No way this is any good. They are trying to make it like that gay ass "star is born" chick flick, but for comic book nerds. Those two genres aren't compatible.

Well, there is an audience for it, but they are burning through wheelbarrows of cash figuring out that the ossoibois and trannies of the world are either a very tiny group (they are) which can't support their business model, or they don't give a fuck about movies in general. This is the same mythical "modern audience" that The Acolyte was made for, and Concord. The people with $$$ don't want that shit, and have developed calluses against being called istophobes, so you can't guilt or shame them into it anymore.

Well, being a musical was already gonna be divisive in itself, obviously. And the musical aspect seems pretty absent in the trailers/marketing, so that's gonna catch people off guard.

A musical can be fine, but yeah not telling people it's a musical before going in is going to cause a backlash. I think there is a famous flop called Paint Your Wagon with an all star cast, but it's a musical and they didn't say it was so people got mad and the movie straight up bombed. Plus, they were really shitty songs, not good stuff like Le Miz.

You also have to keep in mind that the media have some vendetta against Phoenix or the Joker movie's anti establishment messaging. They tried to trash it with the first one, but it was a huge hit anyway. They could be trying to do it again.

Still, even at a $70M+ start, which would be $26M less than Joker‘s opening of $96.2M, that’s nothing to be ashamed of, and would rep arguably a record start for a live-feature musical that’s not a Disney movie (November 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody opened to $51M). At $70M, Joker 2 would be the seventh highest opening for a movie of all-time at the October domestic B.O.

It'll be surprising, or not so surprising depending what you expect out of this movie pertaining to the Joker character.

I think there will be significant backlash.
