That's going to put a lot of middle aged, balding, suburban, white guys that like to play dress up and ride Harley's with their buddies in jail.

If youre ok with increased firearms regulations you should be ok with increased voting regulations.

So I only peeked in this thread because the other political thread is awful, so maybe I missed something. But...

This was the response of Ted Nugent, rock legend and long-time defender of the Second Amendment, when asked what he would do should the government decide to go forward withany of the many firearms-confiscation plans now being developed.

I think what scares most gun owners about the gun control debate is that it feels like reasonable concessions are only the tip of the iceberg and giving a little bit of ground on the issue is just going to turn into a slippery slope towards ever increasing restrictions. Obviously that sounds crazy to a lot of people but Feinstein, who is still one of the biggest advocates for increased gun control, had this quote back when she got the original AWB passedhttp://youtu.be/blXkl9YVoHoso there is certainly some validity to that fear.

Speaking as a gun owner myself it's a really tough issue to have a fair and level headed discussion on because it so often gets bogged down in arguments over issues that have very little to do with the overall gun violence problem. This thread itself is a perfect example in microcosm, for the most part it has devolved into a back and forth over what an assault rifle is and what features aren't OK and just how many rounds do you really need in a magazine etc, when if you take an unbiased look at the statistics 'black rifles' are a very minimal part of gun violence. Frankly it's depressing that all the politicians jump on the gun control bandwagon after the media hypes up a mass shooting but don't bother trying to do anything to stem the massive amount of gang violence, predominately handgun related, that occurs everyday in the country. At a certain level it's hard to take arguments for drastic gun control seriously when I know I have a considerably higher chance of dying to some jackass on the road or second-hand smoke or a variety of other preventable causes of death that occur at much higher rates then gun violence.

As a few other people have already said at a certain point living life is about taking risks and personally I feel exercising my second amendment rights is worth the accompanying, statistically, incredibly low chance of ever being the victim of gun related violence. Finally, if the gun control debate doesn't just fade away and laws that significantly impact the ability to own firearms pass because it's safer for everyone and they aren't strictly speaking necessary we should probably have a similar discussion on topics like alcohol and smoking which are not necessary and cause large numbers of preventable deaths every year. If we are going to decide it's OK to pass laws based off gut feelings and a lack of understanding of the desire or appeal of partaking in a given activity then where is the line ever going to be drawn.

Unless hand guns are getting banned there is little point in putting restrictions on what you can own.

Liberals love to scream polltax/racism/discrimination whenever the most basic voting laws like requiring a ID to vote is ever brought up.

Man, the liberals on this issue are fucking psychopaths. Did you see what Gawker did? Their article was "assholes in New York with guns", and these were LEGAL gun owners who jumped through every hoop to legally own a pistol because of a handful of different reasons are being harassed? They are purposefully publishing the names and addresses of every legal gun owner in an attempt to shame and persecute them. It is completely fucked up. There are multiple celebrities who had their address outed now, and multiple people with dangerous stalkers who had their address outed too can now be found. The libs are just being psychotic. Anyone who owns a pistol is an asshole?

And then the wonderful hypocrisy with pieces of shit like Piers Morgan, who is so anti gun, but when someone called in and suggested that Piers shoot Alex Jones, he agrees. So that's ok? I hate reading or watching anything about any of this stuff on tv because the way it's all presented is so fucking disgustingly slanted and completely full of lies. As soon as you remove any appeal to emotion, there is simply no argument by the anti-gun nutters. They're crazier than gun nuts.

I truly feel like our country is just fucked. If it had been Alex Jones talking about shooting Piers Morgan, it would have been on every channel 24/7, Jones would have to apologize publicly, and he'd lose his job.

Yup. Seem how its racist to require that someone have an ID to vote. I still think you should have to pass a basic test too, such as be able to spell the names of both the president and VP you are voting for. Would prevent this:

Meh, bullshit. "The libs" aren't doing anything, just like "the conservatards" aren't pushing to make sure black people can't vote. It is an extreme on each side with an extreme view on the issue.

Like I said, it is the extreme. The average conservative isn't sitting at home cackling madly and wringing their hands while reading about voter suppression. The average liberal isn't doing the same about banning guns.

There are commonalities, though. Both sides suffer from media misrepresentation in order to push an agenda. On the conservative side they are pushing the idea that voter fraud is rampant and we should protect our elections or whatever, on the liberal side they are pushing the idea that "assault weapons" are machine guns basically and responsible for some large number of shootings.

Oh that's because the people pushing those laws are a bunch of racists who want to discriminate against ethnic minorities that don't vote against their interests in the way that non-rich whites do by imposing ID requirements that amount to a poll-tax under the pretext of solving a problem that doesn't really exist.
