Frenzied Wombat
Potato del Grande
I've been silently anticipating this movie above all others for quite some time, as Superman II was probably one of my favorite childhood movies, however the reviews so far have certainly taken some wind out of my sail.. Though I certainly wanted to see Superman kick ass rather than just lift shit like in Superman Returns, I didn't want this to be a mindless CGI action demo so saturated with special effects and action that it eclipses any story or character interaction. When Zac Snyder was announced as the director this was honestly my primary worry considering 300 and Sucker Punch.
Star Trek: Into Darkness to me was entirely forgettable because it just felt like Mission Impossible 3 in space-- endless non-stop action scenes occasionally broken up by a minute or two of character interaction intended more to offer comic relief than to advance the plot or develop the characters themselves. Action and CGI should feel like something "special"; once it becomes the dominating force in a movie occupying more time than plot development or dialogue you simply become desensitized to it and the movie imho becomes entirely forgettable as yet another action/CGI fest. Star Trek II was epic because 90% of the time was spent developing plot, characters, and tension, so when the action DID finally roll around it felt epic, and when Spock dies you actually FELT something. Star Trek: Into Darkness felt entirely the opposite, totally ignoring what Star Trek is supposed to be about in favor of being a generic action movie in space. I couldn't care less about the new crew because to be honest we've never even see any of them interact for more than a minute at a time.
Anyways, I digress.. Of course I reserve judgment until I see it, but if the reviews are accurate and all we get is his origin story repeated AGAIN followed by an hour and a half of endless CGI action I will be pretty disappointed.
Personally, special effects and high end graphics in general have become a crutch to be used in lieu of quality story or dialogue. It's the same reason why classic RPG's that used to have to focus on actual content are now all shitty 1st person shooters, or are so laden with fancy graphics actual content gets entirely eclipsed.
It's a definite "see" this weekend, but if the reviews hold true and it's just a big CGI fest I will be disappointed.
