ones, maybe new race(but have to redo meshes and all the classes animations and shit so that's not important and very time consuming), new stuff to do like housing or mercs or polymock(was that ever added?).
