My mom died after a nine year battle with ovarian cancer-- her illness concluded by a dose of morphine that turned her three different colors and caused her to scream out, convulse, and die. Worst thing I've ever seen/experienced in my life.
Dad died three years later from a burst arterial venous malformation in his brain. Was making himself a cup of coffee and just fell over. Four days in the ICU before they informed us that if he were to wake up, he'd be severely handicapped from brain damage. We decided to pull the plug on his ventilator the next day.
If you hate your parents, consider the bright side that you won't be emotionally destroyed when they die. If you do like your parents and are getting older, don't take anything for granted because they can literally fall over dead tomorrow. I'm only 43.

This - this is truth. Being with G's mom during her struggle and lost battle to the colon cancer (it had metastasized to her liver, lymph, all bones...it was fucking awful for her) was so very sad. We could not do very much to help her...I did most of the care as G was just not able and truth be told, it was an honor to be able to do so...I miss her still...have a little shrine to her in my living room...we really thought she would live to be at least 100. She was so worried G would die before she did...she would have lost her mind so G counted it as a blessing but would have done ANYTHING to stop her pain.
Now my own mom is fighting her lung cancer. We know it will be the death of her, but the clinical trial meds she is receiving (we know because of the side effects...) is staving it off for now. Her last scans came back clean with no metastases.
Yes, I am fortunate enough to like, love and have my parents, and my in laws (G's dad and step mom who has been...was...his step mom since he was a little guy). I do not take anyone for granted...even when my mom is being her judgmental self (G liked to call her a Shiite catholic), I adore her, I adore the second she says anything to me, about anything. I don't want to imagine my life without her or my sweet soon to be 80 year-old daddy.
Anyway - we need to change this subject - who is having sex tonight? (Not me unless you count self-indulgence)

Oh well. What the fuck is there to be done about it really. I know what to do when the time comes. They've been prepping me for it. Whenever a family member dies I've always somehow been maneuvered into the room.
I'm more concerned about my little brother, truth be told. I think i'll have to outlive him. He really won't know what the fuck to do.
