Yeah, absolutely 100% agree-- being a doormat to the crazy invites more crazy. Of course in my experience fighting back also escalates the crazy-- all you can really do is flee. Logic doesn't work and only infuriates them more, and acting in an equally emotional fashion goes nowhere and you end up hating yourself later on for stooping to that level. Having a relationship with a person like this involves a need for almost limitless calm and constant reinforcement of boundaries-- basically the same way you have to interact with a child. I cannot imagine a situation where voluntarily consenting to a search is going to save you "heartache." If they are asking for your consent to a search, it means they are looking for a reason to detain you (or to further detain you), which means you currently aren't being detained, which means as soon as you ask "am I free to go?" they have to let you. In the OP's all he had to do is say "no" then the most the cop can do to him is to write his ticket and to send him on his way.
Pretty much anytime you drive from Phoenix to Vegas, expect to get pulled over and searched for drugs. It's better to just let them and get on your way rather than risk the chance of a dick cop making your life hell.
