I feel like "if" there was a Mad Max movie in the 80's played on tv over and over again, it'd be Thunderdome, not saying it's good by any stretch, just that it was constantly on tv.

Thanks, I just spent the better part of an hour adding a Spotify playlist of 1980s movie themes. My weekend is complete. Completely AWESOME!

Mad Max: The Road Warrior is the one you'll want. Max Max 1 is just sort of strange. It's the story of why Max goes Mad. But it's real, REAL, standard 80's fare (with muscle cars). A biker gang killed his wife and kids and he's PISSED OFF. And Mad Max 3 tried to be 2 different movies. It's also the perfect 80's movie. But of the 4, it's probably the weakest as a movie. It's more of a spectacle and a song.

It's hard to say whether #2 or #4 is the best one. I think they're about equal.
Agree with all of this. I think the first one is worth a watch just because of how great what follows is, but it's too 80s...and Australian...for me to really consider it a great movie. The Road Warrior is an absolute classic though and it's been at or near the top of any "best post apocalyptic movies" list since it came out. Thunderdome is just silly, but if you like that genre I would still recommend watching it as it's not like there is a whole ton of high production apocalypse movies out there.

I never in a million years thought Hollywood would release a new Mad Max movie that wasn't just some shitty retread of the previous ones but like a lot of people in thread here I'll eat crow on that one. Fury Road was so great I also would consider it equal to The Road Warrior.

One thing I really loved was just how much mythology was included in the film with zero exposition. The whole thins is 99% action, but you pull a ton about the world and social structure without any of it being shoved down your throat. That part was extremely well done.

First one came out in the 70's not 80's. I talked my parents into taking me to it thinking it was going to be another Star Wars ripoff, turned out to be a rated R gang movie. I'm sure my parents loved me talking them into taking a 9 year old to see a rape and murder filled Australian biker movie.

What made this movie bad ass to me was the music.

Be careful if you listen to this stuff when you drive... You will have the growing desire to ram into things, chrome your teeth and will want to be witnessed.

Yeah, it was one of the best examples of "Show, don't tell" in recent mainstream films...which is probably why some people don't like it: "What do you mean 'I have to pay attention'? It's only an action movie" and so on.

A lesser filmaker would have spent 30 minutes explaining in detail about the warboys and how they came to be. In this film several excellent scenes made it clear without stopping the action or dumbing it down. I hope directors took notes on this film. In fact they should have an entire course dedicated to this film.

A detailed backstory wasn't necessary for this to work, only that the warboys were compelling. In fact it adds something to leave the specific details of their backstory to your imagination. You understood enough by watching them go through their routines.

I've been trying to explain this very thing to the dullards I work with, but even if they like the movie it is just because of "yay explosions!"

This is also one of my biggest pet peeves in books. I don't want to be told that soandso is a bad person (or any other character trait for that matter), I want to see them do something bad and figure it out for myself. For those that have read them, this is why The Black Company books are my favorites, practically zero description or back story on the characters, but they are more vivid to me than almost any others.

You never learn anything about those empty shitty characters in those terrible books.

I don't begrudge anyone their opinion on things like movies and books, because no one likes the same thing, and I'd still enjoy them even if I were the only person that liked them (thankfully I'm not), but I don't think we can be friends anymore

It's bad, Vvoid. Like fanfiction level bad.

We wound through mazelike streets half as old as the world, our prisoners shuffling listlessly. I gawked. My comrades are indifferent to the past, but I cannot help being awed-and occasionally intimidated-by how time-deep Beryl's history runs.
Hmmmm sounds interesting. I wonder what makes Beryl's history so amazing?

We never find our because the author just ends it at that. Thanks for the wordfap, Glen Cook.

listen, i've never even heard of those books so take that for what it's worth, but i'm totally okay with never finding out about beryl. i mean, i live in syracuse. my house has a "made in 1904" plaque on it. when i see that i think, man, this house has some history to it... but then i go in the front door and pay attention to my kids running up to hug me and my wife smiling at me. i no longer care about the history of my house. i care about the present of my house. i think there's room for stories that don't go into a chapter long history lesson on every new object the person comes into contact with.

It was written from the PoV of an annalist. Of course it will be biased and incomplete. I can understand not liking it, but it's intentionally that way.

I started watching s1 of arrow and wound up watching this and drinking instead. Also, someone is probably going to call the cops from all this glorious noise.
