Lucian is at or nearly at 100% pick/ban in OGN the past week/two weeks and has a higher win rate than the other 100% champs so there's that. Maybe once teams get used to playing against him. His build varies a bit but usually very heavy on the AD/ARP items and light on the IAS/Crit items, much like Varus anymore. He gets put in the ADC slot just like any other ADC, just less multiplicative damage more AD Caster damage.
So MF from early S3 then?

There is a completely rewritten PVP.net client coming, however re-engineering a mature codebase is a nightmare in the best of scenarios. It is not surprising Riot is keeping fairly quiet on that front until they have a solid launch plan in place.

Is this confirmed? Seems like they're just upgrading piece by piece.

As for Riot's business model, the only thing that bugs me are the retardedly expensive Legendary skins. I realize it's an optional cosmetic item, but I actually want to support Riot and have cool skins...I just don't want to feel like I'm getting ripped off. I can buy an entire new champion for 975 RP, but they want to charge double or triple that just for a skin.

What kind of limitations do you guys think exist in the game engine? What could they do with a "full re-write" that they aren't doing already?

I use to to be in the same boat as you. I complained about the skins and pets in poe. However, you have to realize your paying for exclusives and dedication. Is someone who doesn't main janna going to buy her legendary skin? Probably not. When you see somebody with a skin you should be thinking 'well at least he plays this champ'

I'm perfectly fine with their pricing

It's not just limitations. It's the amount of effort changes require. They are working on a new silly game mode where every player gets the same champion. It's called "All for One" I believe. As the game currently works you just can't have two Annie's on the same team because of how Tibbers works. Heimer turret limits are shared between Heimers. There are a whole host of things like that. I'm sure it's a huge pain in the dick.

Considering that Adobe Air is dying, and in my discussions with Riot employees at events they've said that they've pushed the Adobe Air platform to its absolute limits in terms of scaling, and yes you can conclude that they are redoing the entire PvP.net client from the ground up. Those same employees also said that they had a lot of cool things they want to do but are limited by Adobe Air. I don't have specifics on those things unfortunately. As a software developer myself who works in the web services space with large distributed systems, migrating from an old but functioning system to a completely new and untested one is a nightmare. So don't be surprised if it takes a long time.

I don't buy the excuse that it's just too hard to do and is going to take time. The client has sucked for years and everyone knows it. Riot is not a small company (they are over 1000 employees now) and they make more money than God, "it's hard" is not an excuse anymore. With the staff they have and the cash they bring in they could have built an entirely new game in the last two years if they were anywhere near competent.

The client isn't that bad, and considering how small Riot was when first making League of Legends, Adobe Air was a smart choice. The game exploded in popularity and now Riot has to figure out a way to re-engineer it from the ground up while not taking away any old functionality and being able to deploy it with minimal disruption to the users. It's not actually easy and it's not a problem you can just throw people at.

The client definitely has annoyances but not enough to irritate me as much as other people. As long as it does it's job in getting me into games than I'm fairly satisfied. The small annoyances would be:

  • If you're searching for a game and decide to browse the store, if someone doesn't accept the game than you'll get bounced out of the store.
  • When trying to view a friend's profile, it might display your stats instead but show your friend's name.
  • Could happen the other way too where if you just viewed a friend's profile then want to view your own, it might show your friend's stats as yours.
  • Slowness going through windows, not as snappy as it could be.
  • There are a lot of features that are missing or limited. Either Riot is intentionally not showing more info so that fansites can keep going strong or they simply can't support showing the extras. LoLKing & the others do a much better job.

Like I said, though, it's not enough to cry over. If they kept this client for the next 10 years I'd still be satisfied as long as the actual Game is still fun.

Yea, the problem is the limitations it has. They could build a webpage with more features and power at this point, it's just dumb to stick with that client if they plan on staying with LoL over the next 3 years too. Yes, migrating to a new platform is hard. Designing it is hard. But when you see what much, much smaller groups of people are achieving in game design in far less time, it really makes you wonder what those 1,000 people are doing.
