You can text good night and expect a response but you just need to find a chick who puts the same meaning into the gesture. If you want and expect a reply and she thinks its meaningless to reply it could be a problem and one of you will have to give. I've gotten yelled at by numerous girls I dated because I don't give a fuck about SMS and only reply to maybe half of their stuff. They take it as a slight but the real reason is I hate texting.

The actual reason is I read the text and sometimes intend to respond but I'd get distracted and never do it. Other times I thought they were texting me too much so I'd just intentionally ignore them because I didn't want to get a text everytime they saw a butterfly.

She seemed genuine about everything, it was mainly just personal issues between us that boiled down to pretty shitty communication. Claimed she couldn't really voice her opinion or how she felt at times; felt like I tried to force her into a relationship, and there's probably truth in that. It's been 5 years since I was in a relationship and I've been doing the whole "I don't give two shits about you" since then and she's really the first girl I've gone after like this. She admitted she's entertaining other people right now but swears up and down she was "all about" me when we were talking to each other and there was no one else. Whether or not that's true who knows, no point in really losing sleep over it at this point.
Overall it wasn't a bad idea to see her. She admitted she fucked up a lot of things, I admitted I fucked up in places too. I don't like being bitter over exs so its cool that the animosity is kind of gone.
Being bitter over a failed relationship gets you no where. For ever failed relationship you need to figure out what went wrong and if there was something differently you could have done to avoid that in the future. Odds are most bitter break ups are a two-way street and you can learn something from each one. Its like in Starcraft when you lose a game. It really sucks you lost but you need to load up that replay and figure out what exactly you did incorrectly that lead to the loss. You will learn and get better faster through objective analysis and shouldering blame.

Texting can get annoying but I prefer to think the goodnight text when distance is happening is just a small affirmation that you care. Perhaps meaningless but so are a lot of things we do in relationships. If that one little thing does it for that person you care about, put the effort in. This chick probably realized it mattered to him anyway and still didn't do it. He's better off.
I struggle with saying "I love you." It means a lot to her to hear it, but I prefer actions to show it. I don't put a lot of stock in bullshit armchair psychology, but the concept of love languages for each person seems to shine through for most self adjusted adults that aren't sociopaths.

I've told my wife "Good night baby, I love you" every night before I went to bed since we've been married. It might have started before. When I'm away, it's done with an an email or text. But, I don't expect a response because she's the one who likes that shit, not me.
People respond to different things. Some people actually like the verbal nothings, some prefer physical touch, some prefer gifts, some prefer you doing things for them, some prefer just spending time together. Most people respond well to more than one of those things but there's generally one that's more important and it's rare for someone to respond to all of them. So if your wife/GF is the type who likes to hear the sweet nothings you give her sweet nothings and count yourself lucky it's so easy to show her how much you love her.
