Whats really weird too, at least a third of the rotten reviews are 3/5 stars for whatever column they are writing for. One guy posted probably 80% positive things for the movie with a couple of gripes and it was still rated rotten. Even commenters were confused by it.

I don't get it and it further backs up my "Rotten Tomatoes is a piece of shit site" stance.

This is a pretty positive review...

http://comicbook.com/blog/2013/06/10...vie-ever-made/
While excellent, each of those three movies (Dark Knight, Avengers, Iron Man) were missing just a little something, which is why they were stuck in a three way tie. However, what those three movies were missing, the Man Of Steel found. Man Of Steel has broken the tie, it has for me at least captured the title of the best comic book movie ever made. And this is coming from someone who has seen every comic book movie ever made, the good and the bad. I still think Nolan, Whedon, and Favreau are great, but Zack Snyder has just raised the bar. Of course, Nolan can take solace in the fact that he helped Snyder raise the bar, as a producer and writer on the film. Everything just connects perfectly in Man Of Steel.

I'm done worrying about reviews at this point. I'm just gonna go in with an open mind, not give a shit about cannon and roll with it. Hopefully I find it enjoyable. If I don't it sure as fuck won't be because "he's not traditional Superman" bullshit.

"strips away a lot of what was familiar with the story in the hopes, I assume, of releasing Superman from some of the traditional corn-fed, aw-shucks, gee-whiz Boy Scout elements that are crucial to the character."
That shit is only crucial to the goofy, pussy whipped version of Clark Kent portrayed by Christopher Reeve. He hasn't been that way in the comic for decades.

I'm really glad to see them reinventing this.

Haha it's like you're in the first stage of denial. This tag from the first rotten review:

"Mostly, the minutes stretch into great expanses of blahness, much of them filled with Transformers-grade skyscraper snapping and bloodless catastrophe."

makes it sound awesome.

Not sure why you are worried, with the amount of reviews, trailers, and other shit that you have read and watched you prolly have the whole plot down pretty well at this point.

Start of the review Tuco quoted:

"You'll believe a man can fly," ads for 1978's still-majestic Superman promised. Oy, to have such problems: These days, I'd settle for a director who could crack wise once in a while. Zack Snyder's dull-as-dirt Man of Steel (the second reboot in seven years and still not getting it done) feels like a straitjacketed affair, scared of ever wandering into humor, self-deprecation or romantic byplay. Produced by king of pain Christopher Nolan, it forgets to give the new Kal-El (muscle-bound Henry Cavill) a single recognizable emotion, save The Dark Knight's all-purpose brood-which isn't going to cut it when our S-clad hero, more than any other, has to inspire a gushing citywide love (so well-captured in the Koch-era original). The film's coyness is frustrating: Did they really need to cut Clark Kent's mild-mannered reporter from most of the scenario? That's the concept, guys. Deal with it.
I fully admit the movie could turn into nothing but big effects without enough character to support the moments, but the complaints over it not being "traditional" Superman have been pretty laughable.

I dunno, it dropped in score again, right now there are enough bad reviews that I really can't chalk it up to just people being butthurt over him not being clark kent. I'm becoming sad.

The "Top Critics" reviews are pretty damning. 54% and even the positive ones are pretty wishy washy about it.

Has anyone seen Vvoid today? Someone call and see if he's OK.

Saw an advanced screening tonight. Before I comment, I want to note that I'm not a huge fan of the Superman franchise due to the fact he's largely invulnerable/impervious to harm sans Kryptonite. Overall though, I enjoyed the movie. If I had to rank it against other recent movies, I'd say Avengers > Man of Steel > Dark Knight Rises > Star Trek Into Darkness > The Hobbit. I have not seen Iron Man 3 yet.

Henry Cavill did a great job as Superman IMO, and I'd say his acting was probably the best in the movie given Superman's limited range. Unexpectedly, Russell Crowe probably gave the weakest performance, albeit with limited screen time. There's plenty of action in the last hour of the movie and Superman goes beyond simply lifting heavy objects. I give it 4 out of 5 stars, and I expect & hope it warrants a sequel from Snyder & Nolan. I'll give a breakdown of the movie in the spoiler tags below - nothing major regarding the plot with be spoiled, just a breakdown of how the movie is set up.

The first half-hour or so is spent providing the background of the civil war & destruction of Krypton. The next half-hour or so is spent developing Superman's character and elaborating on his past via flashbacks. The last hour & a half or so is spent dealing with General Zod.

I'm still alive!

I've been keeping up with the thread, but I typically avoid reading most reviews before I see a movie that I know I'm going to go see anyway, and this thread has been almost nothing but reviews for the last couple days. Since I didn't avoid most of what was posted here, I'll say it doesn't concern me at all that people are upset it isn't another "typical" Superman movie. As you said though, if it is devoid of humor that will probably suck. But, I don't agree with a lot of RT reviews on other movies, so I'm not taking any of it to heart yet.

I'll be seeing it at the IMAX on Friday at 4PM, so whenever I get home after that I'll be sure to leave my impressions, and whether or not I'm going to make a Zack Snyder voodoo doll.

Devoid of humor? Like The Dark Knight you mean? Even when Bruce was cracking wise to Alfred, he wasn't smiling and happy about it. There were some funny touches here and there (mostly involving the Joker, naturally), but the overall tone was dark, and the tension just about didn't let up until the very end. Some people didn't like that aspect of it at the time, but I thought it was fantastic. Finally here was a director who didn't bow to the typical and insist on breaking up the tension with comic relief or side plots or whatever in the buildup to the climax of the movie.

If these are the complaints against the movie, then they're basically complaints about Nolan's style. And I'm a huge fan of that style, so I'm keeping my optimism, thank you.

Superman Returns is on TV, obviously because of Man of Steel being released. Yeah, it's lame for the most part, but I now see that's all Lex Luther. The "plane scene" just happened, and at the end I had a smile and thought "very cool scene", so while it never rank on my good movie list, if a flick has a cool moments like that, it can't entirely be a shit fest.

The movie wasn't completely devoid of humor. There were at least a half dozen moments during the movie that had the audience laughing. It's definitely much darker than Superman Returns though and had feelings of hopelessness throughout the movie which contributed to General Zod's badass'ery.
