I disagree big league. X24 as a younger, stronger version of Logan was the perfect juxtaposition for a film who's major theme is that Wolverine is aging and slowly dying. They didn't need to waste screen time building up some threat to knock down in a story that is built around Logan, X23 and Xavier. We already knew everything we needed to know about X24 without anything having to be explained: he's a younger, bigger, badder, genetically modified version of Logan with none of the humanity. It was fucking perfect.

That was the best of the X-Men movies by a long shot. I had given up on this shit franchise but I feel it redeemed itself and went out with a bang. I can be done with them now .

This movie satisfied me in ways I didn't think an X-Men related movie could. I'm just sad that this is the last we will see of Jackman's Wolvie.

The only bad part about this movie is that X-Men/Wolverine have to basically be done at this point. Between the time fuckery of Future Past and Jackedman being too damn old to keep up the Wolverine thing much longer, what else can they make?

They've finally made something to rival what Marvel is up to (and surpass plenty of it), but they do at the very tail end of all their actors window to still play their characters, with what stories left to tell?

Sadly I'm sure they'll continue to kick this horse for 3-4 more movies before the numbers drop off.

To me, they were just guys trying to do their job since they weren't openly murdering the shit out of everyone. They were omnipresent, for sure, with the constant parading of the stereotypical caravan of black vehicles. But their lack of ever really firing any weapons, seemed non-standard somehow. The only people who fired weapons that actually hit anyone were the farmer's neighborhood rednecks (or the vatos that shotgunned Logan). "Stop shooting, she regenerates!" Heh. They seemed like ex-military mercenaries for hire, rather than actual villains. The real evil were the people back at the plant. Specifically, the evil scientist that unleashed doppleganger Wolverine.

Pierce (sunglasses guy) also seemed kind of disgusted by mutants. I inferred he might have had some sort of jealousy or envy for mutants, and that he may have possibly been a mercenary who was hired to kill mutants - to answer the rest of "where did all the mutants go?"

I just read up on Pierce, and my brain totally didn't connect all of the prosthetics with that of cyborgs. Huge "no shit" blinker just went off in my brain. Cyborgs. Cyborg mutants. Predecessors to motherfucking CABLE. Speaking of, the preview before the movie was nice. Firefly. Nathan Summers (Cable). Etc. All very blatant and awesome.

Pierce is the leader of the Reavers, who are the cyborg mercenaries he leads. I think they only say the name once. They are essentially an anti-mutant group who (at least in the comics) mostly focus on killing the X-Men. He also goes on to lead the purifiers, who are just all about killing the mutants.

They also mention that the scientist the Pierce worked for was the one that "cured" the mutant problem and was responsible for wiping them out. Pierce also uses the term "mutie" during his diatribe there at the end, really cementing that he is the anti-mutant fuck boy and not just someone working for a pay check. Then the kids murder him.

This movie was fucking great and I will probably see it again this weekend.

Believe the expected plan is Deadpool 2 introduces Cable, then Deadpool 3 introduces/segues into X-Force. There's a New Mutants movie starting production and there's a push to do a Dark Phoenix X-Men movie but not sure if that's really going anywhere. There's an X-Men TV series pilot that's gaining some momentum too.

I was really hoping that Alpha Flight was waiting for them on the border and helped mop things up. There was no commentary about how things were in other parts of the world.

Makes sense they didn't go this route, as it might have taken away from the tone of the movie. This is also why the Deadpool stinger was in front of it.

Adding to that
As he explained everything for little reason in typical villain fashion, the whole lacing all the common foods with things to stop the X-gene from being passed to children, he mentioned, I think, that 'Donald' took care of most of the rest. Donald being Pierce, the lead Reaver

Won't have time to see it again, but damn good movie.

Where did all the other adults that helped the kids get to "Eden" end up? Where did the vehicles those kids obviously used to get to "Eden" end up? Why were they fucking walking to Canada? Why didn't the kids stop and fight as one when confronted instead of running and getting picked off individually? So much power, so much stupid. The little dude in charge totally had his head wrapped around the situation except for the obvious logistics of travel and resisting capture, the two most significant elements of the escape.

ok saw this film, solid 7/10.

The movie had all the mechanics down and had the ultra-violence, definitely made good use of the R Rating. but...

While the film had plenty of lull periods for intense drama building, it just felt, idk, off. This isn't DC bad of shit editing or typical X-men bad of shit acting. Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, the girl, they kill the acting np. It was just, missing something. And it's not much that separates this film from a 9/10 or higher.

I feel a single scene or two that fleshed out logan starting to care for the girl and thus his sacrifice for her actually meaning something would of hit the right amount of heart string pulling to justify his death. Like some dialogue during Prof X's death that ties it together for Logan to make him give a shit, playing off a scene/dialogue that should of been there earlier in the film with Prof X playing up the fatherhood/responsibilities and his death makes it finally click with Logan that he needs to give a shit. IDK if this was just Patrick Stewart nailing alzheimer's Prof X or what but it's clear that logan cares for him so his death has real impact, but then logan just 180s and decides to give a shit about the girl and dies to save her. Hell even Caliban's death was more dramatic and mattered more than logan's relationship to his daughter.

Definitely hits all the action beats, but I feel they wasted all the dramatic lulls to build up the prof X / Logan relationship so it hits you in the feels when he dies, but Logan's transition to giving a shit about the girl happens off screen or something.

Also they mistimed the comedic queues. Not enough tension built up via drama to need the laughs, they just through them in there at random times and it took away from what could of been effective build up.

without the effective dramatic build up, the whole movie almost comes off like the Vader scene in Rouge One. orgasm inducing fan service sure, we've waited so long for an R-Rated Wolverine flat up murdering bitches, but it could of been so much better with 1-2 scenes of actual arc and character building so his last stand mattered to him.

I think you have to be very careful not to be too heavy handed with that kind of shit, especially in a film like this with a character like Logan. you don't want to telegraph it too easily or turn it into something sitcom esque.

i'm not talking about telegraphing his death, i'm talking about building up him giving a shit about the girl. The film had plenty of ambiguity and unresolved story threads, and had at least a half dozen opportunities to play it up, it just forgot to do so. Hell you get more backstory and care more about the random rancher family that gets wiped out than you do of Logan realizing he gives a shit about the girl and decides to do something about it. He cares more and connects more with the rancher father, than the girl.

The entire conversation Prof X has with the girl via telepathy that is not revealed, prof x and logan talking about it afterward, could put a scene in there
Prof X reminding Logan about when he found him and took him in, he was nothing more than an animal too, could of added a bit of exposition there to connect to the two.
Logans suicidal ideations, could of connected that too it, him deciding this was worth dying for, could of played that up
The innocent rancher family getting wiped out at the farm house, could of easily put something in there about the cost of sacrifice, etc etc. The father's last words about his dead son, making logan think about his daughter, as actually his daughter and not random paycheck.
plenty of events in the film could of been called back during Prof Xs death scene, making Logan realize why he needs to give a shit. Any one of those things, or any other variation would of worked.

Instead, we get him giving a shit about Caliban, Prof X, the ranchers, random gas station attendant for 2 hours. Then in the last 10 minutes he does a 180, decides he doesn't want the money, does give a shit, and dies for it. It was just, off, compared to the character for the first 2 hours of the film.

Like I said, the movie is this close to being a solid 9/10. It's really only missing a handful of dialogue, maybe 1 extra scene, to connect it together and make it work as a hit straight in the feels + ultraviolence fan service last stand of wolverine film.
